So we were wondering about the streets around Spui, a group of 10 of us with empty bellies and simple fare in mind. After passing a few places we scanned the menu at Carel’s and were intrigued enough to enter. The fact that it was packed to the rafters was a good sign. The fact that the head waitress found out we weren’t Dutch and bundled us in a corner and ignored us, not so much.
We were told to wait 5 minutes while they set up a table for us. 45 minutes later we were seated and there was a distinct feeling that the staff weren’t too interested in us. Luckily we were all rather jovial so shrugged this off and enjoyed the evening.
There was a special on and I think it was 8 Euros for a steak and chips. It was a lovely cut of meat and done just right and we all tucked in hungrily though we had to keep going to the bar to order our drinks and if we were 'caught out’ we’d get a stern talking to. They’d probably have got far more business out of us if they’d popped back once or twice for drink orders and by dessert time besides the lively atmosphere and good food we were all a bit fed up so went elsewhere to continue our evening.
Really good feed and great meal specials, just don’t expect attentive service and you’ll be a-ok.

If you’re easily offended you should not venture into this sex museum. In fact what are you doing in Amsterdam?? It’s got the usual crass penis-shaped everythings (not that I go to a lot of these of course) but they’re got some pretty hilarious/startling/plain bloody crazy mechanical things that are just a little awkward to explain. Basically life-size figures acting out some luid sexual acts with, er explosions. And one that is pretty funny - to watch - there’s an area with a telly of porn through the ages with a line of seats to sit and watch. I won’t say which, but one of them vibrates violently once you sit on it which is pretty funny, and embarassing for the unsuspecting voyeur. Worth a visit as it only takes an hour to go round and is around 3 Euro entry. Could thing to do if the weather’s poorly and you’re not in to Amsterdam’s other offerings.

Als je snel beledigd bent, moet je dit seksmuseum niet bezoeken. En wat doe je dan eigenlijk in Amsterdam??? Ze hebben hier de lompe penisvormige dingen die je zou verwachten (niet dat ik vaak naar dit soort musea ga) maar je kan hier echt hilarische/afschrikkende/gewoonweg belachelijke mechanische dingen bekijken die ik niet kan omschrijven zonder me ongemakkelijk te voelen. Het zijn in principe levensgrote poppen die volop bezig zijn met rare seksuele handelingen met, eh, explosies. En het is best grappig om te zien. In een gedeelte van het museum kan je op een televisie porno door de jaren heen bekijken, inclusief een rij stoelen waar je kan gaan zitten kijken. Ik zal niet verklappen welke het is, maar een van de stoelen begint wild te trillen als je erop gaat zitten. Dat was erg grappig en ook gênant voor de nietsvermoedende voyeur. Het museum is een bezoek waard. Je doet er maar een uur over om alles te bekijken en de toegangsprijs is drie euro. Het is een leuke invulling van je dag als het weer slecht is en je geen fan bent van Amsterdams andere streekproducten.

I love the Heineken Experience - and I don’t even drink beer! It’s without a doubt in my top three must do’s in Amsterdam. You get to go through the process of making the beer, including a show-scan movie experience as you become a bottle in a factory. There’s bright green pods you can lie in and see the various advertising campaigns through the years. You get to taste the beer at various stages in it’s production and of course included in the price are a couple of beers. The best bit is at the end with a media room where you can use various intuitive machines to send messages home. My favourite was a karaoke type thing where you stand in front of a blue screen and sing Dutch words that pop up on a screen in front of you to some cheezy old music. The result is hilarious! They pop you into a boat on one of the canals surrounded by typically dressed people all singing with you and you sound awful. Definitely one of the best things to remember your trip by - you must go!

De Heineken Experience is geweldig! En ik drink niet eens bier. Dit is zonder twijfel een van mijn favoriete attracties in Amsterdam. Je krijgt het hele bierproductieproces te zien inclusief een simulatiefilm van wat er met je gebeurt als flesje in de fabriek. Je kan in een groene cocon liggen en de verschillende reclamecampagnes van de afgelopen jaren voorbij zien komen. Je kan bier in verschillende productiestadia proeven en natuurlijk zitten er ook een aantal pilsjes bij de prijs inbegrepen. Het beste gedeelte vindt plaats aan het einde in een mediakamer waar je door middel van verschillende machines een bericht naar huis kan sturen. Mijn favoriet was een karaoke-achtige machine waarbij je voor een blauw scherm moest gaan staan en Nederlandse woorden moest zingen die op het scherm voor je verschenen op een of ander oud muziekje. Het resultaat is hilarisch! Ze monteren je op een bootje in een van de kanalen, omgeven door mensen in klederdracht die met je mee zingen. Je klinkt echt waardeloos! Dit is absoluut een van de dingen die je moet onthouden als je ooit hier bent je moet ernaar toe!

Beautiful park in the centre of A’dam, Vondel Park is perfect for relaxing, pic nics, family time, a lazy sunny day, and even as a safe place if you’ve soaked up too much of the local legal vices. If you’re on a whirlwind weekend you could probably do without popping by, but if you do have time to spare, this is a massive and well-looked after park.

Prachtig park in het centrum van Amsterdam. Het Vondelpark is ideaal om te ontspannen, picknicks te organiseren, tijd met je familie te besteden, een zonnige dag door te brengen en je kan je er zelfs verschuilen als je te veel lokale, legale waar heb gebruikt. Als je hier tijdens een weekendje weg bent, zou je hier waarschijnlijk niet naartoe hoeven, maar als je wat extra tijd hebt zou ik zeker naar dit enorme en goed onderhouden park toegaan.

Mag ik zeggen dat het museum een beetje overgewaardeerd wordt? Van Gogh kan worden omschreven als een van de beste schilders die ooit heeft geleefd en er is meer bekend over zijn leven en dood dan over de meeste bekende schilders. Het is geweldig om een aantal van de bekende werken die je hebt bestudeerd in het echt te zien, maar onthoud wel dat er een aantal werken zicht ergens anders in de wereld bevinden. Als je een fan of student bent, zou ik zeker gaan, maar anders zijn er betere manieren om je tijd door te brengen. Oh, een leuk ding dat ze hier hebben, is een interactief kraampje waar je een persoonlijke videoboodschap kan opnemen en die via e-mail naar vrienden en familie kan sturen en dat is best leuk.

Am I allowed to say a teensy bit overrated? Van Gogh was arguably one of the best painters that existed and more is known about his life and death than many other painters. It’s great to see some of those famous artworks you’ve studied though bare in mind that some of them are elsewhere in the world. Go if you’re a fan or art student, otherwise there are better ways to fill your time. Oh one nifty thing they have here is an interactive stand that allows you to record a personal video message from the museum and send it via email to friends and family which is quite fun.
