If you’re going to bother going to a posh department store, Fortnum and Mason is the posh department store to go to. Whether I’m killing time in the neighbourhood, looking for fancy biscuits for my gran’s birthday or taking visiting family for afternoon tea, it’s always an impressive shop to look at, the staff are always lovely and something of an experience to visit. The presentation is always perfect, whether its a stack of perfumed soap or roasted garlic. It’s a shame tourists waste so much time wandering the crowded Harrod’s Food Halls when the could get more from glancing at the tea selection at Fortnum.

Every once in a blue moon when I’ve got a craving for ice cream and feel like treating myself, I take a timeout to go to the Parlour. It’s not quite as cheap as a 99 from the ice cream truck by the park, but splurging only costs about £12, which, if you’re only planning on ice cream, is cheaper than pretty much any other meal at Fortnum & Mason. Maybe their Knickerbocker glory tastes a little better for the presentation, but once in a while it’s nice to feel pampered.

I usually favour the East End bagels shops, mostly because they’re open 24 hours and generally fantastic, but there are times when I don’t really fancy the journey eastward.
On such days Happening more than does the trick. Their bagels are a bit bigger and a lot dense, but though they require a bit of extra effort chewing, they’re still nice and soft and always fresh. It’s hard to find a good bagel in London, but gosh darn it if the Happening doesn’t make a fine effort.

Kilburn is hardly the epicentre of cool, but it’s worth trekking north to go to the Luminaire. In addition to being a sweet little club with great sound, a really comfortable set up and cheap drinks, it’s just a generally good night out. It is very much geared towards the indie kids, but still a bit more laid back than a night out in Camden or Shoreditch. And their calendar is always packed, so it’s worth checking regularly for what bands are playing.

Magma is a treat for art geeks, design geeks, graphic novel geeks, pop culture geeks, and just geeks full stop. Sure, if you went to Forbidden Planet, you could get t-shirts, badges, graphic novels and action figures, but they wouldn’t have quite the same flair or edge. Plus they have just about every art and design magazine under the sun. The perfect place to find a little something for yourself or your artsy friends.
