The Mosque Kitchen - Edinburgh

50 Potterrow, Southside, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9BT

24-03-2013

This is about the tastiest, best value food you can eat - £3 for an enormous plate of mixed veg curry.
The only complaint is that the portion size is too big!
Unlike many similar cafes, this one uses its own permanent knives, forks and plates - so it's environmentally friendly too.
The cafe has been even better since they started using a speaker for the background music (it used to be played from a laptop with no external speakers, and was horribly tinny)
(To clarify - this review is about the Potterrow Mosque Kitchen, not the one on Nicholson St.)

Edinburgh Lock Centre - Edinburgh

78 Ratcliffe Terrace, Edinburgh, Scotland EH9 1ST

24-03-2013

I had a problem with my flat door lock a few months ago - when I got home I couldn't open the door.
My neighbour kindly invited me in and I searched online for a locksmith using his laptop.
Edinburgh Lock Centre was the first one I found with good reviews, so I called them.
The locksmith told me their callout charge was £80, and he came out within half an hour.

Our first face-to-face contact, just after he arrived and got out of his van, wasn't promising.
The conversation went something like this -
Me: Are you the locksmith?
Locksmith: Yes. How's it going?
Me: OK, how are you?
Locksmith: Better than you!
Yes, 'Better than you'. These were his exact words.

He realised that to let me in, he'd have to break the lock, and I agreed to this.
After he'd broken the lock and let me in, he told me that to later supply and install the replacement lock he recommended (Era Nightlatch) would cost another £148 (he did offer me a discount if I agreed to the work being done on the spot, but I wanted to discuss it with my wife first). The wood of the door was chipped around the area where the lock had been, but he told me the new lock would cover up the mess.

The next day, we decided to go ahead with his offer of the nightlatch, and another locksmith from Edinburgh Lock Centre came out and fitted it.

However, the wood around the new lock was still left in a mess.
I phoned the locksmith, who agreed to come back and patch up the door at 7pm the next day.
By 7:30pm, he hadn't arrived or called, so I called him.
He told me he'd been delayed on another job and would be along later - he hadn't had my number in his phone so hadn't been able to contact me.
He eventually arrived about 8pm and patched up the door with a wood filler.

The lock's anti-slip device was sticking for a while a few weeks ago, meaning that it was difficult to close the door - we had to slam it shut - I see from googling that other people have had a similar problem with this product. When I phoned the locksmith about this, he advised me to use WD40, which solved the issue.

All in all, a very negative experience:
Expensive - we paid £228 for our lock to be removed and replaced.
Impolite - 'Better than you'
Unreliable - turning up an hour late
Lack of attention to detail - the door was left looking dreadful

When an emergency repair is needed, the customer's priority is to get it done as quickly as possible. That's why, even though this was expensive, we went ahead with it. If you're in a similar situation, don't make the mistake of using Edinburgh Lock Centre.

locksmith666 DEAR

tonsagain

There was no call out charge you call came in after 7pm in the evening and took more than two hours of my time from start to finish so the charge was for my labour only at the time of the evening i think it was very reasonable.

About my remark it was said with a sense of humour at the time i remember you agreeing with me.if this offended you am really sorry and i apologise for that.

The open of the door

your Yale lock was faulty and would not open with key due to back box button gone faulty i would normally open this by letter box but this door did not have one. We then looked at gain entry threw other means. The only way to open this door was to remove the Yale lock from door which can and will cause little damage which was explained to you at the time.

I gave you a price to fit a new night latch lock to bs3621 high security at a cost of 148.50 pds there is more than two hours to fit this lock and i had no reason to give you a discount.

There was a small area that showed a wee bit damaged which we did return to amend yes i was a hour late and at the time apologised as am sure you will remember.

The latch stick yes your right this did happen and we use this lock a lot and found this problem before and we have taken this up with Yale but as i explain to you this can simply be solved with a we bit wd40 which i said would come and do this for you but you. Am really sorry to see the response
on here. As this lock come with a 10yr guarantee if you have any problems feel free to get back to use.

