Pre-refurb days, Kebab King was a bit of a joke amongst students, rumoured for its food-poisoning capabilities and generally horrible food. These appear to have been just that: nothing more than rumours, as the food I’ve eaten from Kebab King has always been of a good standard and never given me food poisoning (and I have a sensitive stomach). The guys behind the counter always seem to have a smile on their face - although it could just as well be a grimace at 3 in the morning - and you can always depend upon them for quick fatty snacks to soak up the alcohol in your belly.
A good solid takeaway which is really close to Owens Park and the bus stop…this surely has to be a plus.

Sofa has suffered a loss of business over the past few years, but 3 years ago it was one of the main port of calls for fresh-faced wide-eyed new students looking for a bar which incorporates decent drinks with the ultimate comfort factor of a sofa.
Sofa, then, is a fairly classily decorated little bar in the heart of Fallowfield and genuinely just a lot better than its rival Revolution just down the road. The staff here are really friendly and it’s fairly easy to get served due to the fact that most of the new students (the silly buggers) are queueing in the rain to get into Tarts or Revos.
The prices here are fairly reasonable with cocktails priced around £3.95 to £4.50, which are all the more cheaper if you have a yellow card (or one of those cards that are flogged to all the students on the first few days of their inaugural drinking). A must here is the signature cocktail, the Comfy Sofa which contains lychee juice and is just lovely.

Cheap watery beer, old crappy jukebox, knackered old pool tables, sticky floors, the perfect place for any self-respecting student!
I spent many an evening spent in here in first year, you can’t really go wrong for the first few months when it’s still the place to be. Goes downhill a bit after people realise there’s more to do outside of the campus but it’s still good for watching sport and the cheeky night “in”.

Seriously, this place is just great! I discovered this place during my first year of University and I’ve never looked back. I have to admit, I am heartened to note I have a Battered Cod even closer to me now in Withington, but the Battered Cod in Fallowfield will always be close to my heart.
Every time I have been there, the staff have always been very happy and polite, which is a really nice quality to see. The food is always great - the portions of fish are huge, and although it cost the best part of a tenner for 2 large fish and chip meals and some cokes, it’s less than I normally spend on a takeaway and I can never finish the meal as there’s so much food.
The service at the Battered Cod has always been great and quick, the food tastes as it should and it is better than its competitors. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up here; it’s good for a secret deep-fried treat once in a while.

Here’s a tip: do not order your fried chicken from Maisy’s. Although fried chicken in itself is a meal with which you should be supplied with defibrillator pads for resuscitation afterwards, I have to say that this takeway in particular is just one of the most awful I have ever eaten bar none.
After having waited almost two hours for our order, we phoned the restaurant to find out the problem. It turns out our order had 'not been received’ and that more food could be with us in 40 minutes’ time. We should have cancelled then and there, but food desperation and the knowledge that no other food at that point would reach us before the chicken did, we persevered with our rumbling stomachs.
The most annoying thing was that not only was the food of a disgustingly low quality, no apology or refund was issued, nor was any fast-track option for our forgotten food in the first place. Instead, our food arrived dripping with grease, missing many components, congealed and cold.
To sum up: absolutely disgusting. I’d rather stick with KFC.
