A great place – visited here many times in the last 4-5 years and always had good food.
One minor problem with the restaurant is it’s inconsistency. Sometimes the food is fantastic – other times the food is very good.. either way you would go home happy but if only it would also be at it’s best! :)
I really like the staff in this place. They are casual but always helpful, fun and take care of you. I would imagine the style wouldn’t suit everyone but I think it really works.
The only other negative is the whole restaurant feels like it could do with a little refresh: bit of paint, new menus etc… that’s the only reason I would give it 4/5 instead of 5/5
Pricing is decent, around £5/6 for each dish. AS some other reviewers stated: the food isn’t ground breaking but it has all the classic dishes all very well put together.
Edit: 3 Sep 2011, they now have nice new menus and have added a few new things – therefore it gets the fifth star!
Amigos - Highbury

Amigos has potential to be really good. I've visited three times but i'm very unlikely to visit again.
The first time was really nice – little bit too spicy but definitely a good find and a welcome addition to the area.
The second time was bad (for the reason to follow) and I only gave it one more chance thinking that this was a slip up. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have been the case.
The problem with Amigos, is there seems to be little idea of how hot a chili is! You can detect really good flavours in the food – but for some reason they have the idea that everything has to be covered in chilis.. they use stupid amounts.
I'm not a lover of super-hot food, but I like spicy food. But the food from the last visit was inedible (I ate 2.5 forks worth), just a dish of chilis.. even after asking for 'mild', based on the assumption that this would still be hot.
As I say, the food from what it's possible to taste is really great... such a shame they have the idea that Mexican food is all about the heat :(
The Texas Embassy Cantina - Charing Cross
1 Cockspur Street, London SW1Y 5DL

OK food and drink although very expensive for the quality.
This would be half-forgivable if there was a single smile from a member of staff though.
I have a feeling the staff are paid in used tissues: sulky, impatient, rude and with a nasty habit of throwing dishes of food on to the table. Avoid!
The Bermondsey Square Hotel - Bermondsey
Tower Bridge Road, London SE1 3UN

Very nice new hotel – the staff are very friendly and the rooms although nothing outstanding are comfortable and clean. The huge shower is particularly fantastic.
Some really good local places so location is very good.
The main problem with the room was the entertainment system – for some reason they have an imac. Pretty cool you would think but in reality it's like a TV except no where near as good (horrible controls, limited information screens and poor to navigate).
Odeon Cinema - Holloway
419-427 Holloway Road, Holloway, London N7 6LJ

Dirty, smells and in urgent need of refurbishment.
Wish it was better because it's a short walk away from home but I prefer to travel an extra 20 minutes to avoid this one (says it all)
Sainsburys - Holloway

Fantastic that this part of the world doesn't have to suffer from having the horrendous Tesco as the only late night supermarket.
As another reviewer mentioned the staff in this place are amazingly helpful – it could be the honeymoon period but I hope it continues because it's a solid local supermarket
Sacred Cafe - Holloway
8 Hornsey St, Holloway, London N7 8EG

Pretty decent coffee – although not as good as Sacred would like to think.
Food has taken a serious nose-dive though. it was always good but recently you get the sense that whoever's in the kitchen couldn't care any less.
The scrambled eggs with feta cheese is a very nice dish but i've taken to making them at home; if the chefs ever work out that serving eggs on a freezing plate isn't a good idea I might go back...
iShake - Holloway
221 Holloway Road, London N7 8HG

When this opened I wasn't sure how long it would be around... Mid Holloway Road doesn't seem the ideal location for a late night milkshake bar...
Thankfully though there seems to be a lot more people paying a visit recently... which is good because they make some fine milkshakes!
I've only tried two shakes so far but the menu looks pretty good for return visits
Indian Ocean Tandoori - Holloway

After walking past this place for many years it was one of the first on my new list of 'finding out exactly what's on offer on my doorstep'
Overall this is a pretty decent find. We went mid week when this restaurant is not particular busy (the atmosphere & lack of diners would be my main problem with this restaurant).
We ordered curries and the dishes were extremely tasty, very well balanced in flavours and spice. Special mention has to go too to the egg fried rice side and the naan breads (with tomatos in there – could have just eaten those).
If I had to criticise the food in any way it could have been a little bit hotter (in temperature), it arrived on the table at 'ready to eat' heat which is OK for fast food but not for a restaurant.
Like the reviewer above i wan't sure if this is a 3 or 4 stars but i'm going to go the other way and give this a 'fair' four :)
Abeno Too - Covent Garden

Been here a lot of times and haven't tried anything other than the okonomiyaki. But then again... when they taste that good! :) Great food and really nice atmosphere. Most of the cooks (the food is made at the table) are really good – they will explain what they are doing if you ask. One or two occasions they haven't been as good but I think they were new.
It is a little squashed sometimes – if you're sitting at the main bar you'll likely to be sharing your elbow space with someone else, but it's all part of the charm – the people you'll be sharing the space will be just as happy with their choice of food as you, so the atmosphere overall is really nice.
The quality is easily comparable to the best okonomiyaki you would find in Japan. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is I always feel the prices are a little too high for what is essentially a simple dish. Still, absolutely delicious though!
