castello coffee - Edinburgh

7a castle street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 3AH

13-12-2012

friendly service, lunch options of soups, sandwiches, baguettes, snacks and great coffee.

castello use the fabulous allpress espresso, a new zealand outfit that also trades out of london and sydney. they buy direct from small estates and co-ops so the actual beans change regularly and are seasonal. castello's baristas will always give you a lovely coffee, and you get variety - perfect.

it's also excellently placed to grab a coffee and picnic and then pop across the road to the princes street gardens under the looming edinburgh castle.

Leo's Beanery - Edinburgh

23a Howe Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 6TF

slap bang in the middle of yummy mummy new town, this is a lovely spot. the flat white has great flavour, nice and strong without bitterness, choclatey, nuttyish and with a warming burnt sugar aroma – like you get on the top of a creme brulee. leo’s is doing it all right and has been going from strength to strength on the coffee front. gets a ‘cracking’ rating from edinburgh coffee lovers

freemans - Edinburgh

it feels like a big space with lots of height and a very relaxed vibe with a mix of sofas to lounge in or tables to sit up to. they seem like a creative bunch with thoughtful takes of salads, soups, cakey-things, tray bakes, breakfasts and great looking bread. you order and pay with the friendly folk at the counter and then they bring your goodies to you. the coffee was great. the flat white was full and round with a slightly choclatey smokiness. great milk texture and temperature. their blackboard states they’re ‘the only supplier of monmouth coffee in edinburgh’. (a quick google search reveals they’re a london-based outfit who’ve been kicking around since 1978 – very much encouraged to try on our next visit) http://edinburghcoffeelovers.blogspot.com twitter: @edinburghcoffee

Cafe Montagu - Edinburgh

12 Montagu Terrace, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 5QX

the very friendly folk at montagu’s are keen on their coffee. we tried a flat white and cappuccino. sadly the flat white was only a single shot and so a bit on the bland side although the milk was good. capuccino was enjoyed by trusty partner. rather than struggle on i asked for a double shot flat white (happily exchanged) instead and it was lovely. apparently the locals don’t like it strong. ask for a double shot and you’ll get a cracker. (they also do tea pig tea, yum) http://edinburghcoffeelovers.blogspot.co.uk/

ronde - Edinburgh

66, Hamilton Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH35AZ

ronde is mostly a funky bicycle shop with slick, smart and intelligently designed bicycles and bicycle gear. but it’s also a cafe and art gallery. you can take a seat at one of handful of cute vintage 50s-ish tables and have coffee and sweet, cake type things. the coffee is well made by friendly people. soft milk, not too hot, rounded flavour. trusty partner very much enjoyed the espresso. my flat white was a wee bit weak but we’ll be back. http://edinburghcoffeelovers.blogspot.co.uk/

bonningtons eaterie - Edinburgh

75 clerk street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH10 7

we tried the flat white (coffee). milk temperature was good, on the cool side. strength and flavour was good but no real milk texture that would have lifted it. a good option though if you’re in the area, especially if you’re hungry. http://edinburghcoffeelovers.blogspot.co.uk

razzo coffee - Edinburgh

st andrew square, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 2AD

13-02-2012

it’s a wee place with a couple of tables inside and benches to sit up to around the edge looking out. on dry days, there are plenty of tables outside at which to sit and watch the world go by. you order at the counter with the friendly staff. the coffee is excellent. http://edinburghcoffeelovers.blogspot.com @edinburghcoffee

papii - Edinburgh

101 hanover street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH10 7

29-01-2012

papii has a welcoming crisp white frontage and almost summery feel inside with friendly, welcoming staff. they’re kid friendly with baby changing facilities in the loo. they’ve a variety of wholesome looking food to choose from. the pasta and potato bakes looked particularly good but smoothies, breakfast, soups and cakes were also available. papii use artisan roast coffee. we had a double shot flat white and cappuccino (single shot). The milk was a wee bit hot and milk texture a bit thin but the flavour was fulsome and rounded, thanks to using great quality coffee. http://edinburghcoffeelovers.blogspot.com twitter: @edinburghcoffee

The Chocolate Tree - Edinburgh

123 Bruntsfield Place, Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, Scotland EH10 4EQ

29-01-2012

on the chocolate front, you can get dark, milk and white chocolate with all manner of additives such as pepper, cranberry, almonds, chilli and much, much more. they’ve got blocks of all flavours plus the fancy looking truffle type chocs. very nice indeed. the coffee also was very nice! cracking in fact. i tried a strong and tasty flat white that was complex without bitterness. good milk temperature and nice milk texture. will definitely be back http://edinburghcoffeelovers.blogspot.com/ twitter: @edinburghcoffee

eteaket - Edinburgh

41 Frederick Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 1EP

29-01-2012

while eteaket’s main gig is their teas, their friendly staff also serve artisan roast coffee so we thought we should try it. i had a flat white (the regular size) but it was still too big to drink it all. fortunately the strength and flavour were still great, just a bit too much of a good thing. it was strong and edgy without being bitter. layers of savoury nuttiness came through well, finishing with a very slight burnt caramel flavour like on the top of creme brulee. the temperature was great and the milk texture soft and rich. http://edinburghcoffeelovers.blogspot.com/ twitter: @edinburghcoffee
