Great Japanese Cafe in South Ken, and perfect for escaping the tourist traps of the Le Pain Quotidien and Paul's nearby. Located on Thurloe Street, also home to the nice and cheap Kulu Kulu Sushi, Tombo is a Japanese cafe combined with a deli. Although deli is probably not the word for it - as it serves hot food like bento boxes, dons (rice bowls), and noodles.
I fully recommend the matcha latte - which is matcha powder mixed with frothed steamed milk. Absolutely amazing! Their sesame macaroon was perfect - crispy on the outside, fluffy and light middle, and filled with a sticky and not overly sweet sesame paste, which had bags of that burnt sesame flavour.
Do try to go for the £4.50 drink + cake offer during tea time (3pm to 5pm) as its superb value for money, especially in South Kensington!

Owned by an Indian, staffed by Eastern European girls, but who cares! This sandwich shop does sandwiches, pizzas, and pasta well and cheaply too. Probably the only place around the area where you can get a very filling takeaway lunch for less than a fiver.
It does get very crowded during lunchtime, with the queue stretching out onto the side pavement, but they are very efficient and you will get served very quickly.
Also, for those looking for even more of a bargain, after 4/5pm they sell all their leftover sandwiches at half price! But be sure to go quickly… as you’ll be competing against the hordes of students from the nearby Imperial College.

As a guy, I have to say that the place looks really girlish, and is a bit of a gimmick. A few quid for a cup of low fat yoghurty thing that has no taste!! Having said that, I can see the attraction of the place, and definitely maybe somewhere to bring a date for dessert as she won’t feel so guilty about putting on the pounds.
Plus i agree with the comments that it has a weird aftertaste. Even though I had the green tea one, it had this sourish medicinal taste after I was halfway through the cup. Interesting…

Good fresh sushi!! and generous portions too, with each nigri having a massive slice of fish that completely covers the rice underneath!! They also do amazing californian handrolls, and the prices are very reasonable. If only Kulu Kulu expanded all over London, they would drive Yo Sushi out of business!

Probably the cheapest value Chinese eat within a mile from South Ken station. The dining conditions are rather cramped, but for a fiver you can get a big plate of rice and roast meat, or a bowl of noodles.
Pretty good tasting and authentic Chinese and Malaysian food are served. Do not expect to be able to stay long and chat however; during busy periods the staff will try their best to shoo you away!

Absolutely agree with all the reviews (apart from the onion one!). You’re better off starving than parting with £4.95 for that crap. Dishes were full of onions, and pretty poor standard in any case. My friend found two long hairs in his food when we went for the first and only time.
Some of the food was edible, but the atmosphere, combined with the poor quality of the food, makes it a no-go. If you want buffet, there are some “decent” ones in Chinatown (e.g. Mr Wu) that charge a fiver and is alot better than this, although in my opinion those are still quite poor.

Personally, I love this place, although my friend who was with me at the time had an unlucky experience as she ordered the lamb with yoghurt expecting grilled lamb with some yoghurt sauce in the side. Instead, it was more like a lamb yoghurt stew, and I had to share some of my mixed grill with her! The menus are not very descriptive in terms of cooking style, and probably that means that non-Lebanese diners should stick to the basics or make sure they know what they’re ordering.
The portions are quite big for the main dishes (£12.95), and one might be enough to feed two people if you order one or two other side dishes. Service was polite, but not overly good. The interior of the restaurant looks a bit glitsy and swanky, but its good if you’re bringing a date on a budget!
Note: This is a branch of the famous chain of Maroush/Ranoush Lebanese restaurants from Edgware Road

There’s only one phrase to sum this place up: cheap conveyor belt sushi.
The place operates very much like Yo Sushi, where plates of sushi revolve on a conveyor belt and you just take whatever plates you want. The place is rather small, with maybe only about 10 seats by the conveyor belt and some tables at the back. However, the quality of the sushi is very high, and they don’t skimp on portions either, with big slices of raw fish.
Frankly, this place is much better than Yo Sushi in terms of sushi quality as well as price. For £20 each my dining partner and I managed to stuff ourselves full of sushi, whereas at Yo you end up feeling you could still eat more for that price.
The place doesn’t particularly have much aesthetic appeal, and the chefs may all be non-Japanese, but its a place I would go to again if I had a craving for sushi and on a budget.
