Queen's Head - Troutbeck
Townhead, Troutbeck, Windermere, Cumbria LA23 1PW

Excellent country pub, catering for ramblers and more serious walkers. The food is just what one needs for either of these pursuits, with a varied menu (my favourite for over 10 years has been the shank of lamb). There are two inside eating areas: the bar is incomparably the better of the two, with a nice big fire in winter and the actual bar itself constructed from an Elizabethan four-poster bed (it’s worth getting up early on a winter Sunday to get there by mid-day to ensure a table in the bar area). A good selection of beers and some reasonably-priced wines complement the high-quality food.

Enter through a small old-fashioned cake and bread shop and head up the stairs to the cafe. Open fires in winter. Same good food as at the sister cafes in York and elsewhere in Yorkshire. See my review of Betty’s Cafe Tea Rooms in York.

Wonderful pre-war atmosphere, beloved by my parents in the 1930s. Possible an original example of fusion cuisine: Swiss plus Yorkshire. Quality of food and service is outstanding, as demonstrated by the queues that form shortly after it opens at 9:00am. Queuing reaches peaks at mid-morning, lunchtime and tea-time. Go at 9:00am on the dot on a Sunday morning and have a decadent breakfast over the Sunday papers (available at Betty’s). I always order the breakfast club sandwich, a double-decker confection of local bacon and sausage, with chutney. It’s not on the menu but the kitchen always provides…
Masons Bistro - York

Excellent food, based on recipes from all round the Mediterranean, with a well-judged wine list. Comfortable and informal ambience, attentive service. The meat dishes are usually reliably good.

Excellent modern British restaurant in a well refurbished country pub. Good selection of primarily locally-sourced food, excellent quality. Light, airy ambience with good service. Good selection of wines and beers.
The Red Fort - Soho

Excellent restaurant serving better-quality North Indian cuisine with a modern twist. Very pleasant ambience and attentive staff. The food is excellent and not pricey by the standards of the location. You can often get a table just by walking in earler in the evening. Highly recommended.
St. Magnus Court Hotel - Aberdeen

A good little hotel in the centre of Aberdeen. The rooms are adequately-sized with good en-suite facilities. There is a good bistro/bar, serving competitively-priced and tasty food. The staff are cheerful and helpful, providing a nice counterpart to the (often gloomy) Aberdeen weather. Currently (October 2008) undergoing a complete refurbishment: if the parts already completed are continued through the rest of the property, it will be an impressive addition to Aberdeen’s overpriced hotel stock. It is in the rather seedy area around the docks and railway station, but this area is being gentrified and already has some reasonable bars and restaurants. A nice touch in the rooms is a somewhat idiosyncratic review of the restaurants in the centre of Aberdeen. Note that there are no lifts to upper floors!
White Horse & Griffin - Whitby
87 CHURCH STREET, Whitby, North Yorkshire YO22 4BH

Very atmospheric coaching inn in the centre of Whitby. Food is erratic in quality: can be very good or very average. Best stick to the tried and trusted favourites such as fish pie and fish and chips.
Carmelite Hotel - Aberdeen
Stirling Street, Aberdeen, Scotland AB11 6JU

Good little city hotel in the newly-gentrifying area between Union Street, the railway station and the docks. Rooms are a little gloomy but well-appointed, and the restaurant serves a good breakfast. There is free WiFi throughout the building (ask at reception) even for those just enjoying a coffee in the foyer area.
Hotel du Port - Lausanne

Good little family-run hotel right on the lake, close to the lake ferries. Very good restaurant with a good local wine list and a very creditable version of the local dish “filets de perche”. Comfortable, excellent service.
