Jai Shri Krishna - Wood Green

10 Turnpike Lane, London N8 0PT

24-04-2010

Jai Shri Krishna is a south indian vegetarian restaurant with slightly nicer decor than most of the other formica tabled establishments along the road. You write down the items you want and take it up to the counter. They does good tasty snacks e.g. idli, mogo (cassava) wedges in spicy sauce but the best deals are to be had at lunch when a masala dosa (spicy potatoes in a crispy semolina pancake) will set you back just £2.99 and a thali £3.99. I found the dosa a bit thick and chewy but the thali was delicious and almost too much food to eat.

The Hoxton Pony - Shoreditch

104/108 Curtain Road, Shoreditch, London EC2A 3AH

Nice, cool laid back vibe. On alternate wednesdays they have 15 minutes slots where people can perform and the last band on were really good. Very extensive cocktail list(£7-9),mine was great, they even made it with a little pot of marmalade they keep behind the bar. Paddington would be happy here!

Monsieur M - Shoreditch

380 Old Street, London EC1V 9LT

This place is pan asian, meaning thai and vietnamese mostly. I had the corn cakes for sides, tasty but then it's hard to mess up deep fried stuff then thai beef curry for mains. The actual curry was ok but the few bits of beef were tough and chewy. If I was in the area looking for cheap thai, I'd probably head to yelo in hoxton square instead. My mango daquri also did not taste like it had any alcohol in it either.

Jetlag Sports Bar - Fitzrovia

125 Cleveland Street, Marylebone, London W1T 6QB

20-04-2010

Came as part of a qype event, premiere of new series of 30 Rock. I heart 30 rock, funniest show on TV for my money. If you haven't seen it yet do yourself a favour and watch, it will make your life infinately better and that's a promise!
Onto the bar itself, Jetlag may not look like much from the outside but prepare yourself for a pleasant surpise on entering and especially once you get downstairs. The screening room is super plush with comfy seats and it's own private bar so you don't have to mingle with the hoi polloi. Better than your living room, except that you can't loll around in your PJs' (well you could but you might get some funny looks on the way home!)
Yummy street food including spicy chicken wings, onion rings and potato wedges complete the picture. Yes there were a lot of deep fried things but frankly it tasted goood, who wants to snack on tofu!

Kuno Tierra - Soho

4 Regent Place, London W1B 5EA

I attended as part of a qype event and loved the place. Sleek, low lit with lots of candles and soothing music playing= instant haven. You can feel your stress melting away when you step in. I had the back massage which was just the right amount of pressure for me, you can tell the therapists are very experienced. I also had a mini facial, which was not quite as enjoyable, as it felt more like the therapist was dabbing the cleanser/ cream on. Personally I like a firmer touch but I accept that this may be my personal preference. However the products used were Elemis and they did not make my sensitive skin flare up at all. I would definately come back to Kuno Tierra for the massage and to try out their other services. Perfect location for a break from some hectic shopping!

If you've never had sugar cane juice this is the place to rectify that! Clean, small chain of juice stalls. Pure sugar cane juice with some ice and a squirt of kumqaat to cut the sweetness, mmn heaven!

co-op mart - Ho Chi Minh City

Cong Quynh, Ho Chi Minh City

You might not think that a super market is an obvious place to eat but you'd be wrong. Go up to the firts floor of any supermarket in Vietnam and there will normally be a littlle cafe. It's cleaner than the hawker stalls, the prices are cheap (in HCMC a plate cost about 25,000 VND) and there's normally a counter full of food so you can just point to whatever takes your fancy. Plus you can buy some water/ juice/ beer in the supermarket to go with your food. It's my top tip!

ancient house - Hoi An

Cua Dai Road 377, Hoi An

09-04-2010

Loved this place, all the extra touches make it feel really special, such as flowers on the beds, fruit in the rooms, cold towels when you come in. Amazing breakfasts too. I advise asking for an uper room as if you opt for a lower one your outside area is where everyone walks past. Also if you take the free shuttle bus to the beach the pool at the beach club is often less crowded than the main one at the hotel. US $70 per room per night

fantastic tours - Ho Chi Minh City

Bui Vien 82, Ho Chi Minh City

We did the one day tour of the mekong delta, it cost US $8 (a couple of dollars cheaper than the other places we went to). I thought the tour was pretty good A/C bus, english speaking guide. Did a short boat ride on the mekong, visted the islands and a candy making factory and listened to some tradional music. Don't forget to take some extra money for tips, also I would recommend getting the elephant ear fish, a speciality of the region. (around 130,000 VND) Much better than the very basic set lunch that was includedd in the tour price.

Beautiful carved stone temples, I would recommend taking a guide (it cost us about 3,500 rupees for 3 day tour from N. Goa). If you have time take a walk along the river, it's very pretty.
