Miner's Welfare Hall - Seven Sisters

Heol-Y-Felin, Neath, Wales SA10 9BN

07-10-2008

The Miner’s Welfare Hall in Seven Sisters was once a very busy club and always had a good show or some other event going on, but over the last few years it seems to be a place for youngsters to go and coupled with the demise of the mining industry in the Dulais Valley, it’s lost it’s community spirt and is now just like any other club.

Vale of Neath Leisure Centre - Glynneath

Chain Road, Neath, Wales SA11 5HW

06-10-2008

The Vale of Neath Leisure centre is a great place to get some exercise and relax.
The free form pool is large and you can walk in it, making it very accessible for people with disabilities.
There is a Spa pool just to the side of the main pool and also a Hydro-slide (I’ve never been brave enough to go on it).
There’s a lot of classes to choose from such as Aqua Aerobics and Swimming lessons and also early bird swimming.
There is also a well equiped gym, but I only used it the once as it is always full of poser type men who make me feel very self concious and as there’s no women only session I just leave them to it.
The Leisure Centre is having a big overhaul at the moment with lots of building work going on to improve the facilities and offer a more varied programme of activities, work should be ending soon.

The Gradon - Crynant

111 Main Road, Neath, Wales SA10 8PF

05-10-2008

The Gradon has always been very popular pub, it is warm and friendly and has many regulars, but by far the best thing about the Gradon is the food.
I have never been disappointed with anything I have eaten here and if you want sunday lunch then I suggest you book it, because people travel from far and wide just to eat here on a sunday.
I have also attended a few works Christmas parties here, and they really do themselves proud. The food is good as is the entertainment and the atmosphere.
Happy eating.

Banwen News, Food & Wine - Dyffryn Cellwen

12 Main Road, Neath, Wales SA10 9HR

A great family run business Wendy’s as it’s known locally is a great place for all your day to day shopping.
They also cook and sell pies, pasties etc and sell Calor Gas and Coal and will always deliver your groceries for you if needed.

Memos - Seven Sisters

High Street, Neath, Wales SA10 9DN

03-10-2008

What better way to end a night on the town than calling to your local Kebab House?
Hate the things myself, but they’re a favourite with my son and his mates and Memo’s is a very clean and well staffed Kebab House.
They also do free deliveries which are very popular locally and will create any pizza you can suggest (just ask my nephew about his chocolate one)!

Jane_Elizabeth A chocolate pizza?! Ugh!!

Co-op - Glynneath

High Street, Neath, Wales SA11 5AL

03-10-2008

This is the place where everyone that’s too old to work in Maccy D’s ends up.
The staff are surly (well what little staff there are) and can turn you to stone with a sideways glance.
The shop is always clean, but it takes a brave person to ask for some assistance if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
You have been warned!

Jane_Elizabeth Oh dear, sounds awful - don’t think I’ll bother!! (I like the Coop in Brecon and they’re quite friendly in there, though it’s a bit far to go!)

Mcdonalds - Glynneath

Glynneath business park, Neath, Wales SA10 7DR

03-10-2008

Not that I’m a lover of fast food, but I often find myself visiting my local Maccy D’s on a Sunday evening for my lazy son.
The staff there have mainly been extras in the Kevin & Perry go Large film, any one of them could give Kevin a run for his money, I certainly wouldn’t nominate them for any awards, yet the place seems very popular and my son loves the food (where did I go wrong)?

andygee64 Go on we could always create an award to ensure they never get to abuse day release scheme again ha ha!

National Showcases Centre for Wales - Brecon

Dan-yr-Ogof, Abercrave,, Abercrave, Brecon, Powys SA9 1GJ

03-10-2008

The showcaves at Dan-yr-Ogof are the most spectacular caves I have ever visited. There is the Dan-yr-Ogof cave, the Bronze cave and my favourite the Cathedral cave. The stalagtites are thousands of years old and the lighting really adds to the ambience of the cave.
There is a Dinosaur park for the children and you can also camp there too. A great holiday base in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Jane_Elizabeth You seem to have visited all the places around here where I’ve never been!! Must go there sometime - it sounds wonderful.

The Dyffryn - Dyffryn Cellwen

58 Main Road, Neath, Wales SA10 9LA

03-10-2008

The Dyffryn or as it’s known locally, The Belt, is a proper local pub. The whole village tend to gravitate towards The Belt and it really is the place to be on a weekend.
There are many shows held here and they are always popular.
The landlord is tough but fair so there is seldom any fighting inside the pub (there have been many a fight outside though), but I guess that all adds to a good night out!

Dove Workshop - Banwen

Banwen Community Centre, Neath, Wales SA10 9LW

03-10-2008

The Dove workshop offers a great service in the Dulais Valley.
As part of Swansea University, it holds various courses for people for all abilities. Everything from Degrees to Cookery to gardening, you’ll find something to suit you.
There is a lovely little cafe on site as well as creche facilities and an allotment.
