Mornington Hotel Göteborg - Gothenburg

Kungsportsavenyn 6, 411 36 Göteborg

06-02-2010

Tricycle Theatre - Kilburn

269 Kilburn High Road, Kilburn, London NW6 7JR

28-11-2008

The Tricycle is an absolute jewel in the heart of Kilburn. Producing highly-respected plays, the work is very mixed, with lots of critically-acclaimed political theatre (“Called to Account”, “Bloody Sunday”, “The Colour of Justice” etc.) along with contemporary work and some comedy and lighter acts thrown in.

As someone who used to work there, I am slightly biased and still love hanging out in the cafe and bar.

Monday is the cheapest night for both the theatre and cinema and if you’re a student or qualify for another concession, there are some good deals on various nights.

The education work, which regular audiences sometimes don’t realise goes on, is amazing, with tons of workshops and performances for kids. To see a kid blossom and grow in confidence after attending the Limelight theatre group is a total joy to experience.

The Trike is right up there alongside the best of London’s venues and the quirky decor (carpet patterned with little tricycles and bright pink seats in the cinema) just add to its appeal. If you’ve never been - try it!

Göteborgs stadsmuseum - Gothenburg

Norra Hamngatan 12, 41114 Göteborg

27-11-2008

The Göteborg City Museum is a cultural history museum…and it’s obsessed with chairs! There’s a temporary exhibit on right now called “All these chairs” which asks how and why we collect things, and how hundereds of chairs have ended up in the museum’s collection.

Very cool design and a great little video interview with 2 curators who raise really interesting points about collections and whether a neutral point of view can be expressed when things are donated and come with certain expectations of class and gender…

One of the permanent exhibits is all about the vikings with a huge ship in the middle - Äskekärrsskeppet, the only ship from the Viking era on display in Sweden. Also very well designed and there were lots of school groups and students wandering around the place.

Like all the other museums in the city, you can leave your coats and bags in a locker for a 5k deposit. Very sensible!

There’s also a lovely little coffee shop which feels like it’s underground with big pillars and a curving ceiling. Great cakes and refills of strong coffee. We went slightly mad in the shop, buying a ton of super-cool gifts for adults and kids alike.

I was VERY impressed with this place - if you like museums (or it’s just cold and rainy outside) pop inside for a great experience. I’d also recommend getting the museum pass which includes this, the art museum, design museum and natural history museum. Very good value for money.

Hotel Max - Seattle

Stewart Street 620, WA 98101 Seattle

27-11-2008

Stayed here for 2 weeks for work. Super-fancy! Was idly looking at a picture on the hotel lobby when checking in and thought “oh, that looks like Hockney”...and it WAS a David Hockney!

Hotel Max prides itself on promoting art and has “more than 350 original paintings and photographs found throughout our Seattle, Washington hotel in the lobby, guest rooms and corridors”. Makes for a visually-interesting stay at the very least.

The Red Fin restaurant has great sushi and all kinds of beer on tap. Excellent martinis as well.

Location is very central, right next to main downtown shopping areas, close to Pike Place Market and surrounded by some great bars, restaurants and music venues.

Given the luxury of the place I was surprised that internet access was not automatically included, but it’s an extra charge per day. A small negative in an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Smaka - Gothenburg

Vasaplatsen 3, 402 23 Göteborg

27-11-2008

We read about Smaka in a tourist brochure, LOVED the name (cue lots of jokes about being “Smakaed upside the head”) and were also intrigued by an online review that described it as having a “blue mileau”.

It is quite blue indeed, but not like the inside of a Smurf house or anything… a funky bar area and lovely restaurant.

We started off with a smörgåsbord (another just brilliant word) of herring which was absolutely delicious, melt-in-your-mouth with amazing sauces, little boiled potatoes, cheese and bread.

Good wine list and a range of Swedish and other dishes. Some vegetarian options as well. We went for fish and lamb dishes, both of which were great. Very reasonably priced for the quality of the food. Highly recommended!

Mornington Hotel Göteborg - Gothenburg

Kungsportsavenyn 6, 411 36 Göteborg

First time in Göteborg, Sweden on a super-cheap RyanAir 2p deal (yes, just 2 pennies, which is really all RyanAir is worth anyway, but that’s a whole other review…).

We found the Mornington Hotel through TripAdvisor and picked it as it was mid-range in price and seemed pretty central. Totally the right choice. OK, not the most swanky of places, but it’s a perfect location right on the Avenue with a fabulous breakfast included, just next door in the Brasserie (which was also pretty good for dinner later on).

I would highly recommend taking advantage of the free sauna on the first floor, which you just book about 20 minutes before you need it (so they can crank up the heat) and then relax in after a hectic day of museums and sightseeing. Perfect for a little respite before dinner and the evening’s entertainment.

My only quibble with the Mornington would be that the ladies on the front desk did not seem that knowledgable about the local area and had a hard time coming up with recommendations for dinner - a requirement of the job one would think!

Oh, and they put little teddy bears and chocolates on your pillow and the beds are VERY comfy. There’s also the Rose and Crown pub right next door (with a convenient connecting door so you don’t have to go out in the cold). All in all, a good experience!

grand ole opry - Nashville

Opryland Drive 2802, TN 37214 Nashville

08-10-2008

An absolute must if you’re visiting Nashville. The heart of country music…even if you don’t even LIKE country music, you just can’t help but get caught up in the atmosphere. You’ll find your toe tapping and catch yourself singing along to words you didn’t even know you knew!

It’s a truly entertaining evening, with bands and singers all swapping places on stage at breakneck speed. The performance is also sent out live as a radio show, so there’s a compare guy standing in the corner behind a mike, introducing the next singers and reading out those crazy kind of commercials only to be found in the Deep South - Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Bass Pro Fishing (“Do you like to get up early on the weekends? Do you like to hunt and fish? Then Bass Pro is for you!”). An unintentionally hilarious addition to the music.

And the music is really great. All manner of family groups, up-and-coming singers, and old-timers who are as much comedians and all-round entertainers as they are musicans - there was even a hot boy band when I was there! Well worth it, and make sure you get a cowboy hat or suitably cheesy souvenir from the (extensive) gift shop!
