Cock & Lion - Marylebone

62 Wigmore Street, Marylebone, London W1U 2SA

24-01-2012

This pub is close to the office which makes it a good option for post-work drinks. What makes it even better is that it doesn’t have the crowds and large groups that other nearby bars have. The food is average and drinks prices what you’d expect, but it’s a cosy pub with plenty of room upstairs if there’s a few of you.

The Vineyard - Islington

179 Upper Street, London N1 1RG

24-01-2012

I was surprised that I actually quite liked this place having read quite a few bad reviews. I was there on a Friday night, post-work, and I didn’t have to queue long at the bar which is my usual gripe with these sorts of places.

There wasn’t much seating as most of it was booked out, but they didn’t mind us hanging around. The terrace at the front I imagine would be nice in the summer sun too.

Drink prices seemed about average. Overall, not a mind-blowing night out but pleasant enough.

Walmer Castle - Notting Hill

58 Ledbury Road, Notting Hill, London W11 2AJ

24-01-2012

This pub looks pretty nice from the outside, heck, that’s why we went in, but I wouldn’t make the mistake of ordering a soft drink again. There are no economies of scale in this pub, if you want a large coke you are charged for two which means our two soft drinks came to over £7.50.

Vue Cinemas - Westfield - Shepherds Bush

Westfield Shopping Centre, Ariel Way, London W12 7GF

24-01-2012

I thought this cinema was clean and comfortable. Yes, some of the ticket prices are high for the more premium screens, but you do have a choice. The standard tickets are the same as anywhere else now, which is expensive but also the going rate.

We went to see War Horse in the extreme screen which was a little bit more expensive (about £12.50) but the sound system was amazing, the picture was perfect and there was plenty of legroom and generous seating. The banking of the seats also means that short people like myself don’t have to worry about the person in front’s head being the main feature.

It’s probably worth buying a drink/snacks somewhere else to save a few pennies.

Diwan - Marylebone

31 Thayer Street, London W1U 2QR

24-01-2012

I’ve walked past this place so many times and, today, I went in for the first time. I ordered a chicken wrap which came with salad and garlic sauce (sorry colleagues). It was cooked while I waited and was really fresh, the chicken was moist and I had no complaints whatsoever.

Also, while I was there I dropped a £1 coin under the counter and on bending down to pick it up didn’t spot any dirt of grime which is pretty rare for nooks and crannies like that. I was reassured and will definitely go back, probably to eat in with a friend next time.

Nefertiti Hotel - Luxor

Al-Sahaby Lane, Luxor

24-01-2012

If you are looking for a budget hotel that’s conveniently located then this is it. It has a fab roof terrace overlooking Luxor temple with heaters provided in the evening.

The quality of the rooms varies, ours wasn’t too bad, but another couple had to change theirs, so check the room before committing and change it if you need to. I did find it very cold at night in December and the blankets weren’t really enough.

The breakfast was a bit limited but they do cook eggs fresh for you. There’s also a restaurant downstairs and you can order and eat on the roof terrace all day. It’s a dry hotel, no alcohol unless you manage to find some of your own from a nearby shop.

The reception can arrange excursions and guides for you at a reasonable price so definitely worth doing that, our hot air balloon ride was only about £35.

Ägyptisches Museum - Cairo

Al Tahrir, Kairo, Cairo, Al Qahirah, Ägypten, Cairo

24-01-2012

The museum seemed almost like an exhibit in itself. It’s dusty and old just like the things inside it. We saw as much as we could but there’s a lot there and you might find that things get a bit repetitive.

I was surprised by how many wood statues had survived and in such great condition though. I couldn’t help feeling though that many of the statues lacked the context of the original setting, some of them would have so much more impact if they were at their original temples.

The mummies exhibitions are an extra fee, almost twice the actual entry price so we didn’t bother doing it. A shame that it costs so much.

We visited Cairo when there was a lot of protesting going on in Tahrir Square and it’s worth mentioning that the museum is very close to that area. It had to be closed twice while we were staying in Cairo.

Nubisches Museum / Nubia Museum - Aswan

el Fanadek Street, (Opposite Basma Hotel), Aswan

24-01-2012

It’s a great building and we pretty much had it to ourselves when we visited in December 2011. The exhibits take you on a journey through Nubian history and end with information about the High Dam project and the preservation and relocation of sites that would have been lost beneath the man-made Lake Nasser.

The landscaped grounds of the museum are worth a look too, you can follow a waterway all around the gardens and it’s a welcome break from the hassle of the riverside.

Only down-side is the prices they want for a drink in the (deserted) cafe.

Salah ed Din - Aswan

Kornesh el-Nile st., Aswan

24-01-2012

Definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Egypt. The service was great and the food was amazing too, especially the freshly cooked, still-warm bread. My oriental aubergine salad starter was amazing and I can also recommend the chicken curry.

The staff were very friendly, our waiter tried to teach me some Nubian and when we left we were invited to sit in the manager’s office while waiting for our take-away beers. We went back 3 times in 3 days.

Best of all is the view from the boat part of the restaurant. Get here just before sunset and you’ll have the prettiest vista across the Nile, with all the felluccas coming in for the evening.

Sharks Bay Umbi Diving Village - Sharm el Sheikh

Sharm el Sheikh

24-01-2012

I really liked this small diving village. We stayed in a beach hut style room and it was clean, tidy and very reasonably priced. The diving facilities on site are top-notch with boat trips going out every day, including lots of off-shore sites. The coral and reefs are right on the beach here so it’s not the place for paddling, but great for snorkelling.

The breakfast had great variety and was fresh and tasty. The restaurant served delicious fresh fish in the evenings too, plus the Bedouin tea was perfect for late winter afternoons.

If you are looking for nightlife this isn’t really the spot, it takes a taxi ride into town which can get expensive if you keep going back and forth, bargain hard though. It’s a great spot to take in the underwater treasures and Egyptian sunshine.
