Keston Lodge - Islington

131 Upper Street, Upper Street, London N1 1QP

19-11-2008

The Lamb - Bloomsbury

94 Lamb's Conduit Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1N 3LZ

06-10-2008

Great pub in the center of London… It’s on a perfect little street in Bloomsbury and all old-fashioned decor and pints. Friendly staff and an electic mix of 'locals’ (let your imagination work out just how eccentric most of the people who can afford to live in this desirable area can be), tourists and UCL students from nearby halls.
It’s not bad price unless you drink spirits but the down side of this place is the food - this is a Young’s brewery pub after all, guaranteeing good bitter but average (and expensive) meals.

Ciao Bella Restaurant - Bloomsbury

90 Lambs Conduit Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1N 3LZ

I love this Italian - it’s on one of my favorite streets in London (the very quaint Lamb Conduits Street) and the food is always excellent.
I’m not alone though - it’s get very busy and even on a weekday they’re turning people away. Probably has something to do with the cheap prices in this part of the capital, the staff, the complimentary olives and breadsticks, authentic ingredients and the fact that you can guarantee a great (and pretty lively) meal any night of the week.
Try the tiramisu. It’s homemade and won’t disappoint…

The Lord Clyde - Canonbury

342 Essex Road, Canonbury, London N1 3PB

06-10-2008

Lovely pub up the less fashionable end of Essex Road. It has a proper 'local’ feel thanks to the regulars and the super-friendly bar staff who introduce themseves and remember your odrer that you wouldn’t expect from the glamorous exterior and chic wood floors. Menu is decent (more gastro-pub than regular fare) and the dishes certainly lived up to expectations.

Old Queens Head - Islington

44 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 8LN

I’ve never been on a weekend but during the week this old-fashioned pub is guaranteed to give you a lively night out! Not too expensive considering this is Essex Road and big cozy sofas and chandeliers make it stand out from the crowd in Islington. Best event to look out for - the monthly 'Jazz on the Road’ (3rd Thursday of every month). Live jazz, dancers and fun - couldn’t ask for more.

The Almeida - Islington

30 Almeida Street, Islington, London N1 1AD

06-10-2008

All I can say is… excellent! There are already some detailed reviews about the menu etc. so I’ll try not to bore everyone with too much gushing. Basically, the choice is decent (real French cuisine rather than generic dishes) but what makes the Almeida stand out is the quality of the ingredients.
My Cornish crab starter tasted as though it had been plucked from the sea a mere moment before and the mains and pudding were just as excellent and Ill recommend the creme brulee just for the amazing little madeline cake that comes with it…
Service is lovely - attentive and rather sweet. When we said we would share a desert, they thoughtfully bought two little plates as well as extra cutlery.
£25 for 2 courses and a wine list that includes with some tasty but affordable vintages (and the option of getting a carafe - about 2/3 of a bottle - just like they do in France) means the price isn’t half bad for the quality, either.

Could do better.
Happy hour every evening make this bar more affordable than some of fashionable Upper Street…but the staff are slow and pretty rude and the furniture is more than a little tatty. Yes, it’s 'retro’ style - but that shouldn’t mean dirty or broken too…
Nice cocktails and atmosphere, all in all (despite the bar staff), but I wouldn’t exactly recommend it.

The Pineapple - Kentish Town

51 Leverton Street, Kentish Town, London NW5 2NX

09-09-2008

Great pub in Kentish Town with lovely log fires in the winter (how sad that it’s cold enough for them already in September) and a sunny conservatory for summer.
The decor is great - think old-fashioned Regency style with plenty of mirrors.
The Thai food is also good and pretty reasonable for a pub mal in NW5. My one criticism would be - who thought people would want to eat noodles in this setting? It may all be great stuff, but something doesn’t quite add up there.

Ain't nothing but... The Blues Bar - Soho

20 Kingly Street, Soho, London W1B 5PZ

08-09-2008

Not much to say about this place except… best night out I’ve had in London.
The atmosphere is unbeatable, with everyone on their feet and dancing when the band comes on around 10.30pm.
Yes it’s small and busy but it never feels overly crowded - the bouncers don’t just let people in after a while, it really is one-in-one-out from about 9pm.
It’s just a place for great, uncomplicated fun I guess. None of the usual Soho sleaze or Shoreditch gurners…

The Macbeth - Shoreditch

70 Hoxton Street, Hoxton, London N1 6LP

05-09-2008

I first went to this hidden Hoxton bar when a friend of mine was playing a gig there and surrounded by mates and decent music, I thought it was genius. And reasonable for the Old Street location.
But when we returned some Fridays later, what sight should meet our eyes but a ton of over-dressed Shoreditch types trying not to gurn too aggressively and unsure how to pose at the same time as shuffling to Girls Aloud. There was a girl on the dance floor touching herself at one point. Don’t think it was ironic.
In short - a nice enough venue, just take care what night you go there or you may get a nasty surprise.
