The Potteries Shopping Centre - Stoke-on-Trent
City Centre, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire ST1 1PS
02-06-2009
This is actually quite a good shopping centre for a place as small as Stoke-on-Trent. It houses all the main high street favourites which are easy to find and is very big.
Saturdays can get particularly busy but not as near as bad as some shopping complexes. It’s easy to navigate around and has a great little old style market area in the basement level which to this date I’ve seen no other mall do, this is a nice little touch even though I have rarely ventured in there for goods.
Shame they removed the food court, why did they do that anyway? Worth a visit if you live in the Staffordshire area.
CafeJava - Newcastle-under-Lyme
Newcastle, Staffordshire ST5 1QS
02-06-2009
I certainly miss this place since leaving the Stoke-on-Trent area for Carlisle and Manchester - an absolute gem of a coffee cafe.
Wonderfully stylish in orange, pine and silver make this place very trendy seeming but it isn’t. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, service of food and hot drinks is swift and they will even bring it to your table.
Lovely raised floor sitting area with chilled music playing, I could spend hours in this place - in fact I totally did as a student.
One of my favourite coffee shops ever!
Costa Coffee - Carlisle
66-68 Scotch Street, Carlisle, Cumbria CA3 8PN
02-06-2009
A fantastically situated coffee shop, slap bang in the centre of Carlisle’s shopping area - absolute haven for coffee loving people watchers!
That aside this coffee cafe has a large selection of caffinated hot drinks all a little more on the pricey side but good quality. Food such as sandwiches are a bit hit and miss considering the cost but a great place to sit outside, sip a Mocha and read a newspaper.
Service is always fast and friendly, worth a stop off definitely.
The Red Lion - Withington
532 Wilmslow Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M20 4BX
02-06-2009
The Red Lion is a country-esque pub in an urban setting. Great place to sit out and down a couple of pints during summer.
The pub itself is quite big instead, with a huge seating area outside (so expect it to be packed during these hot days we are currently having).
The people it draws in mainly consist of students and some older locals. The drinks it serves are average and unfortunately don’t specialise in any ales/wines but that shouldn’t put you off from which is a perfectly good pub.
ASDA Superstores - Manchester
100 Princess Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M15 5AS
02-06-2009
Always been a regular shopper at Asda, I find it much cheaper than most supermarkets to get in the weekly shop.
Although I shop here with my partner, I find is great for larger families shopping on a tight budget as Asda regularly have many multi deals on items.
Customer service is always good and efficient and shelves a fully stocked most of the time.
Only negative point I can think of about them is that they can be pretty slow compared to other supermarkets on getting new products on the shelf.
42nd Street - Manchester
2 Bootle Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M2 5GU
01-06-2009
42nd Street is a typical indie bar found close to the City Centre of Manchester, mainly drawing a student clientele with a few older folks.
In a way if does differ from some indie bars to the fact they pretty much completely focus on Indie music, new and old. Great for music lovers of this genre.
Drinks are of average price but they don’t seem to serve any specialised beverages. 42nd Street can get very busy at times but is generally a good night out.
Buffet Island Chinese Restaurant - Newcastle-under-Lyme
Liverpool Road, Liverpool Road, Newcastle, Staffordshire ST5 9HP
01-06-2009
I heard a lot of rave about Buffet Island on Milehouse Roundabout before I actually visited. Pretty much all I heard was good so my expectations were high.
For one it wasn’t as cheap as I expected, and the food quality was distinctly average. This is definitely a more family-orientated restaurant, so expect loads of noise and kids - avoid if you are after a quiet relaxing meal.
That being said, I did enjoy the meal and the fact they serve Sushi on the buffet as well is a nice little extra. Probably won’t be hurrying for a second visit, but if you love buffet places, you’ll find it hits the spot.
Old Brown Jug - Newcastle-under-Lyme
Bridge Street, Newcastle, Staffordshire ST5 2BH
01-06-2009
Small, quaint pub near the end of Newcastle City Centre so can be easily missed at times. Nice traditional style pub, friendly staff and locals - good choice of drinks, especially real ales all rather affordable.
One quite interesting attraction to the Jug is all the live music/salsa/acoustic nights they host.
Student friendly, worth a visit or two.
The Temple of Convenience - Manchester
Great Bridgewater Street, Just off Oxford Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 5JW
01-06-2009
One of the smallest bars I’ve ever seen, if you visit the Temple with, say, 10 friends, you will pretty much fill it. I’ve never really like this bar hugely, it comes across as a place that has its locals and other people aren’t really too welcome.
There’s a decent selection of beers and its reasonably priced for a bar near the city centre. Worth a visit for the novelty factor, but don’t expect to feel welcome!
Fab Cafe - Manchester
109 Portland Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 6DN
01-06-2009
This has to be the strangest bar in Manchester, but in a good way. Decked out in sci-fi and B-movie paraphernalia, its definitely unique looking.
The vibe is very friendly, never had a bad night or experience in here. The crowd is very mixed, although it does attract some quite eccentric types. The music is….well it could be anything on really! The staff are very friendly and the prices aren’t too dear. Well worth a visit
