Gemäldegalerie - Tiergarten

Matthäikirchplatz, 10785 Berlin

30-09-2008

A wonderful and not too crowded art museum. I had only a very limited time to visit the museum, so I had to restrict my visit only to the Netherlandish and German painting till the sixteenth century: the collection is very impressive. Jan Van Eyck and Brueghel, Hans Baldung Grien and Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein and Petrus Christus. A free audio-guide provides additional information without being disturbing.

Schwules Museum - Kreuzberg

Mehringdamm 61, 10961 Berlin

The museum is definitely worth visit if you are interested in gay history. In this small museum you can see the history of gay people in Germany: soldiers and artists, activists and publishers, drag queens and nazi’s, poets and painters, victims and persecutors. Documents and photographs on display trace more than two hundred years of history.

Di Licata - Hamont-Achel

Generaal Dempseylaan 16, 3930 Hamont-Achel

Pizza Di Licata is well known far beyond our village. In fact, in summer 2007 the Radio 2 reporter Michaël Janart recommended Di Licata: http://multiblog.vrt.be/r2westvlaanderen/page/2/ and I can only second his opinion!

Achelse Kluis - Hamont-Achel

De Kluis 1, 3930 Hamont-Achel

Achelse Kluis (“the hermitage of Achel” - Dutch). located on the Dutch-Belgian border, is a cistercian monastery originating from a late-seventeenth century hermitage. After the French Revolution, the hermitage was reformed by the Trappist monks from the abbey of Westmalle, who founded here a cistercian convent, dedicated to St. Benedict. Together with the new Trappist regulations the brothers from Westmalle brought another tradition, namely, brewing beer. The brewery exists today making Achel one of the few beers allowed to use the name of “trappist”. In fact, the blond Achel is unique even among the trappist beers. Visit the Kluis to discover why ;-)

In addition to spiritual activities and beer, visitors of the Kluis can enjoy the wonderful nature surrounding the monastery. Well-paved cycling lanes make this area a true paradise for cyclists and hikers.
