Oxford University Museum Of Natural History - Oxford

Parks Road, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 3PW

08-07-2008

There’s not too much to add the the reviews here already except this:

If your child is under 8 then don’t even bother to take them to the Natural History museum in London - come here first.

Why? Well NHM London is unbelieveably crowded these days, you seem to be in a slow moving line the entire visit and so it’s a very restrictive environment for young children. It’s still got the best collection - but they’ll appreciate these distinctions better when they’re older.

NHM Oxford is a much more suitable environment for smaller children: more freedom to move and to observe or interact. Many of the exhibits can be touched which is so great for little kids (many are very good replicas - but that’s fine for this age group).

My kids love it here - and I can relax and have fun with them.

alpha bar - Oxford

81 covered market, avenue three, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX1 3EE

I’m not a health food nut (sorry) but if there’s a picnic needed for a day out in Oxford, this is the only place to come. Whatever you opt to order - salad box (mixed salads in a box with toppings, mains, extras) or sandwiches (fresh artisan bread) - you won’t be hungry at the end.

You’ll have gone a long way towards your five a day without even noticing it too.

And you won’t break the bank here either: they even give student discounts on top of their very reasonable prices. This place will suit a vegetarian or vegan but offers meaty options too. The hallmark of it though is fresh, fabulous flavours and a lovely smug feeling after you’ve eaten.

clonea beach - Dungarvan

Dungarvan

This is what Ireland used to be all about: friendly locals, beautiful countryside and a nice sandy beach with a good Irish flavour about it. It’s not totally untouched and people do know about it: but not in droves and it still works for all that.

Find a B&B, camp nearby or rent a house. Then just relax and enjoy it. Bring a wetsuit if you want to be sure of a swim or some duck fat - (the local kids seem to get in whatever the weather). Go for a run along the coast road - bliss.. then pop down to Dungarvan town for a taste of Ireland at its best.

Place Jemaa el Fna - Marrakech

place Jemaa el Fna, Marrakech, Marrakesh

You’re going to find your way here, no two ways about it - if you’re in Marrakech then you’re sure to end-up in the big square (that’s what the local youth are calling it cos we make such a hash of pronouncing it). In the daytime it’s an important part of the market but at night… that’s when it’s special.

You’ll have to be there to even get a whiff of what everyone’s telling you. My only advice is get stuck in. Eat here (highly recommend table number 1) at least once - you’ll get badgered by every stall holder sure but it’s all good natured. Just tell them you’ve already eaten, walk round once then choose a stall and order away - cheaper than chips.

Riad El Fenn - Marrakech

DERB MOULLAY ABDULLAH BEN HEZZIAN, BAB EL KSOUR, Marrakech, Marrakesh

07-07-2008

Funky, stylish, chilled, luxurious, hippy chic place in the heart of the city. That shouldn’t be possible right? Luxury hippy? Still that’s what you get here. Didn’t stay here but the walk through to dine on the roof top was enough to make sure that I will when I go back.
Just writing this review has me sighing: warm spring evenings spent on the terrace with the best cocktails I’ve had for a long time after one of the best meals of my holiday. This Riad has such a sense of place - all the sights and sounds of Marrakech so close you can touch them - and a real sense of itself. Chill

Riad Noir d' Ivoire - Marrakech

Derb Jdid Bab Doukkala 31, 44000 Marrakech, Marrakesh

Sumptuous, luxurious and fantastic. Although you’re staying in the lap of luxury, the owners and staff here are wonderfully down to earth and chilled. That said, there isn’t anything that’s too much trouble (they seem to know what you want before you do).

Not cheap (especially the wonderful suites) but stay in their cheapest room and you still get treated like royalty and have the use of all the facilities- pool, gym, terrace, hammam…

And you might just get upgraded - I did; lovely, lovely Jill).

Really special.
