Everything looks promising as you drive up to the clubhouse, a nice building set well back from the road and things get better as you tee off. The course begins with a short par4, then a longer par 4 and then a truly evil pair of par 3 holes set on the side of a hill. These are by far the best holes on the course and it’s a shame they come so early in the round as the rest of the course is fairly uninspiring. Most of the holes from here on seem a little bland and lacking in character in comparison. That’s not to say they are bad holes, it’s just that after the elevation changes of the first few holes it’s a bit of a surprise to suddenly be out on a very flat course with few feature holes. I did enjoy my round here but I probably won’t be returning for the a repeat round.

Now this is how all jewellers should be. Clean, well lit and with an air of style that belies the prices. A friend recommended them when I was looking for a gift for my wife and they were every bit as good as they said. Quality service without being pushy, the sales assistant showed me a number of things before I finally chose one and seemed more than happy to help. All items are beautifully boxed and gift wrapped and although to add charms to the bracelet I bought meant sending it away to be done, it was returned very quickly. Superb experience from start to finish.

When I was booking my honeymoon I visited a number of travel agents in Guildford and Woking but it was the staff in this branch of Thomas Cook that really went the extra mile to help me out. The woman in the upstairs section talked me through loads of brochures and because we were after a two stop holiday which wasn’t a standard combination for most of the tour operators she had her work cut out. After several phone calls on my behalf she found one company that would be able to arrange what I wanted. Although I didn’t end up booking through Thomas Cook (I went direct to the tour operator and saved about 10% on the trip) I feel that their help was invaluable in me ending up with the perfect honeymoon break. Excellent service from a travel agent that really knew her stuff.

I’ve only ever needed the services of a solicitor once. That was for some conveyancing when I bought my first house and I’m very glad I chose Mylles and Co. My brother had recommended them to me and the work they did for both he and myself was faultless. Not the cheapest quote for conveyancing I was given but far from the most expensive, I thought they were worth every penny. Quick to get things moving when they needed to and I found their expertise invaluable given that I was swept up in the pressures of moving house. Located on the High Street in Sunninghill, the only downside is that it’s hard to get parked sometimes! A really excellent firm of solicitors.

Enzo’s bar is a hard place to give a rating to. In some ways it excels but in others it just doesn’t feel quite right. I went for a meal a while back and decided on a nice rare steak which had the option of being accompanied by various sauces. Although not on the menu, I asked for the 70’s classic steak Diane, the waitress said she would see what the chef could do and after a short wait I was presented with a beautifully rare steak Diane. I have yet to this day found a chef who will make that extra effort for a customer. The food was excellent from starter through to dessert and I really can’t fault it. My only gripe with Enzo’s is where we were seated. We had a table at the far end of the bar and although clean it just felt more like a table in a unloved pub than a restaurant/bar. Very friendly, great food, a nice bar but just a feeling it could be that little bit better. Enzo’s still gets 4/5 from me and is well worth visiting.

Fulk Brothers are quite simply the best butchers for miles around. They have two shops, one here in Brookwood and another in the lovely village of Pirbright and they both sell some of the best cuts of meat I’ve ever had. It’s all wonderfully fresh and tasty and with the large selection available they always have something to tempt you. Their home-made sausages are fantastic, packed with meat and spiced to perfection. If they have any, then the venison ones are well worth trying. Always friendly and willing to help and should they not have what you want then they’ll have it in for you within a day or two. Make the effort to buy your meat here instead of the supermarket, you will definitely appreciate the difference.

Game aren’t the cheapest place to buy games and consoles on the high street and as with most things these days you can pick up much better deals on-line. But game do have something going for them, the staff are knowledgeable and keen to help you find what you’re after. The stock is usually well presented on the shelves, except when they’ve been busy with is understandable, and the top games are always stocked in depth to ensure you can pick up the latest thing as soon as it comes out. It’s a nicely spaced shop with plenty of room to manoeuvre around the displays, all very well lit and very clean and tidy. You can do better for price but would be hard pushed to beat the service.

La Senza in Guildford is absolutely jam packed full of stock. It’s so full it is hard to get round the store in some places if you’ve already got a load of shopping bags with you! There’s a massive selection of lingerie ranging from boring sensible stuff to the slightly more saucy things that us guys buy for our partners at Christmas only to find we’ve inevitably got the size, colour or style wrong. If you are shopping for a present then the staff in the Guildford branch are very helpful and will offer advice, hunt through the stock room if the size you want isn’t on the rack and then package it all up beautifully ready for your loved one to unwrap. Don’t be nervous about going in if your male, they are very friendly and make the task of buying lingerie completely embarrassment free.

I have very fond memories of Bell & Dragon in Godalming as this is where I took my now wife on our first date. The interior is fantastic, a former church has been converted into a stunning place to dine. Downstairs is nice but if you can get a table upstairs (book early as they can go fast) then you can enjoy some excellent food and indulge in some people watching as well. The menu is full of enticing meals with a great selection of meat and fish dishes, and you can be sure that whatever you choose will be beautifully cooked and well presented. The wine menu is fairly comprehensive and you are bound to find something to compliment your food. My one tip, other than to make sure you try Bell & Dragon, is to arrive early and enjoy a pre dinner drink at the wonderful bar beforehand. If you haven’t tried then your missing a real treat.

One of the most enjoyable rounds of golf you’ll have in Surrey. A beautifully old fashioned clubhouse is accompanied by 18 holes of some of the most varied holes you’ll ever come across. It starts with a short drivable par 4 with a tricky green and works its way through some great heathland terrain which has hills and dips and undulations to challenge the best golfer. All the greens are immaculately presented and have a great combination of both fierce and subtle borrows, if you can 2 putt from distance on the twelfth then you will deserve your post round drink! Water, ditches and some deep bunkers make this a good test for all levels and as a whole the course is not one to be missed. A superb days golf is sure to be had.
