Globe and Rainbow - Kilndown

Cranbrook, Kent TN17 2SG

01-05-2009 (updated on 31-08-2010)

This is an very good pub with a lovely landlady and a great atmosphere. But best of all is the food, which just seems to get better and better.

The baked white chocolote cheesecake is especially delicious, and the last meal I had there was just excellent - none of us could find a single thing to quibble over!

A great pub that I look forward to visiting every time I go to Kilndown.

thesussexidler I've heard good things about this place too..............

mikeyrobson Having eaten at the Globe and Rainbow many times I can honestly say its top notch! Ignore the comment below - know for a fact that the Globe uses fresh fish and meat after watching the chef prep them on afternoon! Great place, great food and great atmosphere - what more do you need? :D

Olive - Penge

179 High Street, Penge, London SE20 7EX

17-01-2010

Recently started opening for breakfast and lunch, which makes it one of the few cafes in Penge that isn't a greasy spoon. Service is friendly, prices are low and the food I ordered was great. I only had a bagel, but it came with fresh salads and looked all pretty on the plate.

It's a shame there isn't a sofa area or a more comfy seating set up. The decor is a strange mix of cosy dark paint and Turkish-style lamps coupled with generic, souless tables and chairs. Because of this, I'd probably hesitate to go here for an evening meal, but during the day it's a great lunchtime option.

Oh! And most importantly: Free WiFi!

Shinykatie This place is no longer open... But the new place -- Antep Mangall -- serves really delicious Mediterranean food.

Bridge House Tavern - Penge

2 High Street, Penge, London SE20 8RZ

17-01-2010

Very glad to have a decent pub near to where I live. The staff are very friendly, babies are welcome and the food is good.

I'm not a big fan of the decor - it's a bit like the bedroom of a 20-something female with an Ikea addiction (though the old tables and chairs in the back get my vote) - and the music is a bit James Blunt, but I'm grateful that this pub exists in the world or I'd be crying in the corner of the Pawleyne Arms.

Shinykatie The food is nowhere near as good as it used to be. Been really disappointed with the last few visits. Veg so al dente that it's basically still raw, and very expensive.

anneckeensmith would be better if they never let in a ray piner

Murray Bros Butchers - Penge

146 High Street, Penge, London SE20 7EU

17-01-2010

A great, great butchers marooned in the middle of the pound shops of Penge. Lots of organic and free-range stuff but without the scary East Dulwich prices. Lovely staff too.

Vintagehart - Crystal Palace

96 Church Road (in the White Hart pub), Crystal Palace, London SE19 2EZ

07-11-2008

All shops should be in pubs as far as I’m concerned! Vintage Hart stocks a select choice of high quality vintage clothes in its tiny shop in the corner of the White Hart pub.

For such a small shop, it’s got an awful lot of character, including fluffy rugs in the changing room, fairy lights, and - most importantly - two lovely shop owners, Annette and Dawn.

Lovely little shop that adds heart to the White Hart.

Ecco Cafe - Covent Garden

186 Drury Lane, Holborn, London WC2B 5QD

08-09-2008

Buy yourself a sun-dried tomato panini (or a pizza, if that’s more your thing), head to the back room and spend a happy half hour reading your book on the sofa.

It’s not the smartest cafe in the world, the service isn’t particularly great, but the prices are really low, the coffee’s good and the scruffy, studenty atmosphere in the back room makes you feel like you’ve discovered somewhere secret and hidden away.

Which you have!

Ghurka Cottage - Crystal Palace

17 Westow Street, Crystal Palace, London SE19 3RY

19-07-2008

Ghurka Cottage is great - but make sure you order from the Nepalese section to get the most out of it! There’s no point ordering a bog standard curry when there’s Ghurka Chicken and Masu Batuwa to be had.

The only bad thing about this place is the decor. I can deal with old-fashioned - old fashioned curry houses have their own peculiar charm - but the interior feels a bit grotty and strangely unfinished as well.

Other than that, this is a really excellent curry house that will leave you feeling all happy inside.

Bookseller Crow on the Hill UK - Crystal Palace

50 Westow Street, Crystal Palace, London SE19 3AF

21-04-2008 (updated on 19-07-2008)

This is not only an excellent independent bookshop that is integral to the great atmosphere of the Crystal Palace Triangle, it's also run by John, a fantastic blogger who writes the http://booksellercrow.typepad.com/ blog. Add it to your RSS feeds - it's really funny and great for book nerds.

My other half, Alex Milway (shameless plug: http://www.themousehunter.com/blog/), had his book launch here and it was a really great night, with lots of local people coming in to show their support.

Crystal Palace Antiques Warehouse - Crystal Palace

Imperial Hse Jasper Road, London SE19 1SJ

21-04-2008

I’m torn between wanting to tell the world about this excellent 4-storey antiques warehouse that stocks hundreds of reasonably-priced second hand stuff that you usually pay 3x more for in Spitalfields, and wanting to keep really really quiet about this hidden gem of a shop.

After all, the busier it gets, the fewer lovely antiques there are for me and the rest of Crystal Palace to fill our flats.

The Stiperstones Inn - Stiperstones

Shrewsbury, Shropshire SY5 0LZ

18-03-2008 (updated on 21-04-2008)

I love the Stiperstones Inn - if only because it’s an important part of my childhood.

I went here again recently with a group of friends who were all amazed by how cheap it was to stay in such a quaint old inn with proper wobbly floors and an open fireplace. We sat in the bar drying out after a long walk, drinking real ales in our slippers - perfect!

The food is good - not gastro pub levels, but reasonable quality and a great price. The pies and puddings are just what you need after a day spent walking amongst the Stiperstones hills.

It’s in beautiful surroundings, with the Devil’s Chair nearby, a prehistoric stone circle, lots of puffball mushrooms and plenty of unspoilt countryside.
