The Gun Public House - Docklands

27 Coldharbour, Docklands, London E14 9NS

08-04-2013

This is a nice enough pub with pretentions. The restaurant were particularly unfriendly when we arrived and, while the food was good and the beer was OK I like to think I'm welcome in a venue and I didn't feel that here. The other clients were of the stuffed shirt variety and while the pub itself is nice enough I wouldn't go out of my way for surly service.

The Mermaid - St. Albans

98 Hatfield Road, St. Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 4JE

03-01-2013

The Mermaid has a fantastic open mic night on a Wednesday, does some great real ale and even people that prefer cider can get the best pint. I would really recommend this place as somewhere to have a drink it's run by some really friendly people and supports some really good music.

Cantina Laredo - Covent Garden

10 Upper St. Martin's Lane, St. Martin's Courtyard, London WC2H 9FB

The guacamole prepared at the table is a bit of theatre but the result tasted fresh and was possibly the best I'd tasted before. I had a vegetable fajita which include a large assortment of vegetable which were all excellent together.
Service was attentive but not too in the face and while not cheap was great value for money and a pretty smart place to eat in central London.

Kimaya - St. Albans

This place has just opened and the “virgin” coctails were off the menu when we visited. They don’t offer alcohol either.

I was a bit worried that they wouldn’t do much for veggies when I first scanned the menu, the Sushi was all fish but they had all sorts of interesting veggie dishes some of which were marked as vegetarian and others that appeared to be veggie but weren’t marked.

I had some avocado maki rolls to start followed by tofu with sticky rice and curry sauce. It was all really good food and arrived quickly.

My friends ordered meat dishes all of which were approved of and I think we are going to find ourselves going there more often.

bluebus I’m going to mark down my review for this place. The second time we ate there the food took an hour to arrive and the restaurant slowly filled up with irritated takeaway customers who had ordered by phone.

Most recently I went in to be told the chef who did sushi was ill and they wouldn’t be able to do sushi. I left wondering why other places I eat manage not to have crises on every occasion I visit.

Jamie's Italian Kitchen - St. Albans

22 Chequers Street, St. Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 3YD

This is a well updated, casual restaurant and was a great venue to go out for a meal with friends. The waiting staff were friendly and helpful and the food arrived quickly. I had plenty of vegetarian options to choose from and the chicken dish looked like very good sized portions. Including drinks but no deserts we spent about £25 per head which was very reasonable.

Bankes Arms - Corfe Castle

East Street, Wareham, Dorset BH20 5ED

06-05-2012

This is a very characterful 15th Century Inn and the rooms are appropriately quirky. My single room wasn't en-suite but did have a shower. I was very pleased to find the hotel has free wifi for guests and the real ale in the bar was very well kept.

I had a nice starter and a butternut squash and goats cheese risotto in the restaurant and enjoyed the food very much.

As this Inn is right in the middle of Corfe it is ideal for exploring the beautiful castle which is just outside the pub and rises over the garden of the inn.

Souk Medina - Covent Garden

1A Shorts Gardens, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9AT

I had a nice vegetarian meal here, the place has a really nice atmosphere and looks fantastic inside. I liked the mint tea and baklava very much. I’m not sure if the belly dancing with painfully loud music is on every day but I made a rapid exit as soon as it started and would rather not have the floor show.

I thought it was an interesting and atmospheric place to eat and I hope I can remember to give it another try in the future.

Buongiorno Italia - St. Albans

St. Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 3XR

13-12-2011

More recently this great italian deli has expanded to add seating to allow you to sit inside and have one of their excellent sandwiches and a coffee. The vegetarian ciabatta I had included artichokes and blue cheese and olives. One thing to look out for is the “spicy” marinated olives, which are incredibly hot.

At Christmas they do a range of hampers which would be great emergency presents.

Delicious Tea Room - Bishop's Stortford

70 South Street, Bishop's Stortford, Essex CM23 3AZ

26-02-2011

I enjoyed eating here a lot. They showed me to my seat and were very conscientious about keeping people informed if it was worth waiting or if they should come back later.
I ordered a goats cheese quiche which came with potato salad and green leaves. It was delicious and the hot drinks were served in an eclectic mix of cups and saucers. I was even introduced to the lady who made the quiche as I was leaving.
I popped back on the way home for a cappuccino (nicely made with stylish coffee art on the top) and a slice of their home made coffee cake. They have a great selection of cakes and I would love to go back for some of the lime, coconut and pistachio cake.

All delivered with very enthusiastic and polite service.

Thai Square - St. Albans

27 George Street, St. Albans, Hertfordshire AL3 4ES

07-02-2010 (updated on 15-01-2011)

So many of the Thai restaurants appear to serve the same food but Thai Square food is definitely much superior to any other thai places I've eaten. The vegetarian options are varied and include a lot of tofu (which I love).
Sharing a starter is a good suggestion as I couldn't fit in the sweet sticky rice desert and I'll definitely be going back for that.
Very relaxed and quiet environment on a Sunday evening and a lovely environment to eat in.

bluebus Just a quick note about the wine. I've had a couple of bottles of wine in Thai Square, neither were great. The rioja was more pricey and definitely not a great drink. I'd suggest sticking to the beer, or the water.
