Big Top - Pontefract

A great playzone for the kids. It’s not huge, but there’s plenty to do for your younger children, with a ball pool & padded area for babies & toddlers, plus bigger area for older children. Parties catered for & drinks / snacks & lunch served.

The best Farm Shop in Yorkshire, if not the world! Actually, they are officially the number 1 prize winning Farm Shop in the UK. They have their own cows, including highland cattle, chickens that you can get your own eggs from & a selction of ride on toys for the kids to play on while you shop. They do hog roasts & children’s birthday parties too. My children love to go along, to pick their own eggs, play on the ride on tractors & pat the farm dogs.
Wakefield Museum - Wakefield

Lots to do for the children. It’s only a small building, but there’s plenty to do for a couple of hours & they have regular activities & sessions for children in the holidays.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park - Wakefield

A wonderful day out for all the family. Take walking shoes though, there’s a lot of walking and sheep dung! My children like the musical instruments you stand on best to make the sounds.
Nostell Priory - Nostell
Doncaster Rd, Wakefield, West Yorkshire WF4 1QE

A wonderful National Trust property. There’s lots of walks around the property, including a big lake & a triangular shaped obelisk gate building to admire. There’s the house itself to look around & the grounds. There’s a small National Trust gift shop & cafe (though a bigger cafe is currently being built outside the area you pay to get in) a Rose Garden, another lake, swings & a brand new (2008) adventure playground for the kids. There are regular events, craft shows & second hand book fairs.
Cocoon Kids - Pontefract

A wonderful little children’s boutique. The owner & staff are helpful & will get clothes from the stock room. There’s a changing room & a little play table. The sale rail is fab!
Meadowhall Centre - Sheffield
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S9 1EP

I’m not a fan of shopping centres, but I used to live Near Meadowhall, so grew to like it. There is a children’s outside playground at the cinema entrance & a playzone outside Argos, but it’s always busy & you need to stay. It’s great to sit with a coffee with a break though while your children play.

Pontefract Castle - Pontefract
Castle Garth, Pontefract, West Yorkshire WF8 1QH

The castle is a ruin, but is a wonderful place to walk around & explore. There are regular open days when you can go down into the cellars (used as a dungeon in the English Civil War) There is a very small cafe that sells takeaway drinks & snacks on some days, plus a small gift shop. There are also toilets. The Heritage Group holds re-enactments & craft fairs every so often on the site. Take a picnic on a nice day :)
Pontefract Museum - Pontefract
Salter Row, Pontefract, West Yorkshire WF8 1BA

The museum is only small & on 2 floors. My children love the photography exhibit where you can stick your heads through, bulding a castle out of wooden blocks & a jigsaw puzzle of Pontefract Castle. They have a different exhibition on one of the rooms every so often & we pop in regularly. They also have a disabled toilet on the ground floor, v useful if you or your child is caught short! There is a small gift shop.
