The Angel - Peterborough

4 St Osyths Lane, Peterborough PE8 4BG

24-08-2012

The address on these details is somewhat misleading because the Angel is in Oundle, some 10 miles from Peterborough.

However, to talk about the Angel. What a very pleasant pub it is. Not posh, not rough, just so. I found the staff here (during my week or so in Oundle) to be very friendly and pleasant. This place has locals and they are welcoming. I also enjoyed spending some time in the backyard which is conveniently situated by Coop and also the cash machine.

The food's pretty good and they have a late licence. Watch out for the lively karaoke on Friday nights! Poker nights are on Monday.

Ship Inn - Oundle

20 West Street, Peterborough PE8 4EF

24-08-2012

There are several lovely pubs to choose from in Oundle. But for a good friendly, country welcome, I think that the Ship won out. It's a rambling building set on the High Street not so far from the war memorial. Old, with several rooms and bags of character, it's a delight to visit.

And it clearly does a roaring trade. I found the after work crowd and the locals to be warm and welcoming. I was very impressed by the beer served and best of all were the tables outside on the lane at the back of the pub which were very pleasant on a warm evening.

Oundle School - Oundle

Church Street, Peterborough PE8 4GH

24-08-2012

Oundle School is one of the better private schools in England and it certainly dominates the town of Oundle itself, which is flourishing and pleasant.

But I'm not here to praise the school (fine as it is) but to recomemnd it as a wedding venue. A few weeks back, friends were married and the service and do was held at the school. The chapel is a fine Victorian church and the perfect setting for the ceremony. The Great Hall hosted the reception and before there were drinks on the lawn.

It is a great place for a wedding and I would recommend it.

Talbot Hotel - Oundle

New St, Peterborough PE8 4EA

23-08-2012

Now, the Talbot is rather posh. No bad thing: they've spent a packet on it in the past few years and it is now surely the only place to be seen in Oundle. It's a pub, a restaurant, a hotel and indeed has several holiday houses round the back. There's a very pleasant courtyard are and a modern glazed restaurant area.

And all this belies that the place is fantastically old and gracious. The staircase, they say, comes from Fotheringhay Castle (which is where Richard III was born and Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned.)

We stayed here because we attended a wedding in the town and it was the most convenient base. It is to be recommended.

Cook Hove - Hove

38 Church Road, Hove 01273 720221

13-07-2012

In our household, we call Cook "Posh Iceland". This branch has moved from Western Road in Brighton, just by Waitrose to this new location on Church Road in Hove, but they do the same thing. It's frozen food for people in hurry but it's high quality and very, very tasty.

I really think the various curries they do are top notch and prefer them to a takeaway. For £6.99 or thereabouts you get a very delicious dish for two and hearty portions they are. Also you can bag party nibbles and desserts to die for. Basically, if you so wish, you can pass this stuff off as your own. There's also a branch in Lewes. Not cheap, but good value. This is the good stuff.

GFC Kebab House - Hove

22 Church Road, Hove BN3 2FN

13-07-2012

If you're stumbling along in this part of Hove later in the evening, there isn't much to get your chops around that's any good. That's why I like GFC. It's a pretty good kebab house that also serves up the usual chicken and pizza sustanance that's vital after a few scoops. It's a buzzing place and very chummy. I recommend it. Excellent chicken wings and chicken shish.

Artisan - Hove

63 a Holland Road, Hove BN3 1BA

13-07-2012

There aren't many good French style restaurants in Brighton and Hove and the Artisan, just on Palmeira Square, comes pretty close to being a favourite. The white-washed chic doesn't really match the name but the food is pretty good, if sometimes verging on the pricey.

Seek out the weekday menu which is £19.50 for three courses including a glass of Kir Royale. And during the day you can usually get something bargainy for lunch. It's also a nice spot for a coffee and watching the world go by.

Lane & Stedman - Hove

100 Western Road, Hove BN3 1GA

13-07-2012

It seems that this summer, with all the damp, has meant that I have gone down with every bug going and just living down the road from Lane and Stedman, I've been been popping in a few times a month. It's a proper old-fashioned chemist and pharmacy on Western Road, just into Hove, and not far from Palmeira Square. They know what they're talking about in here. It may not be the cheapest place but when I describe my symptoms they always serve up a potion or tincture that does the trick. A real lifesaver.

kanok thai - Brighton

65 Preston Street, Brighton BN1 2HE

13-07-2012

Kanok Thai on the main eating drag in Brighon City Centre, Preston Street, is a friendly place. Always greeted with a smile, I recommend the mixed starter plate and then a traditional dish. The red thai curry is delicious but Mrs Sussexspy does like to plump for the pad thai. Not too expensive (and certainly not as pricey as the parking round here), this is a fun little restaurant that never disappoints.

The Sussex Beacon - Brighton

Bevendean Road, Brighton BN2 4DE

13-07-2012

It's fairly difficult to find anyone in Brighton and Hove who doesn't know about and appreciate the work of the magnificent Sussex Beacon. It's a charity that helps those who are affected by HIV/AIDs and the various illnesses that are related. The trustees are headed up by the well respect Simon Burgess and Chris Cooke acts as the fundraising head honcho. It's a remarkable facility that has brought many great comfort and long may it prosper.
