Rising Sun - London

29 High Street, Hampton Hill, London TW12 1NB

Great pub in Hampton Hill. We pop in regularly for a swift drink on a Friday evening. The staff are all extremely friendly. We've not yet sampled the food but the menu looks appetising. Definitely one of the better pubs in the area.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard - Portsmouth

Victory Gate, HM Naval Base, Portsmouth PO1 3LJ

20-11-2012

An excellent day out, the dockyard has many different displays (some ship-based, some not) with lots of interesting stuff for all ages. All-in tickets may seem quite expensive, but when you factor in everything there is to see they are not too bad, and they are valid for a year. This is a good thing too, as there is much more to see than can be squeezed into one day. I believe that you can currently use vouchers from a well-known supermarket loyalty scheme to obtain discount tickets as well, which may give considerable savings if you can plan ahead.

HMS Victory and Warrior are a must, it's great to be able to walk around and see how ships were run (and fought) from two eras. The Mary Rose itself is currently not open, whilst a fantastic-looking new pavilion is built around the remains of the hull - due to open in early 2013. There is still an exhibition though, with lots of information and interactive things to keep anyone with even a passing interest in history happy. The boat trip around the harbour is also very informative, with the commentary covering details of just about every ship old and new moored within sight at the time.

There are various catering options, including a cavernous restaurant (we visited in November, I assume it gets extremely busy in the summer), a tea-room and a coffee bar. Plenty of space for a picnic too, although being a dockyard don't expect grass to sit on!

Car parking is not on-site, and the "official" car park nearby is quite expensive. Cheaper options not much further away may be available, worth checking.

All in all a very enjoyable day out, and we'll be going back when the Mary Rose reopens next year.

Excellent Easter Sunday family lunch at the Stork Inn. A varied menu, and the selection of meals we had were great with big portions. The sweets, bar the “mini Pavlova” which my wife said tasted like tinned fruit on a shop-bought meringue nest (hence -1 star), were tasty. The staff ate extremely friendly and the pub has a great atmosphere. There is also a playroom for the kids at one end if the pub, great for damp days when the outdoor playground is too wet. Folks wanting a quiter meal can sit at the other end of the pub away from the kids.

TaP Plumbing & Heating - Hampton Hill

We used this husband and wife team to install a dishwasher in our small kitchen, and to help fix our central heating pump when it failed during a severe cold snap. On both occasions they were friendly, helpful and efficient and did the work for a reasonable price. We would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a good plumber.

The Park Avenue is a great hotel. I stay there regularly on business. The rooms are spacious, well decorated and clean, with large comfortable beds and excellent en suite bathrooms. The food is always good (especially the breakfasts) and the staff are excellent, very friendly and always helpful. There’s are a good selection of meeting/conference rooms, with good service. I would especially recommend the tea and scones for meeting refreshments!

Busy but great cafe. Service is always friendly and quick, given the army of staff behind the counter! Their veggie falafel wrap is a favorite I always go back for. A very filling and reasonably priced lunch.

Great little cafe, friendly service and good food at good prices for Kingston. Their garlic chicken wraps are fantastic!

Borders in Kingston has been closed for some time. Now a Next, with a Starbucks cafe inside. The usual fare, nothing amazing. There are many (better IMHO) alternative cafes in Kingston. This one only stood out when you could read a Borders book with your coffee!

Excellent cafe right on the main road through Teddington. Huge sandwich selection, great paninis and their pastas are fantastic value, and can be bought to eat in or take away. Oh, and the cakes! They also do all the usual cafe favorites too. Gets busy at lunchtime but service is still swift and friendly. One of my favorite cafes in the area.
