    holland & barret

1pxt Purchaser last updated on 19-11-2008:

I love this branch of Holland & Barret. It’s located within the West One shopping centre the tube station literally exits out into at Bond Street. VERY handy to just jump off the tube, pop into this store then get back on the tube again! Also good to know for when you’re shopping along Oxford Street. They often have good deals on within the store, and it’s big enough to always be well stocked. Where as some of the other branches around the city can be a bit hit or miss with what they stock, this store seems to have most things - probably because it is so centrally located & fairly popular with the tube just being opposite it indoors.
Holland & Barret for anyone wondering - are suppliers of vitamins, minerals, supplements & healthy snacks / bags of raw seeds / dried fruit. They also cater to intolerances like gluten or wheat free etc
Often a better alternative to trying to track similar things down in your local supermarkets & usually can be found on most high streets.

  • Blue Lagoon - Reykjavík

    Blue Lagoon

1pxt Purchaser last updated on 19-11-2008:

This place is a big WOW! A definite must do when visiting Iceland. Basically it’s a massive geothermal seawater lagoon, that glows a luminous blue & it’s water is meant to have special health benefits for the skin. The water’s temperature stays roughly around 37-39 degrees celsius all year round, and it’s so impressive when you first walk out to view it!
For currently approx £14, you could stay all day here & not have to spend much more other than on a beverage or a snack if you felt inclined. They have numerous other treatments / massages available at additional costs, but it’s seriously relaxing just sitting, floating or swimming around the lagoon itself - it really is huge! There is also the white silica mud located in boxes all around the lagoon that you can freely help yourself to and rub all over your face/body if you like.
Once you arrive at the reception desk, you decide on what you would like to pay for, then are given a locker to place all you clothing / items whilst at the lagoon. You will need a bathing suit! There is the option for hiring towels / bathrobes. I visited with a bunch of girlfriends some time ago, & we spent the whole day here. Obviously we got hungry at some point & a few of us decided that we’d go all out & have lunch in their restaurant 9which isn’t cheap!). Obviously we didn’t want to go through the effort of getting dried & clothed as we planned on going back into the lagoon soon afterwards, so we just strolled in, clothed in the white robes & they didn’t bat an eyelid - happily served us like that - which was fantastic - even though we must’ve looked a sight!
I think someone did mention that the female bathrooms had open shower stalls - which was true & we were a little freaked out when we first arrived to see such full on nakedness openly displayed by some women…....however I think there were also some shower stalls that did have doors to afford privacy - so don’t fret about it too much if you are on the shy side. I definitly don’t want my bits on display to anyone & I didn’t come away embarrassed from using the showers - so am thinking there must be some that are private or a way to shield yourself from prying eyes by using the towel or bathrobe as a curtain.
An unforgettable experience all up - just think - you won’t remember how much it cost in the long term but just what an amazing time you had there!

  • The Babalou Bar - Brixton

    3 1 review

The Crypt, St Matthews Church, London SW2 1JF

    The Babalou Bar

1pxt Purchaser last updated on 19-11-2008:

Short walk away from Brixton tube station, the Babalou Bar is located in the crypt of a converted church. It’s quite cavernous, with a lot of dark brown leather lounges scattered around & lightly themed in a Moroccan styled interior. Has a 5am licence & is open till then on friday & saturday nights, when it becomes a nightclub & is open from 9pm.
Each thursday night it hosts a comedy evening called 'Comedy Bugs’ & is top value for seeing not only up & coming comedians on the circut, but also well established names - mostly trying out new routines to see how they fair - so can be patchy / hit or miss! Brendon Burns is quite often a regular, & most recently Dave Gorman made a special 'secret’ appearance. Only downside is that these nights can often over-run time wise & the victoria line (which Brixton is on) closes at 10pm currently.
Drinks are standard London prices (rarely on the cheap side!) & they do serve bar snack / sharing style food.
Well worth seeking out on a thursday night for a cheap laugh, or perhaps on the weekend club night if you’re feeling adventurous!

  • Borders Books & Music - Fitzrovia

    Borders Books & Music

1pxt Purchaser last updated on 19-11-2008:

Large bookshop sprawling over a few levels, it incorporates a good magazine section plus music / dvd level & a starbucks coffeeshop with seating. For some reason I’ve always like this branch despite a few drawbacks. There’s only 3 toilets for females & it’s often closed or long queues to use. It can be difficult trying to find what 'genre’ the book you seek would be classified under. The help desks are often either unmanned or a bit of wait to be served. But funnily enough I still like popping in here and having a browse when I’ve got a bit of time to kill when on oxford street….. it’s hard to leave empty handed!!

  • McDonald's Restaurants - City of London

    McDonald's Restaurants

1pxt Purchaser last updated on 19-11-2008:

Ok, yes it’s a McDonalds, we all know what the food is like. I just thought I’d mention that a lot of the city branches don’t sell the full menu, like Happy Meals for instance, and this branch does, which is fantastic for people with kids or adults like me who want a little meal/snack for a cheap price!!
Located on the upper level of Liverpool Street Station, it appears to be open 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week & in summer has nice alfresco seating out the front with umbrellas over the tables…..not sure that they stay during the winter months.
Mostly busy all the time, it can take a while to get served in the lunch rush, but no longer than anywhere else centrally located at the same time. Very convenient for all the travellers passing through using the british rail or stanstead trains…...not to mention the late night / early morning post drinking fast food binge….oops!
