Nimmo's Qype profile

Taj the Grocer - Brighton

95 Western Road, Brighton BN1 2AD

30-04-2010

I think there's some confusion here between Taj (opposite Waitrose on Western Road, with a sister store at the bottom of James St), which has another entry on Qype and Taj Mahal International Foods which is on a side street further up Western Road, towards Hove. Not helped by the picture and address above being of Taj #1!

I suspect the reviews talking about rotting fruit are for the second version, which is not as impressive in terms of range and quality as Taj #1.

The Meadow Restaurant - Brighton

64 Western Road, 64 Western Road Hove BN3 2JQ 01273 721 182, Brighton BN3 2JQ

17-02-2010

A really good restaurant with excellent quality and well-cooked food, and friendly service, that deserves to do really well but I think suffers slightly from being neither the fish of Brighton, nor the fowl of Hove, but somewhere in the middle.

It's also got a very pretty dining room, a bar area for cocktails and a farm shop.

It feels like a special occasion sort of place, but the prices are actually pretty reasonable, especially the set menus.

Mama Cherris Soul Food Shack - Brighton

2 Little East Street, Brighton BN1 1HT

17-11-2008

Having seen the Gordon Ramsey programme, like the rest of the world I was rather keen to give this place a try. When I finally got a reservation (rarer than hen’s teeth), just over two years ago now, I was sorely disappointed.

We went for weekend brunch, and got handed some menus with mouth-watering dishes listed. Only to then be told that the only thing now on offer was 'soul in a bowl’, and the only things we could choose from on the menu were the drinks. Riiiight. The food came, and the vast majority of it was lukewarm/straight out of a can.

Of all my dining experiences in Brighton, I think this was the most underwhelming!

The church of St Michael and All Angels - Brighton

Victoria Road, Brighton BN1 3FU

17-11-2008

Known as 'the cathedral of the back streets’. this is an unexpected gem, with stunning stained glass windows as dmj1962 clearly knows far more about than I do! I went to a candlelit midnight mass there on christmas eve a couple of years ago, and it was quite magical, even for my atheist self.

Volks Railway - Brighton

285 Madeira Drive (next to the Aquarium), Brighton BN2 1EN

17-11-2008

Great for kids, somewhat naff for adults. Still, saves the feet if going to the Marina.

Royal Pavilion - Brighton

4-5 Pavilion Buildings, Brighton BN1 1EE

17-11-2008

Somehow, I managed to live here for two years without setting foot in the Pavilion (although I’ve hung out in the pretty gardens many an afternoon), and shamefully it took a visit from the parents to get me in there. There are some unexpectedly stunning rooms inside (although the downstairs trumps the rather dowdy and modest upstairs completely) and the story of its near-abandonment and then continued restoration is inspiring.

Snoopers Paradise - Brighton

7-8 Kensington Gardens, Brighton BN1 4AL

17-11-2008

Wonderful place (and don’t miss the free photography gallery upstairs either). Books, jewellery, clothes, furniture, antiques and general bric-a-brac, you name it you can find it at Snooper’s Paradise. As mentioned by others, best to go during the week as it’s much quieter, and just loose yourself browsing. I have a wonderful 60s standard lamp which I bought for a song, and always gets compliments. Go, go now!

The Open Market - Brighton

The Open Market, Brighton BN1 4JN

17-11-2008

Only 3 out of 5 because I didn’t think the array of stalls was that impressive when I went - having read the other reviews though, I think I need to get out of bed earlier! I did get some very good value bacon and eggs mind as Dr02e mentions, and the fishmonger looked great but I wasn’t going straight home and didn’t want to chance dodgy fish food poisoning. Am definitely going to keep an eye out for the Thai place.

Whittard Of Chelsea - Brighton

14 Churchill Square, Brighton BN1 2TB

17-11-2008

5 stars for the fact that I’m addicted to their (caffeine free) winter spice tea - heavy on the cinnamon and cardamon! Very helpful staff too.

Choccywoccydoodah - Brighton

27 Middle Street, Brighton BN1 1AL

The cakes look wonderful, but frankly the taste is not up to scratch. And the cafe is tatty, and they’d run out of basics the twice I’ve been in. Press your nose against the window of the shop, for sure but for your proper chocolate fix nip to Montezuma’s opposite instead.
