Brasserie Blanc - Leeds

1 Victoria Mill, Sovereign Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS1 4BJ

17-08-2008

Slightly disappointing considering the famous name. This was our first visit - a Friday night. The place was less than half full and definitely lacking in any atmosphere. However, good choice on the menu, except for vegetarians. Service was OK but the waitress who left us with the wine list failed to return to get our order. The food was good and for three of us just over £100(with 2 bottles of wine), so not too pricey, although we did share one dessert between us! The last 10 minutes of our meal were spoiled by a very unpleasant smell rather reminiscent of bad drainage on a campsite. Not sure waht that was about and we didn’t wait to find out.

Market Cross Guest House - Belford

1 Church Street, Belford, Northumberland NE70 7LS

09-08-2008

Excellent B & B in Belford, just off the A1 near Bamburgh and Holy Island, and also Sustrans cycle route 1. Hosts Jill and John really go out of the way to make your stay enjoyable. The rooms - or at least the one we sampled(the Red Room), are fantastic: big TV, Freeview, small fridge(and fresh milk!) for coffee, tea etc; comfortable chairs, information about local places to see, very comfortable bed, and excellent en suite facilities. All the little extras provided make for a really pleasant stay. The choice of food for breakfast is amazing, almost too much: fresh coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a whole range of cooked breakfasts with a big emphasis on locally caught fish.

another place - Crosby

Crosby Beach, Crosby, Liverpool, Merseyside L23

09-08-2008

Fanntastic! We visited here on a warm morning with the tide right out. Great views along the beach of Gormley’s 'men’. Interesting to see how people gravitate towards the statues - see the photo. We cycled along the cycle path which runs the whole length of the installation from the car park to the coastguard station - toilets here too. Looking forward to going back and seeing the place at high tide, or at least with the statues disappearing under the advancing sea.

The China Club - Colwyn Bay

156 Conway Road, West End, Colwyn Bay, Wales LL29 7LR

09-08-2008

Almost totally devoid of Chinese decor, or Chinese staff, at least front of house - I didn’t get into the kitchen! Despite this we had an excellent meal for 6 for just over £100 including drinks. There isn’t a huge choice of places to eat in Colwyn Bay but this place is definitely worth a visit. Excellent Peking Duck appetiser and vary tasty, and occasionally very spicy, main courses. Good service in modern (recently renovated?) surroundings.

Grand Cafe - Shanghai

Jinmao Tower, 88 Century Avenue, Shanghai

11-06-2008

The Grand Café is on the same floor as reception in the Grand Hyatt - the 58th floor of the Jinmao Tower! You need to book ahead to eat here. A good buffet, with plenty of freshly cooked food from various ethnic backgrounds; Chinese. Italian, Mediterranean, American. Food pretty good value by UK standards, but drinks are expensive. Food alone less than £20 (Easter 2008) - eat as much as you like, but even just a couple of drinks whacks it up to £30. Obviously, if you’re after a genuine Chinese eating experience, this isn’t the place for you. Most of the tables have window views, and they’re pretty spectacular.

Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co., Ltd - Shanghai

Long Yang Road 2520, Pudong, Shanghai

11-06-2008

It was almost worth the trip to China alone to have a go on this - 430kph(see photo) although we did hit 431! Very smooth acceleration up to that top speed, although the ride was a bit bumpy once we hit that top speed.

Cloud 9 - Shanghai

Jin Mao Tower 88, Pudong, im Grand Hyatt, 87. Stock, 200121 Shanghai

11-06-2008

This is on the 87th floor of the Jinmao Tower so it has to get some stars for its unique location. Drinks expensive by Shanghai standards but worth it for the views. You might have to queue for a table at busy times but spectacular views of the Shanghai skyline. We went up at night so views limited to well-lit buildings so a daytime trip might be more interesting. The low lighting at night obviously helps with the view outside, but makes it difficult to see what it’s like inside!

Brio Italian Restaurant Cafe - Leeds

St. George House Great George Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS1 3DL

29-12-2007 (updated on 05-01-2008)

Have been eating at Brio for quite a few years now. Always very good food and excellent service, even when it's busy. Plenty of specials as well as the regular menu which has a large range of starters. There are plenty of pasta dishes and a good range of meat and fish for mains. Good wines too. It's not cheap, but it is a city centre restaurant so not surprising - and they make a fuss about their regualr customers.

Victoria Family and Commercial hotel - Leeds

Great George Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS1 3BB

29-12-2007

Excellent traditional pub. Plenty of good beers and apparently, although I haven't sampled it myself, good pub grub. Best of all though is the excellent jazz every Thursday night starting around 9.15 with Brendan Duffy on saxaphone and a fairly regular line up of talented local musicians - and it's free!

Seven Arts Centre - Chapel Allerton

31a Harrogate Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS7 3PD

29-12-2007

Excellent bar and arts space in North Leeds. Good range of food and reasonably priced with an ever changing menu. Friendly staff well managed by Rob. Good, often very good, jazz on Sunday lunchtime. Comedy, films and other music make for plenty to choose from.
