Fat Cat Cafe - Stoke Newington
119 Stoke Newington Church Street, Stoke Newington, London N16 0UD
30-05-2011
Very nice spot for relaxed, informal, unhurried and unpretentious breakfast with lovingly prepared food. I ordered the veggie breakfast, large capuccino, fruit juice and another cap and the whole bill was less than £13. Other treats on the menu include eggs benedict and American-style pancakes. And for late risers (or those who prefer meals in New York time), they serve a proper breakfast all day!
Dalston Superstore - Dalston
117 Kingsland High Street, Dalston, London E8 2PB

(updated on 29-04-2011)
A bit of the old East Village vibe transplanted in Dalston - London's own version of Deee-Lite :) Friendly bar staff and Kirin on draft (at least at end of March). Enjoy now because brewery in Sendai was damaged in earthquake and tsunami. By day, the Superstore is a cafe and art gallery; had a late breakfast recently - yummy french toast with bread of substance.
Superstore isn't just a DJ bar - they also feature artwork and recently hosted the FRINGE Gay Film festival. In my book, that's a community commitment and not just a profit-making venture.
But mostly it's about the music - and the Superstore is featuring very fine DJs and has a superb, rather intimate disco in the basement. Red backlighting at rear bar, laser lights and a good (not too loud) sound system make for good vibes and dancing all 'round.
No issues personally with bouncers but have not been late at the weekend.
Worth following the FB and Twitter feeds for up-to-date music and events. It's worth a trip to Dalston if you've not been. Easy access from the Dalston Junction overground station - transfer to overground from Victoria Line in Highbury & Islington or from the Jubilee line in Canada Water
Look Mum No Hands - London
49 Old Street, London EC1V 9HX

A cyclist's living room, or from a non-cyclist's perspective, a beehive great vibe spot with extras - competent mechanics who often fix minor issues on the spot, food and drinks throughout the day, good-sized tables from which to work, cycling events on the big screen evenings - it's tempting not to go home!
Customers are a mix of cycle messengers, freelance designers, people commuting to / from work by bike, workers from nearby firms.
Food ranges from a freshly-made porridge with honey and bananas before work, mixed salads and soups for lunch and hot dishes for dinner, not to mention special brews and home-made cakes in the evening.
Ample and secure bicycle parking out front and in the yard.
All complemented by an enthusiastic team who are constantly busy cooking, serving, cleaning up, tearing down and setting up tables for events.
Don't miss the message pillar with its prominent 'No frowning on Friday' sticker.
A word about the workshop - I've had minor adjustments and a major incident with a jammed chain - all fixed straight away and with no charge. It helps if you consider bringing you bike in for maintenance where you pay a fair price for labour and parts - perhaps not the cheapest but Sam and his team are highly experienced and can get you back in the saddle whilst you enjoy coffee, cakes, a drink or a meal. And the workshop hours are longer than many shops. If you need special order parts, the workshop is good about following through with orders and confirming bookings for longer jobs by email.

Fantastic spot for a coffee and cake - sheltered from wind - nice morning sun. Great place to have a chat with friendly strangers :)
New for 2011 season - expanded kitchen and improved ordering process for food, more tables and a picnic blanket section in nice weather.
Same ambience - just more friendly strangers - eventually they will be friends :)
d1v1d Chucking down rain this afternoon - stopped on way home with bike for a hot chocolate. Very nice around communal table with (un)touristy Americans and terrier that enjoyed posing for snaps.

The Hackney Pearl - London
11 Prince Edward Road, Hackney Wick, E9 5LX, London E9 5LX
22-03-2011
An island of tranquility in the midst of a rapidly-modernising Hackney Wick. Don't mind the building site out front; the cafe is open and serving food and atmosphere a plenty. It's the kind of place where you can take off your jumper if you're hot (as I was after a vigorous bike ride). The focus is on the food and friendly atmosphere rather than 'being scene [sic]'. Excellent bubble & squeak served up at the slightly tardy hour of 12:55 on a Sunday [morning]. That plus cafe late and organic juice for under a tenner - good value and relaxing chat at table without being pestered by staff. Definitely worth a return or even moving to the Wick to make this your local.
thehackneypearl Thanks d1v1d! And the building site will soon be gone- making way for our fantastic new front yard! Summer of weekend BBQs here we come!

