  • Chutney Tandoori - Deptford

    Chutney Tandoori

1pxt PenToPaper last updated on 29-12-2008:

Now the thing is I love good food. I also know that good doesn’t necessarily equate with expensive. Take Cinnamon off Lewisham way for example a mid-range priced curry that is almost unbeatable in style and quality. It is with this in mind that I am more so angered when somewhere so dramatically fails to provide the goods. Chutney Tandoori has unfortunately made that trespass and here I shall reign down my displeasure at what I must note as one of the most unpleasant curries I’ve had in quite some time.

Frankly under normal circumstances I’d scatter bomb this review with a battery of jokey remarks and insults but I’m so unhappy with the food from this place that I don’t think it would even be appropriate.

I must say, before continuing, I only ordered as a takeaway so I cannot comment on the experience given in the restaurant, but I am not going to be visiting any time soon and must categorically state that I am not a fan - at all.

We ordered the chicken tikka jalfrezi which was in a watery, oily sauce with very little distinctive flavour or any of the heat you woud expect from a jalfrezi. A bland affair, tasteless chicken with not even half the amount of vegetable you’d expect from a dish that was originally based on a vegetarian meal.

The second main we ordered was the chicken passanda which was almost 90% sauce and very little else. Again the sauce had nothing to distinguish it’s individual flavours. The was no flair or love in the meal whatsoever. A large yellowy expanse with very little flavour at all. Of course a passanda (similar to a Korma) should not be a chilli bomb of a meal but being totally devoid of flavour short of a very bland, slushy mix of nut and cream The mushroom rice was reasonable but a side dish does not a meal make.

Delivery took quite a while but my main concern was the poor, watery, ill judged taste of the dishes. I am very dissapointed with the quality of food produced by this establishment and can ony recommend against unless a substantial improvement, care and love of the food can be attained.

Hopefully the stabbing pain in my guts will shortly receed and reduce the ire I’m currently experiencing in light of this dire experience.

    The Gate Clock

1pxt PenToPaper last updated on 05-12-2008: (updated on 28-12-2008)

Whilst at Uni in Greenwich my final year placed me in student halls based above this pub.

It was a convenient and cheap place to drink, albeit very soulless as is to be expected from anywhere brandishing under the Whetherspoons monika.

Despite rumours that our rodent infestation was nested underneath the kitchen of this place there was a fairly unholy amount of grub that passed my lips in this establishment. More than I’d care to admit…

Like all Spoons pubs there is no music here which is particularly out of place when taking into account it’s sparsley tabled layout - much more suitable for that of a bustling bar. The place is quite large but makes very little use of its spacious environs and the inside is a real hodge podge job that in the right hands could be put to much better effect.

Cheap place to linger reading a book till you meet your friends on a cold day, but not one for an all nighter.

    Bodegon Gorbea

One of the better places to listen to music in Vitoria, depending on your tastes…

The first time I walked in Digital by Joy Division was pounding away in the background and mostly the music continued in to play in a similarly high qualitied and sometimes very eclectic vein… This was always a nice stop off point on a night out in the old town.

Whilst here you can also take the opportunity to try the local gut killing tipple Kalimotxo. Kalimotxo is a sometimes tasty othetimes horrific (often depending on your own mindset at the time) mix of cheap red wine and coke. Somehow the sugary cola balances out the vinegar in the cheap wine to create the local equivalent of special brew. Nearby on Calle Kutxiarria in the old town there are even a few bars specifically for drinking games played with the stuff….

Back to Bodegon, there’s good music, it’s open till fairly late and usually a good mixed crowd. This is definitely a bar to visit on a long night out in Vitoria.

  • Sala Azkena - Vitoria-Gasteiz

    Sala Azkena

1pxt PenToPaper last updated on 08-12-2008:

This was my local club when living in Vitoria. Conveniently placed just ten minutes between my old flat and the center of the old town.

I sometimes had mixed feelings about this place, possibly because I found it so hard to pin down the place after being in so many English clubs that seem much keener to define themselves in one particular way.

Azkena could be playing some random pop techno song one minute, Status Quo next then somehow drop Du Hast by Rammstein and in some weird way they managed to always get away with what should’ve been musical suicide.

The locals loved the place, very popular, open till the early hours and no entry or agressive door policies. In fact in all the times I went there and had late boozy nights trying to juggle myself around to some random Basque rock I never saw anything like a hint of agression.

Definitely the place to go if you’re in Vitoria for a late night out. The other clubs tend to be much sleazer all night technodrome affairs. Also good for catching the occasional international act that sometimes pass through town.

    Hiroshima National Peace Memorial

1pxt PenToPaper last updated on 08-12-2008:

This is a stunning memorial to the damage and aftermath of the atomic bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima during WWII.

The area is in three parts; The museum, the memorial park, the A-bomb dome.

On first entering the city it was clear that there was something different in it’s appearance compared to the other cities we’d seen in Japan. The roads were different and be it true or not (it would make sense if it were) my friend pointed out that the city had been rebuilt with American money thus explaining the difference. It was true that the streets definitely reminded me of a few scenes I’ve seen in American movies.

We got to the museum and began to look around. I know it shoud go without saying, but the experience was incredibly sobering, I genuinely felt horrifically moved by the whole thing. There’s a very sorrowful, but positive approach to their defeat and renewal in lieu of the atomic bombing.

There is a watch on display whose hands stopped at the time of detonation, models of the damage done by the bomb, explanations of the process and the events precipitating the explosion. We’re given a complete and rounded picture, there is no bias or even any real animosity towards those who dropped the bombs. It’s a very humbling place, even more so when you realise how Japan has helped contribute to those laterly affected by nuclear accidents and explosions such as the victims of Chernobyl.

Miraculously the dome, directly under the atomic bomb’s detonation point, is stil standing - albeit in ruins. This is quite a site and the last remaining piece of the old city of Hiroshima.

The last thing to do is have a walk around the adjoining memorial park. A torch burns here that has been pledged to burn until total global nuclear disarmament has been reached. The sad truth is that means this torch may burn for a long time yet, but the whole place is very inspiring. To build so much hope on so much disaster is a remarkable thing.

Striking and essential place to visit. Go if you are ever given the chance.
