The Abinger Hatch - Abinger Common

Abinger Lane, Dorking, Surrey RH5 6HZ

23-11-2008

Had a very nice pint of ale here, by the fire after a cold walk in the beautiful woods around this amiable pub in the North Downs. Good choice of cider. Friendly barkeep and locals, lovely old traditional building near the Mole Valley’s White Downs. Beamy with solid comfortable wooden tables, a maze of connecting levels and rooms. A good country pub for a pint and a crossword by a nice fire, did I mention the fire??, after a walk in the woods.

Jubilee Arts & Crafts Market - Covent Garden

Covent Garden, Covent Garden, London WC2E 8RB

23-11-2008

Good place for purchasing unusual gifts from even more unusual stall holders. Most of the goods on sale here are handmade, often by the person selling it to you. So don’t be surprised if you get a rude response to any attemps at haggling, they’re not bulk buying the stuff and they don’t like it. Good for costume jewellery, scarfs, wooden toys and games, and even hand printed ties.
The decor could definatly do with improvment and looks decidedly dingy compared to the well lit and decorated Apple Market, but there is some good stuff in there if you get past some of tattier stalls that have crept in, in recent years.
Weekends only.

Coach & Horses - Covent Garden

42 Wellington Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7BD

23-11-2008

Traditional (not a plasticated) Irish pub with a surprisingly 'local’ feeling for this part of the world. Handy for theatres, the opera and a short walk from the piazza and the markets. Used to have the best Guinness in town (had Liffey Guinness from Dublin imported, but they all do now).
Plenty of interesting characters frequent this place (some a bit too 'interesting’ for comfort). A good mix of Londoners, theatre goers and not too many tourists.

Lamb and Flag - Covent Garden

33 Rose Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9EA

23-11-2008

Lovely ancient pub hidden down a back alley in Covent Garden.
Narrow, cramped and busy in the way an old pub should be. Good for taking future wives on first dates and after work drinks with colleagues.

Seamus - Teddington

London TW11 0BS

Big, orange, American. What’s not to like about this local landmark.
Soft to the touch, for about 30 seconds, after which you take your life in your own hands to continue. Simply leave for 5 minutes and repeat. Don’t touch the under carriage no matter how temping. It’s a deadly trap.
Kind to mice and stray cats alike.

Builders Arms - Teddington

Field Lane, London TW11 9AS

Good little local pub in Tedders. Near the High Street, but very different from the corporate and trendy pubs and bars there. This is a local pub for local people (and anyone who’s passing by), but they won’t stare at you too much. Good for a swift half at lunch time when I should be else where. Haven’t had the food since new managment, so can’t comment on that score. Heard that they haven’t ruined the place, so I assume your feet still stick to the carpet in heavy rain. Overall a great little place. (ignore my staring locals and sticky feet comments. Really. Go and have a pint and a chat to a 'local’.)

Bushy Park - Kingston upon Thames

London KT1 4BA

22-11-2008

Possibly the most beautiful of Londons royal parks and my certainly my favourite. No longer my 'front garden’, I miss being able to pop over there for a walk, bike ride, game of footie or losing my rugby ball in a tree, when ever I want.
Pros? Where to start? The deer, red and fallow, always interesting to watch, even after 30 years, but especially during 'the Rut’ from September onwards, when you can hear the primeval sounding red deer stags bellowing and guarding their harems. Too much other wildlife to mention. Good for twitchers though.
The Chestnut avenue and Diana fountain laid out by Wren is beautiful in May when flowering (See before they succumb to various cankers and bugs).
The woodland gardens are wonderful too. A more managed area of flowers (lots of Rhodies) and ponds (swans, interesting ducks) seperated from munching deer. (They eat the flowers, not the ducks).
Cons? None but but dogs and owners who bother the deer and wind me up, especially on bank holidays. Leave the deer alone, their not pets. I better stop now.

The White Hart - Pirbright

The Green, Woking, Surrey GU24 0LP

21-11-2008

Great pub over looking the green in Pirbright, a very pretty village near Woking. Good food and choice of ales. Also some nice ciders for them that like that sort of thing (the wifey). Don’t know about the lagers. Didn’t look. Low ceilinged and sprawling, it has a good ambience. Seems resonable busy when I’ve been, but never too over crowded. Smallish beer garden which doesn’t over look the green unfortunately, but it is next to quite a busy road, so would be a bit noisy.
Worth a trip.

Crown Hotel - Chertsey

7 London Street, Chertsey, Surrey KT16 8AP

21-11-2008

Beautiful old building in the heart of Chertsey, this pub has recently been refurbished. Good choice of lagers if that’s your bag, but not great for ales or ciders. Bit pricey too. New decor looks expensive so guess that’s where the beer money’s been invested. Worth a gander for the ambience. Busy Friday nights with a surprisingly young and professional looking crowd for Chertsey. Haven’t tried the hotel bit, so can’t comment there.

The White swan - Twickenham

Riverside, London TW1 3DN

21-11-2008

Great location for this rugby themed pub in Twickers. Don’t worry though, this is no sports bar, but a characterful old pub on the river with some memorabilia stuck on the walls. The terrace is right on the river and is therefore very busy on summer Sundays and friday nights, but be warned the down stairs loo can be flooded at high tides. OK food and reasonable beer, it’s the really the location that brings people here. Busy on match days too.