TfL and its contractor, Serco, are keeping up with the surging demand for the 'Boris Bikes'. With a key which you sign up for on the TfL website, undocking a bike is easy - insert the key and wait for a green light. Just remember to lift the back of the bike up to undock. If you re-dock at another station within 30 min, there is no additional charge for your journey. My first ride was from Hoxton to Vauxhall and as I enjoyed the long wheelbase, wide tyres and smooth ride, my journey took a few minutes longer so I paid £1 extra for going 'overtime'. The docking stations are fairly well saturated within Zone 1 so it is a good service. Just be sure to check one of the status web sites or Android / iPhone apps to be sure a bike is available at the docking station you want to use or if there is space left to dock the bike once you're through.
Monica e Ahmed - Cagliari
Corso Vittorio Emanuele 119, Cagliari
04-09-2010
Excellent seafood in humble surroundings - no menu. Monica suggests antipasti and recommends customers decide what else they want to order when finished. We had eight (8) antipasti dishes - everything imagineable from the sea - Sardinian tapas - fantastic fish, octopus, mussels with carrots, celery, zucchini. Spaghetti with clams and saffron for next course - too full for secondi but had homemade petit fours and espresso to finish. All of this plus a bottle of prosecco for 65€. Good value and very friendly, relaxing service. Highly recommended!
Deep Blue Subs - Vauxhall
1 South Lambeth Road, Arch 54 next to Vauxhall Rail Station, London SW8 1SS

(updated on 26-08-2010)
The best submarine sandwiches and wraps in the UK! Bright blue and yellow sandwich shop adjacent to Vauxhall Station (east side of railway line). From the greeting at the door to the freshest bread, lean meats, fresh veg andcoffee, this shop is a bright star in the otherwise post-industrial traffic corridor around Vauxhall. Generous sub sandwiches are around a fiver and you can order a half sandwich with bread or a wrap. My fav is the Depth Charge wrap for £4.35. Comfie tables and chatty staff and customers. It's a bit of upper Market St, San Francisco dropped into a railway arch. Open very late on weekends and now offers breakfast.
d1v1d Pricing seems fair considering the subs and wraps are freshly made. You can spend as much or more in the Pret opposite the station or in Starbucks for a factory-produced filler.

deepbluesubs Hi Italiastar33, I'd ask that you please stop by and check out our menu again. We have half subs starting at £1.95 to 3.65 and our whole subs are between £2.95 and 4.85. Our half subs are priced competitively with the major chain and our whole subs are over a pound cheaper in most cases. When comparing us on price please compare apples to apples. For those who are not vegetarians, we put 55g of meat in our half subs & wraps and 110g of meat in our whole subs & salads. That is nearly 1/4 pound of cooked meat. I also challenge you to taste the difference in our sub sandwiches. We use top quality meat, veggies, and cheese. We have real rare roast beef, smoked turkey breast, and honey roast ham. We also have sourced some of the tastiest chicken breast I think you will find in a sandwich. We just recently launched 9" pizzas starting at £2.95 that seem to be a hit. We think you will not find better value for your money in London. I would be more than happy to meet with you to discuss any of your opinions. We have made many changes to our original menu which did not easily show the cost of our half sub from the beginning. We have added a meal deal which for an extra pound you get tasty crisps and a soft drink. Your comments are well appreciated, but come and give us a try before you say it is not priced right. With much thanks, Jim - Director at Deep Blue Subs Ltd.

High quality professional lab offering a full range of film-based and digital services. Same-day turnaround on black & white processing and three-hour turnaround on E6 and C-41 services. Pricing is higher than high-street shops but this is the place to come if you want the best quality. Superb hand printing from colour negatives. Have used scanning services in the past but they are quite expensive. See website for list of services.
East London Line - London
London E1 6SZ
27-04-2010
The East London Line is now open for passengers. Well worth the wait, the line combines the best of 19th and 21st century innovation. For travel south of Wapping, the line goes through the Brunel Tunnel, the world's first underwater tunnel. North of Whitechapel, the line is spanking new with fantastic views of Shoreditch and Hackney on the way to its northern terminus in Dalston. Spacious carriages - and you can walk between them if one is too full. Well worth the ride even if it's not on your regular commute!
