Pizza Express Restaurants - Cambridge

26-28 Regent Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire CB2 1DB

15-12-2011

I can never fault the food at Pizza Express and being a chain the only difference between different branches would be the service and location. This particular branch is well located. We popped in for a late lunch on a Sunday and were shown to a (slightly chilly) seat near the window by a rather surly staff member – I’m sure it had just been a long day. Our first course – rosemary bread – took a long time to arrive but the waiter took the trouble to explain to come over and explain that the chefs (who also looked quite bored and like they’d had a long day already) had burnt it so he’d sent it back on our behalf. The replacement starter and our mains arrived very swiftly after that and we were delighted when the waiter didn’t charge us for the starter due to the delay. We had the goats cheese pizza – always delicious – and a salad new to the menu with chicken and ham and all sorts. Both were delicious. All in all, I would probably recommend this branch for a quick bite – certainly other customers were served a full meal in less than an hour.

Anstruther Fish Bar - Anstruther

42-44 Shore Street, Anstruther, Scotland KY10 3AQ

17-02-2010

We were in St Andrews for the day en route to Aberdeenshire and when choosing a place to spend the night, Anstruther Fish Bar was right up there in the criteria. So, we stayed in Pittenweem (just a mere 5 minutes away in the car) and had dinner at the Fish Bar. It is, indeed, as good as they say. A good choice of fish - some even sustainable (and certified by the Marine STewardship Council) - and all looked delicious. The two that we tried were delicious and came with good, chunky chips and crispy batter. Yummy. Well worth the effort.
There is also a wee sweet and ice cream shop attached and we grabbed some strawberry bonbons for dessert! Excellent.

Pizza Express - Edinburgh

59/63 George IV Bridge, Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1RN

17-02-2010

A good addition to the Pizza Express family, this restaurant opened just in time for the Festival in 2009 in a new building on the corner of George IV Bridge and Victoria Street. The restaurant, being modern, is light and airy with a pleasant atmosphere. It tends to vary in busy-ness, being particularly busy over the weekends but not so busy at lunchtimes, making it a perfect choice for a quick but good quality lunch. Serving the usual Pizza Express fare - a good range of delicious pizzas and a smaller selection of pastas - the staff are friendly and atmosphere relaxed. In addition to the normal tables, there are some more comfortable seats further into the restaurant. Overall, a good location.

Indigo Yard - Edinburgh

7 Charlotte Lane, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 4QZ

17-02-2010

I'd heard a lot about Indigo Yard over the years but never managed to locate it. However, a friend who'd recently moved away wanted to meet there for lunch and so I made the effort (not inconsiderable - it's hidden away behind and next to Pizza Express). It's quite a delight, after all. The first part of the premises is very light and airy and modern, then there are a series of pillars separating a dining-focussed area which is slightly dark and cosy. The food - 2 for 1 on lots of main courses - is excellent. So much so that I went back and shared one of their platters with my husband - a good selection of deliciously unhealthy food including tempura prawns, breaded chicken, etc. Well worth going back for! So, well worth making the effort to find, not only for the food and friendly staff but for the atmosphere.

Blue Reef Aquarium - Newcastle

Grand Parade, Tynemouth, Newcastle upon tyne NE30 4JF

17-02-2010

A good little aquarium situated right on the coast at Tynemouth / Whitley Bay. No parking, but ample pay and display parking is available along the seafront a short walk away.
We visited on a weekday towards the end of term but, despite there being 3 separate school parties in, we found it to be quite a pleasant experience. There is a large selection of fish and an excellent otter display, as well as an outdoor tank in which seals can be seen. The main disappointment was the large tank, under which is a short walkway, as the walkway was a great deal shorter than I was expecting and it was full of children! Having been to Deep Sea World in NOrth Queensferry, I was disappointed. However, well worth a visit, especially if you have children, as they will love it.

Costa - Beaconsfield

Cardains House, Gregories Road, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire HP9 1HG

17-02-2010

A nice addition to the Costa franchise, this shop is located in what used to be a men's clothes shop in the centre of Beaconsfield New Town, and is very popular. It is large and spacious with a good selection of comfortable sofas, tables and stools, friendly staff and a good atmosphere. There is a large outdoor seating area, ideal for sipping one of the many cold drinks on offer during the warmer weather.
The shop is a BT wireless Openzone, making it a great place to wile away the hours, tucked up in a corner with a steaming hot chocolate, surfing the internet and watching the world go by.

Old Bengal Restaurant - Beaconsfield

15 Wycombe End, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire HP9 1LZ

17-02-2010

A lovely little family-run Indian restaurant located slightly off the road on Wycombe End, down the hill from the roundabout in Beaconsfield Old Town. The food is delicious with a wide range of traditional Indian dishes and the staff are attentive and friendly. I'm a korma girl and was pleased to note a range of creamy mild dishes on the menu, and the two I have tried did not disappoint. The prawn puri is especially nice. The premises are quite new, either purpose built or converted, and going upstairs to the toilets feels a little like trespassing in someone's house!
Overall, well worth a visit. If you go more than once, the staff may even remember you and strike up conversation, becoming firm lifelong friends!

L'Alba D'Oro - Edinburgh

7 Henderson Row, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 5DH

17-02-2010

Having lived in Edinburgh for many years, I thought there were no decent fish and chip shops in the city. Thankfully, I was wrong! L'Alba D'Oro does the best fish in the city and is well worth a visit if you're in the area. Unfortunately it's a little bit far for me so I have to rely on being in Stockbridge already! The fish is delicious, succulent, well cooked and with lovely crispy batter - just like the best chippies by the seaside but without the biting wind and salty hair!! There are some seats to eat in but the main emphasis is on take away.

Krispy Kreme - Paddington

Praed Street, Paddington, London W2 1NW

17-02-2010

I didn't realise that Krispy Kreme had a franchise at Paddington station but oh yes, they do. Fantastic for purchasing yummy donuts to eat on the train.
THis is quite a small branch with a few tables for sitting in, but with hardly any queue and a good selection of donuts what more can you want?!!
It's slightly out of the way - I only found it as we had a lot of time to kill and I was looking for Boots - hidden behind one of the escalators up to the food hall, but it's well worth finding.
The original glazed donuts are especially good :o)

National Sea Life Centre - Birmingham

3A Brindley Place, Brindley Place, Birmingham, West Midlands B1 2JB

17-02-2010

Others have noted the high prices at this Sea Life Centre. I was fortunate to be able to use Nectar points to get a voucher online, making it a very reasonable afternoon out!
I really enjoyed my visit - there is a great deal to see and the layout itself is interesting, with the path winding round various tanks and pools on the way up to the top. The main problem with the layout is that if you are wishing to see some of the talks / feeding displays, you have to go through the entire path - there is no way of nipping through to the relevant part, plus you then have to come back against the flow of people to see all the things you missed while rushing!
HIghlights for me included the seahorses - the best collection I've ever seen, amazing! - the otters - very cute - and the sea turtles swimming overhead.
I was disappointed by the 4D cinema experience, although the video was good and the 3D helped, I felt the 4D part was slightly superfluous, although it would be good for children. Personally I was poked in the back right on the shoulder blade which was very painful!! So be warned and sit straight in the seat... Overall, well worth a visit, especially if you can get an offer and not have to pay full price.
