Barrel Rolling at Grantchester
chuapeiying
last updated on 08-01-2009:
This event is great fun! It happens annually during boxing day, and you can see everyone still in the Christmas and holiday mood, and possible still drunk from Christmas Dinner!
The 4 main pubs each send teams to roll barrels (you guessed it!) down a street, while on-lookers cheer and laugh. But the actually rolling isn’t the only entertainment… some teams dress to a theme, such as with wigs or super-hero outfits.
Come down for a barrel of laughs!

The cathedral is lovely and quiet, a peaceful place to reflect. There are many beautiful pieces inside, and take your time to walk around and admire them slowly.
Also, at the back, there is a old wall displaying original roads from as early as 200 AD. Many people use this enclosure as a 'wishing well’ to toss coins into.

I was quite disappointed with this hotel. I stayed for 2 nights, and there were constantly problems.
In the first room they gave me, the bathroom door couldn’t be shut, so I requested for a change of rooms.
The second room was fine for the first night, but when I got back on the second night, my key-card wouldn’t work so I had to get it exchanged. Then, I found out that the bin was missing from my room, so I called reception to ask for one. They asked me to go and collect it myself, and thinking that they were too busy, I went down myself. Then I found that they were just sitting around and chatting.

This isn’t part of Explore @ Bristol, but it’s located right outside the building. It’s a bumper car ride, and there’s rarely a queue so you can just pay for as many rides as you want, and with at least one friend, just ride and bump away!

I’m not a huge fan of contemporary art, or even of art or museums for that matter, but I had so much fun just wandering around Arnolfini. It’s well-sized, unlike the huge galleries such as Tate Modern and the British Museum. The exhibits are interesting, and interactive, so that even an art-idiot such as myself can enjoy it!

Just went to La Tasca for lunch. The food there is decent, but not fantastic. The lunch menu of 5 tapas for 10 pounds (to be shared between 2 people) is a good deal, and reasonably satisfying, but definitely not excellent.
The calamari and meat balls were definitely the better dishes. But the paella was cold, hard, and not very tasty at all.
The restaurant was also quite cold and quiet, which is odd considering we were there at lunch hour.
Good for a quick lunch with a friend, but don’t expect excellent fare for the low prices.

The Ravens of the Tower of London

There is an old belief that the Tower of London will crumble to the ground if there are no ravens within the castle walls, and that the Crown of England will be lost.
Unbelievable as that may sound, the rulers still believe in this old superstition, and hence there is a law that there must be at least 10 ravens kept within the castle at all times. Their wings are clipped to prevent them from flying out.
But beware though, these birds may not be able to fly, but their sharp beaks can tear through flesh instantly. As our guide recounted his encounter with one of the big, black birds, I slowly inched away from the enclosure.

This is such a interesting for everyone to visit! Those interested in history can walk around and enjoy the castle sights, whilst the more carefree visitors can just listen to the stories told by the yore-men! Free guided tour conducted hourly, not to be missed!
Note of caution though, the place is huge and so requires at least 3 hours to explore fully.

great place to get fresh produce, but very noisy! also check out the wine sellers outside on weekends, they come from their own farms and sell home-made wine.

Lovely and lively coffee/chocolate spot, one of the many along Lygon Street. This one stands out as being Latin-America based, with strong flavours. Try the chilli-chocolate for an unforgettable experience!
