Fresh Basil - Belper

23 Strutt Street, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 1UN

30-03-2012

Popped in to get some lunch to take to the Riverside Gardens. So much choice! I decided to go for a salad. While it was tasty, I think for £2.90 it wasn’t value for money. It was 90% rocket which is hard to eat in that quantity and I didn’t! It may be my fault, but I forgot to ask for a fork, assuming that one would be included along with a napkin, which wasn’t either! Eating hummous, beans and beetroot outside with my fingers was an experience! But I don’t want to do it again, so please give your takeaways a fork and napkin, or at the least ask if they are required.

The Staincliffe Hotel - Hartlepool

The Cliff, Hartlepool TS25 1AB

05-12-2011

The hotel came to our rescue when we had booked into a B&B in the town and left in disgust! (Yes, I will be writing about it!!)
I travel to Hartlepool regularly and always eat here in the evening. The food is really good and they do lovely fresh vegetables – not always easy in Hartlepool!
We stayed in the suites which come in at a hefty £80 a night. The bed was so comfortable, large and not too soft or hard and the room was clean. The view is superlative. Overlooking the sea with a bay window and chairs to sit in watching the waves! Lovely!
However…. I was very disappointed in the decoration which is now tired and a bit outdated. There were no toiletries at all, not even hand soap! which is
a bit bizarre! There were no slippers or gowns which I would expect for that price in Hartlepool. The wi-fi didn’t work in the room at all and the telly was a basic 5 channels.
However, I would stay again if I could afford it just for the view and the food!

The Apple Tree Inn - Glastonbury

Appletree Inn, Glastonbury, Somerset BA6 8ND

05-12-2011

It’s not actually in Glastonbury but is very close.
The views are lovely and though it’s on the road, it’s not so busy that it intrudes.
We had an evening meal here too which was extremely tasty, served with a lovely smile! Couldn’t be better. Breakfast too was of a really good quality and well cooked.
I would have given 4 stars had it not been for a few niggles about the room. Firstly there was nowhere to hang clothes except a rail in the bathroom, which, if you’re staying more than one night, means damp clothes. Secondly, the tea and coffee, while excellent (no nescafe here!) are ensconced in a chest. This looks lovely, but is very awkward to get at! I also ended up making tea on the floor as there was nowhere to put the kettle/teapot/mugs etc. Fresh milk was a welcome change. Mind you, being surrounded by farms and cows….!
I would definitely stay here again.

Trent Bridge Inn - Nottingham

2 Radcliffe Road, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG2 6AA

30-09-2011

Now a Weatherspoon but with a twist! It’s REALLY nice inside!
I remember it from years back and have watched it’s decline over the years culminating in the abuse heaped on it by whichever pub chain it was who last owned it- I can’t remember! Anyway they painted it white and there was a huge outcry!
Had lunch there today and it was very pleasant. Good service; – my choice was unavailable so they offered me a free drink which was lovely! I didn’t take it bit was nice to have the offer! Many places could learn from this!
So while I would probably avoind it on cricket/football days, I can highly reccomend it as a place to eat or drink.

White Hart - Bouth

Bouth, Ulverston, Cumbria LA12 8JB

19-08-2011

Stayed here for 5 nights this month while attending the festival at Conishead Priory.
Our room was clean and comfy with a fantastic view and the en-suite was clean and the shower nice and strong with good temperature control. Bed was very comfy and I slept well – which is unusual for me as I struggle with new beds!
I ate the first night and the pie and chips were lovely and plentiful!
Breakfast was plentiful and of good quality. the time frame is a little odd – 8.30-9.00 not much good if you’re on holiday and want a late start. But they were very accommodating at our request for a 7.30 start.
The only slight downside was the air conditioning for the kitchen right outside our window. It seems to be a problem for lots of places – it has to go somewhere and it did stop at 11ish.

no 14 bistro - Lincoln

14 Bailgate, Lincoln , Lincoln, Lincolnshire LN1 3AE

19-08-2011

We spent a pleasant few hours in Lincoln… well walking up the hill wasn’t pleasant but still!
Hungry by the time we got to the top we spotted this clean, contemporary restaurant. We didn’t notice the menu outside said that the lunch menu was only available from Sun-Thurs. On looking at the A la Carte menu, we blanched as it was very expensive!
However, an extra star was earned because the waitress checked with the manager and said we could access the special menu. This was very considerate, but I think they need to address this issue as two more people walked in… and walked out ; I can only assume for the same reason.
That said, the food was lovely. I had a filled crepe, tasty and hot and my companions both had the whitebait which was delicious.
They would have had 4 stars but sadly there was only one high chair which was occupied when we went in. By the time it became free our youngest member had had enough and we had to take turns taking her outside to save the ears of the other diners!
Recommended highly and I think an evening meal there may well be one to remember!

bensons guest house - Worthing

143 Brighton Road, Worthing, West Sussex BN11 2EU

04-01-2011

We spent a lovely, comfortable night here. Wendy and Chrissy were very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. There were lots of little touches, like fruit and chocolates which added to the sense of care.
The view from our room. the 'French' room, was apparently lovely! There was lots of fog when we stayed!
The only little niggle would be for bath sheets not towels - but this is a common thing for me in most B&Bs and is a very small complaint!

Hôtel du Parc - Montpellier Center

8 Rue Achille Bégé, 34090 Montpellier

04-11-2010

I've given a 2star hotel 4 !
It deserves it.
Clean, friendly, lovely breakfasts and they let you practise your 30 year old school French on them!
It's a short walk to the old town and the helpful and knowledgable staff can tell you where/how/what to go and see.
THe town itself is full of hidden alleys and corners, tempting you to diverge off your chosen path and even (it seems) deliberately taking you somewhere else! Fortunately it's a manageable town centre and you always end up somewhere you recognise!
A couple of fab markets too which we used for lunch things.
Downsides? None for the hotel - it's lovely except it would be nice to have an evening meal there. For the town - its expensive for coffee! And wine!! And don't bother with the walking tour. We had to give up as the guide was horrible and didn't follow the procedure of letting us know where on the map we were. She only had to say numbers in French; I wasn't expecting any special treatment but she made it perfectly clear that she didn't want 'foreigners' there!

The Blenheim House - Etwall

56 Main Street, Etwall, Derby, Derbyshire DE65 6LP

24-10-2010

We stopped here yesterday on one of those lovely moments when you need somewhere to eat, work and drink!
What a surprise!
Most times it's a case of putting up with whatever is on offer. Here, even though they were getting ready for a 200 person bash - they were friendly and accomodating, even setting a table for us despite our only wanting a bar snack. 5 stars for that!
The food was ok - I have a feeling it's actually much better, but I'm letting them off because they were obviously very busy!
We were also able to finish our work in the bar; we weren't rushed and didn't feel pressured to go; even the tables being carried past us!

Edin's Deli Cafe - Nottingham

15 Broad Street, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 3AJ

11-05-2010

We kept saying " We must go there!" everytime we went to the Broadwy. We weren't at the Broadway, but we did make it!
Had a latish lunch so the daily 'prix'fixe' (which is very good value) had gone. I had a pork chop and butter bean cassoulet and my husband had fish cakes. Both were really delicious.
We will definitely go back. The 2 things that give a slight downside is that you are slightly squashed in the front part (there is a more spacious rear part and a downstairs that wasn't open) and the toilets were not as clean as I would have liked.
Overall a lovely meal, nice atmosphere and good service make this a must to visit again.
