    Huyton Gallery and Library

Huyton Library is by far the most comprehensive of Knowsley’s libraries, with a large selection of books and resources. It has been housed in a new, stylish building for about the last ten years, and provides a spacious, pleasant environment for browsing and reading. It also has the customary Internet access, presumably free, though I’ve never used it. I’ve always found the staff friendly and helpful. Attached to the library is a small gallery that regularly houses exhibitions by local artists. It’s worth paying a visit if you’re in the area.

    Holiday Inn

This is a classy place to spend a few nights, but it is expensive. If you plan to eat or drink there, bring plenty of extra cash. I bought a pint of beer, a pint of cola and a packet of crisps from the bar and forked out £7.50 for the privilege. Breakfast is a whopping £15. Meals vary, but a simple hamburger and chips is £13.

Breakfast was an extremely tasty buffet-style full English with assorted continental pastries, bread, cereal etc. A three-course evening meal was £20. It was mostly delicious, although the ratio of melba toast to pate was appalling (a two-by-two-inch sliver of toast for three times as much pate). My friend paid an extra £3 for the steak, and the chips were undercooked and from frozen. Pathetic for the price. I had the sea bass and mash, which was lovely.

Facilities include a pool, gym, jacuzzi and sauna.

    St James Park & Cemetery

1pxt Rattigan last updated on 31-01-2009:

I have visited Liverpool Cathedral dozens of times over the years, but only recently took a walk round the beautiful gardens and cemetery that surround it - and was pleasantly surprised.

St James Park is a moody, gothic graveyard sitting moat-like at the base of the city’s gargantuan gothic cathedral. It is entered through an eerie tunnel lined with graves. It oozes atmosphere, full of moss-dappled walls, stone monuments and headstones, and creepily formed trees and plants. My other half loved this place and took dozens of photographs on the suitably wet and dreary afternoon we spent there.

  • Eddie Rocket's - Liverpool

    Eddie Rocket's

1pxt Rattigan last updated on 28-01-2009:

I really enjoyed Eddie Rocket’s. It was on the expensive side - about five or six quid for a burger, plus a few quid for fries - but it was good quality food, with real, homemade beef patties freshly grilled and very filling. My milkshake was thick, cold and creamy. Fries were nothing special, but I got 50/50 fries and onion rings, and the latter were gorgeous.

The decor is 1950s American diner, and the staff looked authentically dressed. There are mini juke boxes at every stall, and songs are 20p each - fun, although a few of the numbers were mixed up on ours.

    Manchester Airport

1pxt Rattigan last updated on 15-01-2009:

Well, yesterday was the day I set eyes on my beloved at long last, all the way from Ontario, Canada. It was off to Terminal 1 to greet him off the plane.

On the plus side, I was surprised how handy the train was. The station is right in the airport, so it was just a few escalator rides to get to where I needed to be.

However, at T1 Arrivals, major renovations were taking place, and I found it confusing. There was no obvious signage telling you where to wait for arrivals. I found myself going down a winding corridor that led only to the gents toilet. Eventually, I found the information desk. Even a temporary sign saying “Arrivals” would have been enough. There was also no obvious live arrivals info - though eventually I found that too on a tiny screen in the information lounge.

It was very draughty, which doesn’t particularly bother me, but would bother a lot of folk.
