The Electric Elephant cafe-Gallery - Kennington

186a Crampton Street, Crampton Street, London SE17 3AE

02-02-2013

I'm lucky enough to have this cafe just a couple of streets away from my flat, and it's still one of central south London's best kept secrets.  If I want to impress a non-Southwark friend who imagines the Elephant as being vaguely on a par with Timbuktu or Kabul, this is where I take them for a civilised chat over coffee and cake.  Having said that, the whole atmosphere of this cafe is very informal, and that's part of its charm.

Louisa the proprietor is always most friendly and welcoming, and takes care to get to know her regulars.  I like the fact that I can head off to the Electric Elephant for lunch and never quite know what dish (or dishes) of the day she is going to surprise me with.  There are usually some interesting remnants of the weekend newspapers - or back issues of Private Eye - scattered around by way of reading material while I wait for my food (just one plea: please remember to bring the cup of tea to the table quickly, even if the food takes a while to prepare!).

In fine weather it's lovely being able to sit out in Iliffe Yard (the cobbled mews outdoor seating area), and the yard forms a remarkably peaceful oasis in the midst of the inner city.

Prices are generally very fair, and Louisa also operates a crafty loyalty card scheme...nine stamps for beverages bought and you get a free coffee!
