bacco italia glasgow is a modern wine bar and restaurant on the main road in shawlands on the south side of glasgow but only 5 mins from city centre
open from 10am - they serve breakfast / lunch / dinner and have been featured in the list and independant
- good service / great italian food & wine - 50 different varieties from all over the country - many can be bought by the glass / champagne and cocktails
- they have various events throughout the year including special dinners and wine tastings
- came here just before christmas last year and was served by the same waiter who worked in the hotel I stayed at in sorrento - spooky !
open 7 days from 10am

Malmaison Glasgow - Glasgow

278 West George Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 4LL

25-01-2009

the malmaison-glasgow is one of a small group of boutique hotels in the uk and abroad
- they are often to be found in exotic victorian buildings and this one is in a huge edifice styled like an egyptian temple - and previously an episcopal church
the style is pure luxury - the suites are the very last word in comfort and are mostly unique
its a very special place … almost don’t want to tell people about it
fantastic bar and brasserie - superb food and wine list

Jenners Princes Street Edinburgh - Edinburgh

47 Princes Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 2YJ

17-12-2008

OMG what have HOF done to this beloved store ?!?
this was an edinburgh institution which I have always visited at christmas time to get some special presents but since house of fraser have taken over it has changed beyond belief
- spent hours walking around in a daze trying to find my favourite departments with little or no success :(
jenners was the harrods of edinburgh and had a fabulous food hall - this is now a concession of valvona & crolla (well known edinburgh italian deli) and whilst their products are great, I really missed all the special lines that jenners used to stock
- perhaps they should now provide route maps for customers to find the various departments as it is a rabbit warren of a building - easy to find though just across from waverley station on princes street
... however if you are looking for a last minute party frock there are a lot on offer up to 50% off !

Ally1310 I moved away from Edinburgh in the nineties but always thought Jenners would be Jenners. I do hope they still have the amazing massive Christmas tree from ground floor right up to the top floor! I’m sad to read angheluruju’s review xxx

Harvey Nichols - Edinburgh

30-34 St. Andrew Square, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 1AF

17-12-2008

maybe i’m spoiled as always shopped in the knightsbridge one before they opened in edinburgh … there’s really no comparison ! - however popped in yesterday to edinburgh hoping for some bargains but found nothing to entice me at all
- even spent ages in the food hall but not impressed by their own brand stuff
- however did speak to a very nice young man there - we had a nice discussion on the merits of the great selection of alcoholic drinks on offer :)
... NB don’t go if you’re looking for any bargains - which - given that the shop was deserted & staff outnumbered customers about 5/1 on the ground floor at any rate - was quite surprising
- handy for both rail/bus stations at east end of princes street

All Saints - Glasgow

192-196 Ingram Street, Glasgow, Scotland G1 1DG

21-11-2008

The Italian Centre - Glasgow

7 John Street, Glasgow, Scotland G1 1HP

20-11-2008

can you believe the UKs first versace store opened in glasgow ?
- well this is exactly where - together with armani and lots of little stylish boutiques
- so if its designer labels that turn you on … this is for you
- located in the city centre just to the south of george sq and east of the gallery of modern art
.... and alongside a couple of italian restaurants in what is called glasgow’s merchant city
- good spot if the weather is nice as there are outdoor tables in a piazza-like setting
- other shops in the area include jigsaw, agent provocateur, jaegar, all saints
- ideal place to go if you collect autographs of footballers and want to see some wags
- perfect for fashionistas
- open 7 days - parking restricted

The Catacombs of Calictus - Rome

Via Appia Antica 110/126, 00179 Roma

20-11-2008

these christian catacombs were only discovered in 1844 on the appian way - rome’s ancient road into the city - where the early christians lived, worshipped, died and were buried
- there are 60+ catacombs in total in subterranean areas on the outskirts of rome with thousands of tombs (no burials were allowed inside the city walls at this time)
- in the 4c these became shrines to the christian martyrs and centres for devotion and pilgrimage
- there is a labyrinth of tunnels covering many miles - like corridors with shelving running along either side having a niche cut into the stonework - each just big enough to take a corpse wrapped simply in a shroud
... it reminded me of being in a submarine with bunk beds along each wall and a narrow walkway inbetween
- sometimes they are carved with names or initials of the occupant/family and sometimes with a drawing of a fish which was the early christian symbol
- closed wednesdays (plus couple of weeks in winter for restoration)
- opening hours 9:00 - 12:00 & 14:00 - 17.00
(not recommended for the claustrophobic - but nice and cool in hot summer)

San Giovanni in Laterano - Rome

Piazza di San Giovanni in Laterano, Latium, 00184 Roma

20-11-2008

the basilica of san giovanni in laterano is rome’s cathedral and the seat of the bishop of rome
its official name translates as 'basilica of the Most Holy Saviour, St. John Baptist & St. John the Evangelist
- the original buildings on the site were erected by emperor constantine early 4c and this was the focal point of christian life in rome
... however there have been various reincarnations over the years due to destruction by fire and earthquake - most of the present structure was built between the 17/18c
- the basilica contains frescos by giotto / bronze doors from the senate at the imperial forum / the altar of the holy sacrament contains what is said to be the cedar table used at the last supper
the crypt is the final resting place of 6 previous popes (bishops of rome)
open daily 07.00 - 18.00 - metro station nearby

The Argyll Arcade - Glasgow

50 Argyll arcade, Glasgow, Scotland G2 8BG

20-11-2008

the argyll arcade links the buchanan street shopping precinct with argyle street in glasgow city centre
- it is the retail jewellery centre of glasgow and as you walk through it is completely dazzling as the bright lights bounce off the beautiful diamonds glistening in every window
- its often full of courting couples window shopping and especially at christmas there are many girls strolling through looking for items to put on their christmas wish list
- some of the shops specialise in antique/second hand jewellery
- its a good place to go in winter … get out of the wind & rain and banish any possible SAD symptoms
- checkout the latest designs in watches (before they disappear completely) - apparently less people wear a watch now and rely on their mobile phone

Abbotsford House - Melrose

Melrose, Scotland TD6 9BQ

20-11-2008

abbotsford is the house built and lived in by sir walter scott in a peaceful setting on the banks of the river tweed in the scottish borders
- the 19c scottish novelist is perhaps best known as author of classics such as the waverley novels, rob roy, ivanhoe, however he also researched and wrote an extensive biography on napoleon and is credited with writing the words which became schubert’s 'ave maria’
- most of his literary works were written at the desk in the ground floor study which he personally designed
- sir walter was an avid collector and on display you can see many items of great historical significance to scotland including rob roy’s sporran/purse, gun & broadsword, a lock of bonnie prince charlie’s hair, a tumbler belonging to scott’s hero robert burns (they met in edinburgh when scott was aged about 12)
- his library contains around 10,000 books which are still being catalogued 200 years after his death
- sir walter is credited with finding the secret location of the scottish crown jewels in edinburgh castle
- his picture appears on all bank of scotland notes as he was instrumental in the right of scottish banks retaining the right to print notes at a time when the uk government seeked to prevent this
- sir walter was instrumental in scots having the right to wear tartan - which was banned following the jacobite uprising - but scott became a favourite of king george IV and persuaded him to lift the ban
- there is a beautifull walled garden and grounds running down to the river, and woodland walks which contain many trees planted personally by sir walter and checked avidly against his cane to ensure healthy growth
- terrific place for a summer picnic
