Darjeeling - Coton-in-the-Elms
2 Coalpit Lane, Coton-in-the-Elms, Swadlincote, Derbyshire DE12 8EX

The Darjeeling is a converted pub, formerly the Queens Head, in the small village of Coton-in-the Elms. When we were there early on a Friday evening the restaurant was fairly busy and at times the service a little slow.
The menu is standard Indian restaurant fare with a variety of additional Chef's specials. The food is tasty, well cooked and attractively presented. I particularly enjoyed my starter of Tandoori fish (Mackerel I think) followed by the chef's special Jalfrezi which was well spiced and hot, though my wife was less enthusiastic about her choice of chicken in a mustard sauce. The prices are reasonable with a bill for 2 with beer, poppadoms, naan and a kulfi costing less than £50.
A recommended choice for eating out in an area with few other options.

A new restaurant and a very welcome addition to Burton's range of Indian establishments. The Kettuvallum is not your usual curry house, it specialises in authentic South Indian food from Kerala.
The menu is mainly vegetarian and seafood although a few meat dishes are also available.
I chose the fish stew served with cassava. The stew was well spiced and very tasty, balanced by the interesting but filling cassava - a full main course, no need for extra rice or side dishes. Mrs P's vegetable thali was 3 courses, starting with a delicious drumstick (a vegetable, not chicken) soup followed by a selection of 6 or so small pots of vegetables, each distinctive and flavoursome. This was in turn followed by a traditional desert.
The total price, including drinks and a poppadom starter came to less than £25 - remarkable value for food of such high quality.
pstead01 We went as a party of four last night 4th Dec. Totally agree food was fantastic and the menu made a welcome change from the usual list of Indian dishes found at other restaurants. A merger of Thai and Indian. The Manager was very welcoming and friendly taking time to explain each of the dishes. Sevice overall was excellent.

Waterfront Inn - Barton under Needwood
Barton Turns Marina, Barton under Needwood, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire DE13 8DZ

This is a review of the "Waterfront" pub in the marina.....
A rather inconsistent establishment which makes it difficult to provide a succint review and a single star rating.
The cask beer is superb, with a varied and varying range of interesting ales which are well kept at the right temperature. Its inclusion in the 2010 Good Beer Guide is certainly justified. Worth 5 stars.
Now we come to the food. Not so good. The menu looked interesting but the meals seemed expensive for the fairly small portions. The quality is poor. I enjoy slightly crunchy veg, but that served to me was undercooked and tasted and looked as if it had been left standing for a lengthy period.
The staff were friendly and service was reasonably efficient.
The pub is modern and large. Although it was comfortable and clean I thought the interior bland and lacking in any real ambiance. However the location is great overlooking the marina with boats coming and going.
So pay a visit, sit and enjoy a pint or two of cask beer and the view, then go elsewhere to eat.

This is the Halli as was - same owners, but they now serve fish and some meat dishes as well as vegetarian.
The comparatively short but interesting menu is based on Kerala specialities. The food is delicious - my meal was perhaps the best Indian I have ever eaten. A million miles from the standard curry.
It’s a simply but attractively decorated restaurant, and the staff are helpful and friendly. The prices are very reasonable.
Highly recommended.
Baan Thai Restaurant - Burton-on-Trent
95-96 High Street, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire DE14 1LJ

Attractive Thai restaurant with a menu providing a wide range of interesting dishes. Although the restaurant is deservedly busy the service is attentive and efficient.
We found the starters excellent - worthy of 5 *s. The main courses were good but perhaps not quite to the same standard. The food was cooked well but I felt the spices were a little restrained and unbalanced.
The pricing is mid-range, but justified by the quality of food and the overall ambiance of the restaurant. I would recommend that anyone looking for a good meal out in Burton try the Baan Thai.
Balti Towers - Burton-on-Trent
81 Station Street, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire DE14 1BT

Went to Balti Towers on the basis of the reports here. I was disappointed. Good points first - although the restaurant was busy the service was efficient. The complimentary pappdoms and water are welcome. The naan and the tarka dal were very good. The prices were reasonable.
But the main course was another matter. Most items on the menu seem unique to the restaurant and contain both chicken and “meat”. In my opinion, chicken with a taste of lamb(?) fat does not make a great meal.
I chose one of the Balti special options. The cauliflower in my dish had gone very soft, with the stalks collapsing into a goo. This suggested to me that the meal had been frozen and microwaved. The meat was fairly tough. The sauce was basically tasty though the overall hint of meat fat was not pleasant.
The cool rice did not add to the experience.
My conclusion - a well run restaurant whose food fails to justify the enthusiasm of the other contributers.
