HiFi im Hinterhof GmbH - Kreuzberg

Großbeerenstr. 65/66, 10963 Berlin

06-04-2013

It's not often that I'm annoyed enough to give a 1-star review, but today Hifi im Hinterhof made me this way. Two weeks ago I walked into their store to ask about whether they could arrange to get my speakers (which they stock) fixed. They said "sure, just bring them in". Today I took my speakers to them. It's worth noting about now that they are located on the other side of Berlin and my speakers are rather heavy, so I had to hire a car.

Of course, when I arrived they told me that they actually can't get them repaired and that I should take them to some other place that is again miles away and only open on weekday afternoons... gah!

So 1-star for pathetic, misleading service, wasting 2 hours of my time and the car money.

hifi_im_hinterhof Hello aLii,

We are thoroughly sorry for the inconvenience and disturbance the procedure has caused you. Evidently and regrettably we did not perform as we commonly do.

Please accept our apologies. As a token of remediation we offer the following: If you submit the receipt / invoice for the repair/maintenance of your speaker(s) we will partially reimburse the costs. Please contact us via Qype for we don’t know your real name.

Again, our apologies for this unfortunate course of events.

Café Vesper - Kreuzberg

Liegnitzer Straße 30, 10999 Berlin

Great little cafe. They have awesome bagels and the bulgur salad is super tasty. The prices are good, but with the location being a little bit off the beaten track it's never overly busy. All of the above means that Vesper has become a lunch staple of mine recently.

Blarney Irish Pub - Kreuzberg

Methfesselstr. 4, 10965 Berlin

Good little Irish pub. It's great that their website details which football games they plan to be showing :)

Unendlich - Prenzlauer Berg

Bötzowstr. 14, 10407 Berlin

Pretty cool little rock bar in pretty random location. I was there on a weekday night, and we got very fast & friendly table service, although this may well have been due to the fact that there were only a handful of people in the entire bar. I guess it livens sup a bit on weekends.

They place unending rock & metal videos on the big screen TV, which can be quite entertaining :)

Berliner Dom - Mitte

Am Lustgarten 1, Berliner Dom, 10178 Berlin

02-06-2012

Berlin's main church, the Berliner Dom, was a much more impressive day out than I had imagined. There is an entrance fee of €7 (or €4 with a tourist card), which is expensive for a church, but definitely worth it.

The church itself isn't huge inside, but the dome is huge and the ceiling impressively high. The decorations are pretty amazing and the organ looks pretty incredible although we didn't get to hear it playing properly.

Upstairs there is a museum of past designs of the Dom (it has been completely rebuilt twice). There are also all sorts of plans and models from the last competition to redesign the church (in the 1890s). You can easily spend an hour looking around this. Unfortunately, most of the descriptions are only in German though - for the entrance cost this really ought to be rectified.

Higher up, you get to walk around the outside of the dome and get some amazing photos. Note: the first time you walk around the dome is inside and the windows are incredibly dirty - you will go up again and then outside!

Downstairs is the crypt where most of the Prussian royalty from the past 400 years are buried. A lot of the coffins are incredibly detailed, but mainly are damaged. Again, all of the descriptions are only in German, which can make it a bit hard to follow who was who...

Aceto Lokanta - Treptow

Elsenstraße 26, 12435 Berlin

Very cheap pizza and pasta, but as so often in life, you get what you pay for. The food is very average.

Bonus points are that it's open all hours and that is has a lot of outdoor seating.

Cafe Provinz - Treptow

Bouchéstr. 79a, 12435 Berlin

02-06-2012

I've been sat in Cafe Provinz for a few hours now. It's a very nice and laidback cafe. The decor is interesting and unpretentious. The (background) music is good. They have free password-free wifi and the food and service are good. What's not to like? It seems pretty awesome to me. Even the prices are quite cheap (well it is Berlin, but still).

Almost Famous - Manchester

83 High St, Manchester, Greater Manchester M4 1BE

26-04-2012

Almost Famous is an almost painfully hip burger & cocktail joint. It’s currently trading off of a “we’re a pop-up restaurant that will only be here for a short period” story and is hidden away behind a windowless door. At the door, you’ll find a doorman, who probably won’t let you in right now as they’re full at the moment, “could you come back in 20 minutes?”. You can’t make reservations.

Anyway, get beyond that, and you’ll find a pretty cool restaurant that serves pretty good burgers (if a bit over-done for my tastes) and really good fries. They also do pretty reasonable cocktails – generally serving in jars with glow-sticks. I didn’t realise until I saw them making the cocktails, but the jars are really quite an ingenious idea. Instead of transferring the drink to a cocktail shaker, just put a lid on the jar and shake!

Getting in wasn’t very painful really, and we arrived at about 7:30pm on a Saturday. We waited for about 40 minutes, but 30 minutes of that was because we went to the bar next door and had a leisurely drink.

At £6.50 for a burger and fries and £7 a cocktail, the prices are pretty fair.

STILBRUCH - Altona

Ruhrstraße 51, 22761 Hamburg

26-04-2012

Stilbruch is basically the IKEA of second-hand, out-of-fashion tat.

They have a lot of very cheap sofas, if you don’t care how your sofa looks. I once bought a pretty decent desk chair for €12, but have never found anything else of much interest there.

Their tat includes: sofas, dining tables, chairs, cupboards, the odd bed, some bikes, clothes, porcelain, very old electronics, light fittings… you get the picture.

Mr Dam - St. Pauli

Karolinenstr 24, Hamburg

27-03-2012

I love the Mr Dam chain. My guess is that it’s actually confined to just a few locations in Hamburg, but maybe it’s bigger.

All Mr Dam’s follow the same formula: Authentic Thai food, cooked fresh and at a very reasonable price.

I tried out this latest addition for lunch today and got a chicken massamam curry for €4.90. It was the lunchtime daily special, but even at a peak time it would only cost about €6.50. As it was a beautiful day, we asked whether we could sit outside and the staff happily carried out a table and benches for us!

Great service, great food, great price.
