Athenaeum Hotel - London

116 Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 7BJ

18-11-2008 (updated on 16-04-2009)

I’m not one to frequent 5* hotels, but this is where my husband and I chose for our wedding night, because we liked the look of the traditionally English rooms and lounge area (which were as good in real life). It was such a perfect hotel experience. On finding out that it was our wedding day, the hotel upgraded us from a standard room to a suite, and gave us complimentary champagne on ice and a congratulations card. In the morning we had breakfast wheeled into our room on silver trays. We visited the bar/lounge area later and had a wonderful pot of tea with butter biscuits while reading the day’s newspapers. Fantastic!

Cafe El Paso - Dulwich

127 Lordship Lane, Dulwich, London SE22 8HU

19-11-2008

This place only gets 3 stars because although the meals and large and filling, they are not the best quality Mexican food in the world. However, I would give the plave 5 stars for effort in it’s decor and Mexican enthusiasm! From the outside it looks like a Mexican ranch and inside the walls are covered with painted muriels of cowgirls and all such like. There are verious sized mexican hats that can be picked up and worn by customers (yes, I have done this) which make it a very fun place to eat! They also serve pretty good, albeit expensive, cocktails, which cover the same area of menu as the food - so no lack of drinking choice!

Hong Kong City Restaurant - New Cross

43 New Cross Road, New Cross, London SE14 5DS

18-11-2008

Hong Kong city is a large Chinese restaurant on the Old Kent Road. It has limited parking outside. The set menus are excellent with a not-too-long menu for individual dishes and the food really is very good, especially their 'sizzling’ dishes.

Some nights (every Friday?) you will be treated to Paul 'Elvis’ Chan, who does renditions of the king, singing to you at the table and often inviting patrons to join in karaoke style. So bad it’s brilliant, we were in fits of laughter. The perfect Friday-night-meal-with-your-mates venue.

Ginseng Noodle - Camberwell

4 Coldharbour Lane, London SE5 9PR

19-11-2008

Cheap and cheerful, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get noodles here rather than anywhere else! There is a lot of choice, and food always comes hot and seemingly freshly made which is a bonus, and it’s cheap as chips. The staff are friendly, and they do take-away which I have taken advantage of many times. There is a good view of Camberwell as you sit and eat your noodles next to the big windows.

Bar Story - Peckham

Railway Arches Blenheim Grove, Peckham, London SE15 4QL

18-11-2008

This is a great little tucked away bar, underneath the railway arches of Peckham Rye Station, and boasts a huge choice of cocktails. They have a two-for-one happy hour which is worth taking advantage of. They have a lot of DJs visit, and is a popular venue for listening to new musical talent (they use the back garden area for small private gigs), although this is occasionally disrupted by trains rattling overhead. A unique and interesting place.

Uplands Tavern - Peckham

90 Crystal Palace Road, Dulwich, London SE22 9EY

18-11-2008

This is a really nice place, if not a bit pricey. They do good food, and the place is always well-organised and pleasant to be in. They decorate it very nicely at Christmas too. The food is good, with a good range of options, although I’m tempted to say that it is the food rather than the drinks that are overpriced. Apparently the rooms that they let out above are of a good quality and not too expensive for the area. It’s located on a nice, quiet corner of East Dulwich, so sitting outside in the summer is a pleasant option.

Peckham Multiplex - Peckham

95a Rye Lane, London SE15 4ST

18-11-2008

Not the fanciest of cinemas but it does the job. Visitors get the true 'peckham experience’ at this cinema, so be prepared to witness full-blown participation in the film, complete with screams and tutting and exclamations of suprise! Not one for a quiet romantic night out, but a great experience none-the-less. And it’s much cheaper than most, although avoid the toilets, as they are not the best kept loos in London/

Gourmet Burger Kitchen - Dulwich

121 Lordship Lane, East Dulwich, London SE22 8HU

18-11-2008

If you like burgers, you cant go wrong with this place. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you need to order sides to fill you up - you wont need them! Truly a feat of engineering, these burgers are certainly gourmet. My personal fave is the chicken with brie and cranberry sauce burger - yum! It is pretty difficult making a choice from their foot-long menu of burger options. Great for a novelty meal out with friends, and they do take-away too.

Il Giardino - Peckham

7 Blenheim Grove, Peckham, London SE15 4QS

18-11-2008

You could easily walk past this and not notice it but don’t because it’s great! The place is very cosy and you’re often squashed in a bit, but excellent Sicilian food is served here, especially the seafood, which is a bit unexpected for Peckham! They also have a special board with ever-changing, tempting choices. The prices are very reasonable too, and the service is very good. A very hidden gem of a place.

PizzaExpress - Dulwich

94 Dulwich Village, Dulwich, London SE21 7AQ

18-11-2008

As much as I love the food of Pizza Express, don’t visit this restaurant until at least 9pm, otherwise you will find yourself completely surrounded on all corners by couples with young rowdy children. Having said that, after 9pm it’s a lovely place to eat, with really good service and a nice atmosphere. Booking is probably a good idea as this is a busy area. Don’t overlook the pasta options on the menu, they are as good, if not better than, the pizza.
