Planet Coffee - Hull
162 Newland Avenue, Hull HU5 2NE
05-03-2009
(updated on 04-03-2011)
The last time i went here i walked out without being served as the two people working there were talking about what an amazing (read: boring) night they had last night to each other. I was at the front of a short queue which got longer. I have been successfully served coffee here; it was expensive and rubbish. Why do i even go to these places?

UPDATED...
I wrote that review a while back, as it happens I went here again in 2011 - it was infinity better, the coffee was pretty decent the staff seemed to notice that they had customers, even though it was really busy everything seemed very organised. It wasn't a mind blowing experience or anything but as far as this kind of coffee shop type place goes it's pretty good, I'd go back there without scowling too much now.
planetcoffee10 Try it now, you will be surprised. Review us again....
Menu bigger and better and a new fully refurbed upstairs. No more beanbags!
We listened to all our customers points of views and then we try and adapt to everyone needs.
Hope to see you soon!

W M Jackson - Kirkbymoorside
37 West End, York, North Yorkshire YO62 6AD

I went to this dentist for many years and he was my childhood dentist, I went here because my family did.
Now it's fair to say I have a low opinion of this dentist. Sure as a young adult I didn't really excel at keeping to a check up routine, and I only really went when something went wrong, but after seeing other dentists it made me think something was really wrong here, it all felt very draconian.
Personally I found 'Mr. Jackson' to not be a very sympathetic dentist (he might be retired now as it has been probably 8 years since I last went).
There was maybe a gap of about 2 years between me going to this dentist and seeing another dentist, but it was like entering the distant future! The staff were nice and friendly, the dentist was interested in discussing things and offering 'options' and the equipment seemed like, well, from the future, as I said.
I'd never really had my options discussed at this dentist, just told what was going to be done. I'd also never actually felt like anyone actually cared if I was in pain here either, if anything other dentists have been overly concerned about this, which is sort of nice.
The best thing I ever did was leave this dentist (actually in the interest of fairness I was refused to be seen, for which I owe them a huge thanks).
Hop & Vine - Hull
24 Albion Street, Hull HU1 3TG
05-12-2010
I have been to Hop and Vine twice, and really it's OK, they have a decent selection of real/local beers and ciders and its well priced. It is very small, which I don't like, but some people will call it 'cosy' or quaint or whatever.
People will have you believe this is like a real old fashioned rural drinking pub in the heart of Hull, which paints a nice picture, but it's not exactly like that. It's not quite full of the pigeon fanciers and whippet CAMRA types you might expect.
Apparently it used to be like a cave inside, which would have been far more exciting.
Having said all that the staff are friendly and look the part. I've not had food here, but people say it's very good.
Pave - Hull
16-20 Princes Avenue, Hull HU5 3QA
04-03-2009
(updated on 05-12-2010)
Pave is your yard stick by which to measure the other places on Princes Avenue.
The food is good, but not as good as they might like to think, it also sways sometimes to be a bit pricey for what you get.
The beer is pretty good and they usually have a guest ale on which is normally quite acceptable. They have a massive range of lagers and beers to cater for everyone, from normal human beings to idiots who like fancy glasses and paying far to much for their drinks. Their wine selection is the usual middle of the road stuff, it's a very bland wine menu really, it isn't that expensive but it isn't that good either.
They are 'family friendly', which has pros and cons but as a general rule, it never seems too much like a kindergarten, but it can get close.
Like all places on Princes Ave. it sometimes suffers a bit from the bar staff having a 'better than you' attitude, they also spend a lot more time trying to look 'cool' and aloof than they do serving you, which is an attitude that appears to get worse every time I go there, which is infrequently.
They have some live music on which varies in quality, this is not necessarily dictated by if you have to pay to get in to see it either.
All in all if you happen to be stuck down Princes Ave. with people who have recently re-discovered themselves 'bohemian', or heard that Princes Ave. is the 'cosmopolitan' area of Hull; you are best off staying in Pave, it's the best of a bad bunch really, and they all seem to be getting worse.
Hotel Minerva - Hull
Public House Nelson Street, Hull HU1 1EX
25-09-2009
Unlike some people (Craig wtf?) I have actually been here since it re-opened, It is a fair enough place with a niceish view. There's not much variety in choice of beer though.
The staff are friendly but in no rush to serve you. It is decorated tastefully and modestly with boat related paraphernalia.
I'd certainly go back but I'm in no rush to go again.

We use these guys a bit for work, they are shockingly cheap, but the price does unfortunately reflect the quality, it is usually hit and miss, but to be honest they are so cheap it is worth the gamble, as sometimes you get some quality stuff from them, we’ve never been too dissapointed, as we know what to expect.
If you really need something high quality, you may be better of elsewhere though.
They only do digital printing if I recall correctly…
cos1fmc Hi,
I also have used these guys a lot as they are friends and they have got a lot better. They mentioned that your review on google maps with this Qype thing makes them look bad. Would you be willing to try them again in order to try and change your comments so they don’t look bad to potential customers. If they was still hit and miss then fair enough but they really have improved!
Kind regards
James

Stewart's Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum - Pocklington
Burnby Lane, York, North Yorkshire YO42 2QF
11-06-2009
Burnby Hall Gardens is really just what it says, there is a huge pond (well two really) and a lot of grass/trees and plants, it is great for a picnic or drinking fine wines…
It is not a bad place to go for a sunny afternoon out. The Clientèle tend to be reasonably respectable, which is nice, even though you always have some kids running at ducks and generally being annoying and ruining the otherwise peaceful environment.
There is an aviary which is, um, rather small.
There is a woefully overpriced cafe and a nice ice cream place too. They often have a brass band on which i tended to avoid, because the parks get busy with the kind of people who like brass band music.
There is also a small museum which is worth avoiding because it is very poor - unless you like to see dead creatures stuffed and mounted, and said killer of these creatures (Major Percy Stewart himself!) glorified, when in fact he must have been a vile a human to kill them. He was basically a toffy big game hunter who killed animal for fun when he grew tired of the daily humdrum of being wealthy.
So to conclude the gardens are nice, the ponds and fish are nice the cafe is expensive the bands are hit and miss and the museum is terrible.
Tiger Inn - York
29 The Village, Haxby, York, North Yorkshire YO32 3HS
27-05-2009
By far the better of the pubs in Haxby, when i lived there this was certainly our local. The beer is reasonably priced (it is Sam Smiths after all)
At the front is the kind of place you might take your parents for a meal but round the back is where the drinking is done. There was always seating and the locals are friendly.
Even though Haxby is swallowed up by York now The Tiger still maintaines a small village pub feel to it.
The Zoo - Hull
80b Newland Avenue, Hull HU5 3AB
12-11-2008
(updated on 27-05-2009)
Zoo is an great place to eat or drink, the staff are very friendly and the food and drink is always good and reasonably priced, best of all it is all vegetarian or vegan.
Pearson Park - Hull
Princes Avenue, Hull HU5 2UH
11-05-2009
You know what I love in the morning? Seeing broken bottles on concrete and non-broken bottles floating in water and litter, so lucky me I get to see Pearson park everyday; it is full of this joy.
It is a shame really as it is a nice park, but as you would expect from Hull City Council their idea of upkeep is pretty poor. The parkies seem friendly enough but it is an uphill struggle for them and there is nothing they can do at night (sure there is a police station in the park, like that counts for something, right?)
It probably would not kill the city council to put lighting in there but some manager probably won’t be able to afford his platinum stapler or they would not be able to do some other completely pointless decadent nonsense (mayors parade…)
If I had children I would probably not let them near the play area there for fear of them falling on a syringe or broken glass.
