Simply grim and depressing, there is nothing else one can say.

Visting Gotham was a random choice on a firday night out, which started in the bars around Central station. Going there was definately not a wise choice, i wish i had read the reviews on here before going. But you know what its like, you have a few bevvies and follow the crowd. First impressions - the doormen where very old school, intimidating and as approachable as a caged bear. Not welcoming! Once inside, i felt equally on edge the clientele was an ecclectic mix of randoms, the door policy isn't selective. A faint smell of urine lingered in the air which suddenly became more pungent as a wino sidled up to our group and pitched tent. The tatty decor complimented the overall desperate and dismal atmosphere. I couldn't even bring myself to sit on the icky furniture. Suffice to say we all left quickly. Never again.

To be honest i was a little disappointed with the food on the three occasions i have been to Scalini’s. The food just wasn’t up to the mark. Each time i have gone i have wanted my lack of faith to be proven wrong but unfortunately they just haven’t delivered good food.

I have always enjoyed having a meal at Zizzi. It has to have the best spicy calazone in town. If for nothing else go and have a taste, that is if you like it Hot! The prices are reasonable and waiting staff are excellent too.

The Cluny is great for enjoying live music, lounging about with your mates and having good food at a reasonable price. It has an excellent selection of beer, friendly staff, good service and a comfy laid back atmosphere. Its a student hang out so you won’t find any hassle there. Worth a visit definatley.

I have had the pleasure of an enjoyable night of hilarity at the Hyena. Its a tad more expensive than Madisons bar which is connected to the Hyena comedy club but they are equally welcoming and the bar staff provide good service. The Hyena is manned by the same door staff as Madisons bar which is another plus, as you are made to feel welcome by courteous doorman. You can also order decent food and after the comedy continue your night till the small hours in Madisons. Its worth a trip if your looking for a different night out.

I have had a great time at madisons every time i have went over the last two years, its student friendly, drinks are priced well, bar staff and the door staff are very polite and helpful and make the extra effort to make you feel welcome. I will definately be returning for a drink when I am back in Newcastle this September. Its worth it just for the crack with the bar staff and head doorman. You won’t spend a fortune either.
