Rampant Lion - Manchester

This would be an average pub if they showed any interest whatsoever in football. I had to ask the bartender to put on England this last summer, even though it was on the BBC. They have an average menu, an average selection of beers, but below average (watery, to be specific) mixed drinks. The cocktail jugs are a complete waste of money.

They have an exceptionally nice beer garden, which is their only above average attribute. But, what good is that when it rains 10 months of the year?

I wouldn’t go there at all if the only other neighborhood options weren’t Varsity or Wetherspoon’s.

Where I come from, we call this kind of place a “greasy spoon,” which means it serves all of the essentials for breakfast and lunch. If you are near the Uni and want an inexpensive cappuccino (£1.25 for a large to stay) without having to venture too far down Oxford, this is the place to go. The food is reasonably priced as well, although I’ve just been for the coffee.

This pub is just okay. Bear in mind, however, that I’ve only been here when United were playing and each time the sound was absolutely deafening and there were tons of hooligans. It was impossible to find a place to sit down anywhere. The bartenders are real nice though and were usually cute younger girls. It’s location in the city centre makes it a good after work place for folks down that way. I probably wouldn’t go there if it weren’t for my friends who like the place alot.

A great after work pub if you spend your day near the University. They have a pool table and are fixing up the back so the outdoor seating is on the upside. The bartender is very friendly and he occasionally brings his sheepdog with him, who sprawls out on the carpet practically begging for love. Three pounds for beer, 70 p for crisps.

I went here with a group of friends on the day of the FA cup final. All of the other pubs on Oxford were filled with Scottish hooligans, so that this place is off the beaten path was really great. The outdoor seating was fantastic on that sunny afternoon. When it got chillier, we went inside at grabbed a some appetizers and a few more drinks before leaving for the night. Overall, a cool place to hang out and I’ll no doubt return.

Overall, this is a pretty sweet pub. The atmosphere and decor is some of the best I’ve experienced in Manchester. I came on a Sunday to watch Man U clinch the Premier League this year and had a great time. For lunch, I had the pork roast, which was pretty tasty. Shy away from the bloody marys if you can. Although the projection tv screen in the back of the pub leaves a bit to be desired in terms of picture quality, the environment within the place makes up for it.

I shop here out of convenience more than anything else. In fact, when I enter, I find myself walking around seemingly aimlessly looking for something worth the money. Their produce is overpriced and lacks variety. Walk one block down to Worldwide for cheaper, higher quality fruits and veggies. When I do come, it’s often after everything else has closed and its to buy milk, occasionally cereal, bread, etc. I was pleased to find they sell fromage frais, however.

Worldwide Food Store - Rusholme

This a great place to buy fresh and usually locally-grown produce along with essential herbs, spices, rice, and oils. It also gives you a chance to walk the aisles and ponder many of the foods that are exotic to most people in Manchester. If you enjoy cooking and you live in the Rusholme vicinity, you should do some of your food shopping here. They’re open pretty late, too (until 10pm).

By shopping here, I also feel good because I know I am supporting a local business.

If you go here realizing you’re going to spend at least £25 for dinner and a drink, you’ll have a nice time. It is a massive building out near Manchester City Stadium with dining on the first floor and lounge on the second floor. I did not go for the night clubbing, but I imagine it to be a nice time. The lounge has many little “pods” with large couches within them for, well, lounging. A friend of mine said you can reserve the pods for a night, but you have to buy a bottle of champagne.

The dining area on the first floor is very nicely decorated with what I would call neocultural contemporary. There is a classy volume of neon highlighted illuminated busts of the Buddha. Much thought clearly went into the lighting and interior design. It makes for a nice mood, overall.

I ordered the baked tofu and bean vermicelli with vegetables, which comes served in a clay pot for £8. It had a very nice flavor and I enjoyed it very much.

The bottom line is that if you have the money to throw down, you should go here.

My experience was almost identical to that of saralouise. Two friends and I went on a Friday night around 8:30pm, which shouldn’t have made any difference. As with the others, our popodoms and chutneys were on the table immediately. I knew what I going to order even before I opened the menu…panir tikka masala with garlic naan, so we were ready to order within five or ten minutes and did. Our drinks came right away. However, our food did not arrive for 45 MINUTES. There were many empty tables by this point and most of the dinner crowd had waned away. When my food finally arrived, I was very disappointed in the curry. Firstly, it looked awful. Every panir tikka I’ve ever eaten has been orange. This was bright red. Ok, so it means they added a ton of chili powder right? That could be fine. When I tasted it, it turned out to be just food colouring. There was hardly any flavor at all, besides a slight bitterness.

The naan was good, however, and the server was very nice during out interactions. For me, it ultimately comes down to the main course, though.
