Jamie's Italian - Kingston upon Thames

19-23 High Street, London KT1 1LL

28-01-2009

'Jamie’s Italian’ is in a prime site close to Rose Theatre so is popular with theatre goers. The atmosphere is so great- real buzz and lively . Attentive waiters never felt hurried but allowed to enjoy the experience of food and and soak up the buzz, and the place was busy on a Saturday. Quality quality food- fresh and tasty. You can watch the chefs at work on a big screen.
They rather not take bookings but would like you to rock up and they will find a seat asap, which they did quite quickly even if it was busy.

The wild mushroom ravioli or liguine with chilli rocket and prawns is my favourite. All pasta come in two sizes : the smaller will suit smaller appetites.the dressings on salads are so full of flavour that it just buzzes in your mouth .Good range of cheeses. The food is so good that you will not want to talk but just enjoy the extarordinary flavours.. To finish off go for the Amalfi orange tart- to die for.

I only had water so can’t comment on the alcohol served
If you are a party of between 8 and 10 good idea to call beforehand to reserve a table.

The Waggon & Horses - London

1 Surbiton Hill Road, 1 Surbiton Hill Road, Surbiton, London KT6 4TW

28-01-2009

Great pub operating under new management re-launched in late June 2008, much needed re-furbishment undertaken. Built in 1812, the Waggon & Horses is a very traditional, deceptively large pub located on the main road between Kingston in one direction and Surbiton in the other. In the 19th century this old coaching house kept an extra horse to help with the climb up Surbiton Hill.

Limited range of wines and soft drinks, regular popular beers. Very nice home cooked foods served Monday - Saturday 12noon - 10pm and Sunday 12noon - 9pm.
A traditional Sunday lunch is served - choice of usually 3 meats served with all freshly prepared vegetables and all the trimmings. £9.95- very good value and well prepared meals.
Beer graden available. quiz night on a Thursday. Pub is in residential area-- children are welcome in designate areas, generally quiet and have seen some University students in there so they must like the sedate atmosphere.

Lime Leaves serves Malaysian, Singapore, Indonesian and Thai cuisine, they offer a set and an a la carte menu.
Is an independent restaurant and is owned by a Malaysian (previous owner of Thai-on-the-River in Battersea and Chelsea)
Food is excellent, restaurant is clean and tastefully decorated , and the staff are friendly and efficient that you could be in and out within 40 mins which sometime is not what you want if you want an evening outing.

Woolworths - Kingston upon Thames

10-13 Market Place, London KT1 1JH

27-01-2009

when it was there it was a great store and had been there since I came to Kingston in the seventies. But now it is gone gone gone due to the credit crunch and the store is no longer there… what a shame for such an institution. Sorry folks! Woolworths in Kingston has closed

Borders - Kingston upon Thames

8-9 Charter Quay, Market Place, London KT1 1JT

27-01-2009

Borders is a historic building with a 300 year old staircase !great range of books considering they do not have the same floor capacity as Waterstones. Well displayed. I like the travel section as it’s ticked away quietly and you won’t be too bothered by other shoppers. Children’s section is so good and they do not mind kids just staying to read them (as in the library!).

Great bargains to be had at sale times
Downstairs is the DVD and games sections.

You can take a book to in-store Starbucks café. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind with a latte and a muffin. Anything bought in store, will be gift wrapped for you at no extra charge! They have a Paperchase concession so you can buy all your stationery, greeting cards and those little extras. Friendly , helpful staff

Waitrose - Kingston upon Thames

Wood Street, London KT1 1TG

27-01-2009

A great Waitrose stocking loads of the regular stuff and also a wide range of ethnic, gluten free foods and all sorts of obscure products… and the chocolate range is awesome. The fish counter is good and well dispalyed and so is the cheese counter. Late Saturdays the most of the fresh bread is gone :-). Only Waitrose staff know exactly where anything is. AND THEY WILL PERSONALLY TAKE YOU THERE unlike other supermarkets where staff just go “it’s over there ” ! Food is always good quality and they will willingly take something back if it’s not of the required standard. excellent range of beers and ciders.

Marks and Spencer - Kingston upon Thames

26 Clarence St, London KT1 1NU

27-01-2009

Good old M&S remains as boring as ever… rails of the same of the same , the same colour , same design as last year and the year before and they call it classic! they never have smaller sizes. Per Una is ok but sometimes the colours are garish. The store is fairly large and laid over 3 floors - the men’s and homecare sections are across the road.
I think the food section is smaller than the Oxford Street branch. The magazines and newspapers are nice addition. There is a Bureau de Change on the 2nd floor next to the returns counter. I do not find staff at the branch that helpful and they come across as disinterested ( the Saturday staff are better and interested to help )

T K Maxx - Kingston upon Thames

Bishops Palace House, 2 Clarence Street, London KT1 1PB

27-01-2009

Great for bargains… if you are prepared to hunt, dig and gather ! you will need oodles of stamina and staying power to go through the rails but you will be sure to find a gem. Hot untidy dressing rooms and the shop is very hot anyway and trying to get through other shoppers can jangle on your nerves ( unless of course you are a really cool and calm person). Not all things are as cheap so be a savvy shopper and know your prices.
Insufficient mirrors to hold something up to without going to the changing rooms. Not all staff are helpful-- they are throughly fed up (and look fed-up too )with having to constantly pick stuff off the floor, return mountains of clothes back to the rails and being asked questions.
Bargain hunters this store is made for you!

Frere Jacques - Kingston upon Thames

Riverside Walk, London KT1 1QN

27-01-2009

Fairly quick service but does not warrant the hefty service charge of 12.5%. Food generall good but sometimes the meat can be fatty and pasta mushy. Great location by the river…. can be very very busy in the summer and the tables are very closely placed (call it cosy !). I love the whole French feel to the place-- the temperamnetal waiters , the checked tablecloths, the pencil that is pulled out from behind the ear to take your order and with a bit of parisian music you think you are in Paris.

Strada - Bermondsey

1 The Griffin Centre, Market Place, Surrey, London KT1 1JT

27-01-2009

excellent food.. used my 2 for 1 voucher a few times. Standard of food and service consistently high. Nice location although you will not get the full view of the river unless you are upstairs. Ideal for meeting with friends, family or for a romantic meal. They have quiet tucked away tables for privacy. Clean and uncluttered restraurant.
