Mugi - Ealing

Uxbridge Road, Ealing, London W5 3LD

31-01-2011

Mugi is one of the few places in London that offers authentic Serbian dishes. Worth visiting for the burek alone, which is absolutely magnificent.

The Crown - New Eltham

11 Court Yard, Eltham, London SE9 5PR

16-06-2010

The Crown is one of Eltham's less agreeable establishments. An air of menace lingers here, even on a Sunday when one would hope the locals might feel a little more relaxed after a heavy night of drinking and fighting. My token visit, on a Sunday no less, was brought to an abrupt end when a catfight broke out at the bar.

Its late license it sole reason it warrants two stars. If you're looking for a drink post-11pm, you'll either need to be a local in a decent pub or resort to this unfortunate place.

Park Tavern - Eltham

45 Passey Place, Eltham, London SE9 5DA

16-06-2010

The Park Tavern is comfortably the best pub in Eltham. Granted, the competition is, as a general rule, either generic, empty or in some instances downright dangerous, but let this not detract from what is an excellent establishment.

The impressive selection of lagers and ales are enjoyed by a friendly bunch of locals, with young, attractive bar staff to boot. What more could you want from a boozer?

the Queen's Larder - Bloomsbury

1 Queen Square, Bloomsbury, London WC1N 3AR

05-02-2010

A nice little boozer frequented by a curious mix of (remarkably wealthy) locals and tourists. A good selection of beers and a more than adequate bar menu, this pub would receive a higher rating, were it not for the slightly standoffish service.

Konrad-Tönz-Bar - Kreuzberg

Falckensteinstr. 30, 10997 Berlin

17-08-2009

A nice, intimate bar boasting a vintage interior and music to boot. A great place to hang out if you’re not keen on some of the more hectic places nearby.

London Fields - Hackney

137 Mare Street, Hackney, London E8 3RH

05-02-2009 (updated on 17-08-2009)

Open once again following refurbishment, The London Fields appears unable to decide how to market itself. In the period immediately following its reopening the pub opened during the daytime, serving excellent food. For some reason, they’ve since decided to knock that idea on the head, which is a real shame.

The London Fields pub belongs on Broadway Market: little surprise given that the landlord also runs The Cat & Mutton. Given it’s current location and cooler-than-thou approach, I struggle to see how they’ll make enough business to survive, but best of luck to them.

Howarth - Marylebone

31-35 Chiltern Street, Marylebone, London W1U 7PN

08-05-2009

Howarth’s is a London institution. If you’re looking for first-rate service from genuine woodwind enthusiasts, you need look no further.

Tucked just behind Baker Street, the store offers a comprehensive range of woodwind paraphernalia, including second hand / vintage instruments. They also do repairs and servicing too: they’re not the cheapest, nor the quickest, but I’ve found their workmanship to be unsurpassed.

Wilde 13 - Friedrichshain

Gabriel-Max-Str. 13, 10245 Berlin Berlin

17-04-2009

It’s small, friendly, and, as the previous poster said, there’s a distinct rockabilly vibe going down.

This place is bonkers for Bremen - if they’re playing a Bundesliga match and you’re in Friedrichshain, this is the place to go for top-drawer atmosphere.

Kaufbar - Friedrichshain

Gärtnerstraße 4, 10245 Berlin

16-03-2009

Having long liked the sound of the place, I finally found myself in Kaufbar yesterday evening, and it was everything I hoped it’d be. It’s cosy, very relaxed, and I found the service to be spot-on (with the caveat being that it was a Sunday evening so the place wasn’t heaving).

As other reviewers have stated, pretty much everything is for sale. OK, so you’re unlikely to purchase a dining table or sofa with your beer, but it’s a novel concept that makes for an eclectic interior.

The Stage Door - Southwark

28-30 Webber Street, Southwark, London SE1 8QA

17-12-2008

Finding a pub near Waterloo where you can get a seat is becoming a challenge. Step forward The Stage Door, an nice old boozer with a good selection of real ales and an appealing menu.

The place is easily confused with the actual “Stage Door” of the theatre on the same road which has a lit-up sign saying “Stage Door”!

Why only 3 stars? I saw bar staff refilling wine bottles from nasty looking industrial containers!
