Wilkinson's - York
York, North Yorkshire YO30 4XZ
31-01-2009
This is one of the biggest Wilkinson’s I have ever seen. It is on the Clifton Moor shopping estate so has a massive car park which makes it easy if you buy anything heavy to get to your car. The shop has everything you could want, toiletries, house hold goods, gardens stuff, furniture, toys, stationary, the list is endless. They have some of the items out fo the Wilkinson’s extra range. There is quite a large perfume counter as well. The shop even has a cafe with in it, the food is a little on the expensive side and a bit hit and miss. The first time I had the most delicious chips ever, the next time they were awful! My main complaint about the shop is the loud awful music they play, makes it difficult to spend too long in there.
Driffield Fruit Centre - Driffield
60a Middle St South, Driffield YO25 6PH
30-01-2009
Driffield Fruit Centre is more than a fruit shop, it is a fruit, vegetable, flower and bits and pieces shop all rolled in to one shop!! It looks like a small shop from the front but it goes back for what seems like ever!! The front of the shop is used to display some of their gorgeous flowers, they often have some quite unusual things. The fruit range is extensive with some unusual things in there amongst your common or garden fruit. They also sell a lot of dried fruits and nuts. At the back is the floristy part with loads more flowers and plants. They also have freezers with some quite good food offers.
P D S A - Scarborough

PDSA is one of the charities I like to support the most and I always try to pop in the charity shop when I’m in town. It is quite a small shop but is well placed on the main shopping street. They use the space well, with lots packed in. They sell quite a lot of new gifts, especially around christmas time. It is worth popping in in the new year to see what they are selling off. Their christmas card range is very nice and I love the celebrity pet calenders they do. PDSA is one of the more reasonable priced charity shops, some of them seem to ask a lot more now then they used to.
Thomas The Baker - Scarborough
7 Aberdeen Walk, Scarborough, North Yorkshire YO11 1BA
30-01-2009
Thomas the Bakers is a tiny little bakery but it is in the perfect place in the heart of the town centre. It is on the crossroad of the main street in the town centre. The queue can be very long at times but does seem to move quickly so you don’t generally end up waiting to long. I love their ciabatta buns which you can buy in bags of 2 or 4, they are so lovely and soft on the inside and slightly crusty on the outside. Thomas’ sell the traditional bakery range – sandwiches (try the delicious roast beef and onion ciabatta) hot pastry items and lots of lovely cakes and buns.
Salisbury Stores - Scarborough
65 Seamer Road, Scarborough, North Yorkshire YO12 4EF
30-01-2009
Salisbury stores is a bit of a jack of all trades store. It has everything you would expect of your local corner shop – newspapers and magazines, sweets for the kiddies including penny mixes (although they probably are more than a penny now a days!). They also have quite a good range of household stuff and food and they regularly have some really good offers on the go. There is a very extensive alcohol range, with many bottles of wine on offer. As well as this they have a very good range of computer products – ink cartridges and Cds/DVDs at very cheap prices. They even have a small range of hot foods available during the week and a selection of cold sandwiches.
Greens Furniture World - Malton
Newgate, Malton, North Yorkshire YO17 7LF
30-01-2009
I was told about Greens by a friend who bought a suite there and had it delivered about 20 miles at reasonable price. She told me it had loads of stuff but I could only think of a small shop. We went through the door and the furniture began and on it went, up and down stairs through doors into one bit after another. You could literally lose yourself in the shop. The choice was amazing lots of different sizes and colours etc. There was loads of stuff at fantastic prices. We just wished we had loads of room and money! They have a small car park round the back so easy to load your car up.
J H Wherritt - Scarborough
5 Eastborough, Scarborough, North Yorkshire YO11 1NG
30-01-2009
J H Wherritt is a small shop but it is packed full of many different things. There is literally not an inch of spare wall or display space to be seen in there. They sell quite a nice range of jewellery and they are one of the best places in town for buying necklace chains, they sell them in many different lengths and styles. They have a massive selection of ornaments, from Disney to Pendelfin to those bears that pretend to be cute but are saying nasty things. (can’t think of the name of them!!!) I love looking in the window at the revolving displays and all the lovely ornaments. When I was looking for a 21st themed present I found the perfect picture frame in there after having scoured virtually every other shop in town!!! There is bound to be something in there for everyone.
Boyes Department Store - Malton
Finkle Street, Malton, North Yorkshire YO17 7JD
30-01-2009
Boyes have a number of shops in the North and are an old family firm. The one in Malton is in a handy position but the shop is not one of it’s best. There are steps to the entrance, but there may be disabled access somewhere.People tend to congregate in the entrance and just inside. Once you have negotiated all this there is a lot on offer and bargains to be had. They have clothes, sometomes they have big name stuff especially sportswear. There is household ,gifts diy and furnishings. They sell toys ,sweets, stationary including kids stuff. The haberdashery department is very usefull and you can buy e,astic ,tape etc.by the metre. They often have things lke an “household event” where there will be special offers.
Duncombe Park Shop - Helmsley
15 Bridge Street, York, North Yorkshire YO62 5BG
29-01-2009
As it is connected with the Duncombe park estate it is perhaps no surprise that there are some up market (and some pricey) gifts. They are good quality and if want to buy a lasting and special gift it is a good place to try. I love to go in before Christmas and see the lovely things they have. There are some beautiful decorations and will come out year after year without looking tawdry and tired. I feel a bit sorry for parents as there are very tempting items within reach. It is the sort of place for a peacefull browse and maybe to give yourself a special treat.
Nice Things - Helmsley
10 Market Place, York, North Yorkshire YO62 5BL
29-01-2009
This shop is in the historic market place. It has a cafe on the ground floor with a good menu and an icecream cabinet as you go in. There is a gift shop on the top floor. I went in once whilst waiting to go somewhere on the bus.I saw a vase with delicate but fragile flowers added to it with filigree wire. i bought it to give as a gift but it was only wrapped in flimsy paper. I paid and asked if i could collect it in the afternonn after the bus tirp. The woman was horrilble ,she launched into a sort of tirade about the stock she had to sort etc. and said I couldn’t possilbly expect her to look after it. I took it with me but she spoiled my day and I haven’t been back since. This is bad service in a town which relies quite a bit on tourism.I hope they have someone more pleasant now as this was a few years ago and they do stock some nice stuff (and good icecream)