Low Cost Plumbing - Edinburgh

Big Brigs way, Edinburgh, Scotland EH22 4DG

10-11-2012 (updated on 27-01-2013)

I had a bad experience with this plumber last year.
I had a leak from a drainage pipe which was buried inside stonework / cement so difficult to get at.
The cause seemed to be a blockage further down the pipe which led to too much pressure in the water which built up with nowhere to go.
He came out first to have a look, and gave me a quote.
His next trip was to make the first repair (patching the leak), which failed - the pipe was still leaking.
When I told him this, he came back, rodded the pipe till it seemed clear, then patched the leak again.
However, this again didn't fix the problem.
I emailed him back to tell him this - and then - silence!
I tried phoning twice and emailing twice after this, but he had gone totally AWOL. I haven't heard a peep since.
I suppose he must have thought that this job was too difficult, and not worth spending any more time on - but it's hugely unprofessional to be uncontactable. Thankfully, I hadn't paid yet.
After all this, I called another plumber (First Call), who came out and recognised immediately that the blockage needed specialist equipment - he called out another plumber who had some hi-tech air blasting equipment, and this fixed the issue within half an hour.
The combined fee for the successful repair was less than the quote from 'Low Cost'!
********************************************************************************
In response to Low Cost's comment below:
1. This repair was to a pipe join accessible from outside. I don't remember Low Cost asking that I should stay at home while they investigated it.
2. I didn't leave my kitchen tap running, tho I did have a dripping tap (as acknowledged by Low Cost's email to me at the time saying 'the taps on the kitchen sink are dripping away') - tho actually there only is 1 tap in the kitchen sink.
3. Low Cost's point about their estimate being for the whole job, but First Call's being only for the removal of the blockage, is fair enough as far as it goes.
However, First Call recognised immediately that the blockage would need specialist equipment (and it was cleared within an hour or so), whereas Low Cost hadn't suggested this after several visits.
My main problem with Low Cost is not any of these issues, but that they decided not to continue with the work without telling me, and were thereafter uncontactable - as they put it 'we decided to cut our losses and walk away'.
As I'm sure almost everyone would agree, this is 100% unacceptable. I've only ever encountered 1 other tradesman who has done this.
It's interesting that Low Cost emailed me to say 'As for bad reviews disappearing of Qype, one email that is all its takes. But we will leave your one and will change our response. '
If it really is so easy for tradesmen to have negative reviews removed from Qype, then it's unsurprising that so many of them have high ratings!

plumb150 Sorry to hear about your poor experience with us. We have had a good look throughout Qype and could not find a longer detailed review anywhere in the country
It is my understanding that your issue was unblocked by jetter by First Call Plumbers and Clear It Drainage Services on the evening of the 4th of April, 2012 some 18 weeks after we visited your property (Dec 2011). Also the issue was a trap under the ground some 25-30 feet away from your leaking cast iron pipe you had asked us to have a look at. The blocked pipework also carried the rainwater from the roof.
You then appear with a poor review for us some 10 months after our wasted visits. Please remember that we spent 6 hours and money on materials to try and carry out a repair to a leak and not unblock a pipe.

As for having poor reviews removed, we think if that was possible this review would have disappeared months ago.
Still got a hole in your house we see after 14 months, maybe spend sometime getting that issue done at some point.

drumrobber bevery carefull with this " master trader", i’ll leave more detail about him.

Had a very positive experience with 1st Call earlier this year.
I'd had a bad experience with another plumber ('Low Cost') last year, see another of my reviews, re a leak from a drainage pipe.
After the other plumber went AWOL, I called 1st Call, who came out and recognised immediately that the blockage needed specialist equipment - they called out another plumber who had some hi-tech air blasting equipment, and this fixed the issue within half an hour.
The combined fee for the successful repair was less than the quote from 'Low Cost'!

Qype UK - Fitzrovia

This is the first time that I’ve posted a review of a site on the site itself, but here goes.

On 21/09/2009, I signed up for a Qype account as the user Tons. I still have my welcome mail.
I think I posted a couple of negative reviews on plumbers shortly afterwards, but then didn’t use my account for a long time.
When I tried to login on 30/10/2010, my account had mysteriously been deleted and replaced with another Tons, from France, whose profile reads ‘I’m tons from Anet. I’ve been Qyping since 18-12-2009’
I immediately emailed feedback@qype.co.uk, but got no answer.
On 11/09/2011, I emailed feedback@qype.co.uk again, copying in my previous mail, and this time did get an answer.
‘Hello, Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately we can’t find any Qype user with the email address xxxxx. But if you could tell us the Qype username you registered with, or forward us an email we’ve sent to you, we’d be happy to investigate’
When I did this, I got the reply:
‘Unfortunately we don’t have any record of your account on file, but if you could tell us what places you reviewed we can investigate this further. In the meantime, you’re more than welcome to register another Qype account with us.‘
Unfortunately, I don’t have any record of the places I reviewed. I’m not even 100% sure those reviews were with Qype
But this is beyond belief. You couldn’t make it up!
Is it possible that Qype delete reviews and accounts without warning if a business complains about a negative review?
Surely not, but it seems more likely than that one of these plumbers is a master hacker!
