The Cosy Club - Salisbury

49 New Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP1 2PH

03-09-2012

Ok, I got in here and the place looked nice: full of eclectic stuff that made it live up to its name, Cosy. There are antlers made into lights, various hunting trophies on the walls, lots and lots of wood and the lighting is excellent.

Unfortunately from an excellent first impression the only way I was going to be disappointed was by the follow up, and I proceeded to be disappointed with the kind of brutal efficiency than one would expect of the likes of Ryanair.

We arrived a little early (half an hour) by design so that we could have a drink at the bar before dinner. Despite 6 people behind the bar, it took half an hour to serve the 3 people in front of us (I'm not even exaggerating) so that we spent a pointless half hour standing around, unable to chat as we were keeping an eye on the service, thirsty to boot.

By the end of the half hour we were shown our table, with the promise of the drinks to come. Our order was taken pretty quickly: starters, lamb for main, with a couple of glasses of wine. Our previously ordered drinks turned up, and then the wrong starter, which was duly sent back. Then the main arrived before the starter came back. The lamb was not lamb: tough as old boots it had to be mutton, especially as it still had undercooked fat on it. Vegetables (swede, which I love) were cold. To top it off, as the plates were cleared away, the glasses of wine arrived. At least the desert was ok.

So bad food and disorganised (although to be honest pleasant) service. My stars are as follows: decor, service, food, excellence (a strange one, but allows me to reward that extra something that makes an evening). This place gets 1 for decor, 0.5 for service, 0.5 for food and 0 for excellence: 2 overall.

The meal, plus 2 cocktails and 2 glasses of cheapish wine came in at around £60.

Ok, I escaped here with my girlfriend for a romantic weekend away, and got a suite as advertised with a jacuzzi. First of all don't be fooled by the photo above, the place is right beside a busy main road, so no chance of opening a window without loads of noise, and with no aircon that's an issue. Next up the jacuzzi didn't actually work which changed it from a romantic getaway to a very expensive seaside b&b. Finally breakfast is charged at exorbitant prices: we ended up paying around £30 for a couple of croissants and a slice of toast, on top of £150 for a room. I expect that in a top London hotel, not a Devon village that is not even that close to the beach (10 minute drive) One star, for taking the mickey.

From surly barmen to dubious clientele, just don't go here! The other places around it are so much better...

Corries Cabin - Cowes

We arrived 2 mintes after closing time and they served us no problem. Probably best written menu in town, good selection of different fishes as well. The review below mentions bad cooking but we had no complaints.

Pretty reasonable prices (4 people + wine at ~£40), friendly staff made for a pleasant dinner.

Haslar Marina - Gosport

Haslar Road, Gosport, Hampshire PO12 1NU

Large marina with plenty of berths for visitors. There is a bit green converted lightship at the entrance with showers and a restaurant/bar/café that opens early for breakfast. The staff are helpful and very friendly.

The location is good as you can nip across to Portsmouth on a ferry (very frequent) and you’re bang in the middle of the historic dockyard

Three stars however for a really big problem: the visitors berths are right in front of the Marina entrance and all the cross channel ferries/ships etc. that go past most of the way through the night produce a spectacular amount of wash which is pretty uncomfortable. Hence I would recommend Gosport Marina which from memory doesn’t have that issue.

Shepherds Wharf - Cowes

done a lot of visiting Marinas around the Solent, and a comparative 3 stars for this one. The location is excellent, obviously, at 2 minutes walk from the centre of Cowes.

3 Stars because
- although the Marina itself has one café/greasy spoon place it only opens at 9:30, making it not so good for getting out on the water early
- My pet gripe, if we’re paying over £30 for a rafted berth overnight, then at least I expect showers without having to pay £1 per 2 minutes water (I timed it)
- Friendly staff however

The Anchor Inn - Cowes

Nice pub in the middle of Cowes high st, it seems to always have a nice atmosphere. There’s a big room at the back where they have live music most nights (we got a reggae number which was pretty good actually). definitely busy, it also serves food: can’t comment on it as I didn’t eat here but the neighbouring tables seemes happy with the speed of service and looked like decent portions at reasonable prices.

Would go back!

Just transferred though what appears to be the new terminal that other reviewers mention here.

There is a complete absence of anywhere to get a decent meal. There was one coffee place serving tired looking sandwiches and a place we ended up eating at that served microwaved quiche with a semblance of a salad.

The shops are pretty basic (one selling perfume, alcohol etc., but beware as it appears that half the goods on sale can’t be sold if you are travelling inside the European Union). I needed to find a charger for my iPhone and couldn’t find anything (this is an item that can be found nearly anywhere in the world)

All in all, you can’t always avoid airports but bring a packed lunch and a good book for this one!

London City airport - London

Royal Docks, London E16 2PB

My favourite of all airports as it is so conveniently placed to get to and from the City.

Add to that a fast, efficient check-in and bag drop area, nice security and pleasant waiting areas and you have a taste of air travel befoore everybody started doing it.

The flights from here tend to be a little more expensive but if you can afford it, the difference is well worth paying for.

Only downside is that a crosswind on landing approach can knock the plane off an extremely tight corridor and the plane then needs to take off, circle round the Thames estuary and land again, meaning that flights can get delayed.
