The London Theatre - New Cross - New Cross

Pass this place everyday on the way to the station, ventured in on Friday to see a production there called 'Homework' after the media had been raving about the play.  The cast and the production were excellent. The theatre, well go and check this place out for yourself, there is nothing to compare it with and this makes it 'A great little gem of a find.   (direct quote from TNT magazine who recommend the play in their current edition.

From the front it theatre is in the basement of a Victorian house on the busy New Cross Road.  Walk in and it's like a old fashioned speakeasy with jazz music piped around and a cute Victorian room  with old photos from past productions and a bar to one side with a very friendly Phil Mitchell doppelganger , he must get it all the time! (no Peggy or Grant did we see) serving whom is so self deprecating on the venue in a way which shows he actually really loves the place and is so funny on what he comes out with during the pre and post show mobile phone switch off announcements.

Once through the front doors, nothing about this place screams New Cross, no trendy art, no experimental performance, just a proper little professional theatre with a proper mix of all ages and not an overpowering student led establishments.

The whole place has character and you do feel special once inside, it's like your own private theatre.  The main bar area looks like it has been there for years but actually the whole place is brand new and just designed to look old.  Have a look at the pictures, they are from productions only a few months old but done in a way that it is old shots.

ps 'Homework' the current production on deserves all the 5* reviews it is getting, very powerful writing and two central performances.

Took 15 minutes to be served a crustless quiche (homemade and a small slice) but was actually made so no major prep and sitting on the counter waiting to be used and a big spoonful of salad again waiting to be used.    For 14 and a half minutes of the 15 mins the staff didn't plate it and serve it.  Coffee took 5 mins and a great coffee but pricey.  Very small cafe but the staff of three still unable to cope.  I so wanted to like this place, but felt once the food arrived was rushed as others lurking over waiting for me to finish to get a seat on the only table they have inside.
