Buffet Shop - Helensburgh

30 Colquhoun Square, Helensburgh, Scotland G84 8AQ

06-03-2010

I used to love visiting here for lunch. It is a deli with a table service cafe at the back. The Scottish / Mediterranean food is wonderful, although pretty pricey (over £20 for 2 people to have a one course lunch, coffee and share a slice of cake). Although I am prepared to pay a premium for good food, I am not prepared to be asked in front of arriving new customers whether I would be prepared to share my small table with them. I couldn't believe the staff would put me in such an awkward position. Be warned, this is not a large cafe and you will be expected to share when tables run out. Also, customers waiting for a table tend to stand beside the cafe watching the other diners while waiting for a vacant table, which isn't very relaxing for those trying to enjoy a relaxing lunch or coffee. It's a pity as this ruins an otherwise wonderful cafe.

Rheinturm Gaststätten GmbH - Hafen

Stromstr. 20, 40221 Düsseldorf

22-08-2008

The only good point about the Rheinturm Top 180 restaurant really - and, admittedly, it is very good - is the view. Wow! And that’s what you’re paying for, let’s be honest. The Rheinturm Top 180 restaurant is a very different place depending on what time of day one chooses to visit. Whatever time one chooses to go, however, it still costs approx 3 Euros each to travel in the lift, irrespective of whether or not one has a restaurant reservation, which is a bit irritating. In the afternoons it’s a very nice café serving light snacks and drinks. We enjoyed an apfelstrudel, beer and heiße Schokolade in a very comfortable and private booth before we were unceremoniously kicked out at 5 p.m. - which is when the café metamorphoses into a pricey upmarket restaurant. We decided to return on a subsequent evening for dinner. This was extremely disappointing. The view at sunset and with the city illuminated after dark was a fantastic sight, but my enjoyment was spoiled by the ludicrously over-priced and very disappointing food. My cocktail tasted like cough medicine, my duckling (chosen due to the very limited menu) was rubbery and inedible and accompanied by horrible bitter vegetables and my coffee was like dishwater. My husband, however, had beef and seemed to enjoy it. This meal cost us 75 Euros and we didn’t even have starters or desserts. My advice: go in the afternoon or just have a drink in the evening. Dinner might turn out to be a very expensive mistake.

Tam Nag Thai - Downtown East

Hohe Str. 13, 44139 Dortmund

22-08-2008

I must agree with everything Ken2305 wrote about Tam Nag Thai. What a fantastic experience! From the sumptuous décor to the ceremony of removing one’s shoes and climbing into one’s seat (I had never encountered this custom before), to the exquisite food…wow! Definitely the best Thai food I’ve ever eaten - and it doesn’t have to break the bank. Two beers and two (very filling) main courses with rice cost us 33 Euros in total. The extensive menu includes an English translation, which is always welcome, and each dish has a chili rating so you know what to expect. Highly recommended. P.S. Thanks, Ken!

rigoletto - Downtown East

kleppingstr. 9-11, mitten in der innenstadt, 44135 Dortmund

22-08-2008

We spent an enjoyable evening at Rigoletto in Dortmund in August 2008. I’m not sure I would classify it under Pubs & Bars. It’s much nicer than that. The conservatory area opposite Europa Fountain is lovely - although, unfortunately, the smokers tended to use the door beside our table to nip outside for a quick puff - still, at least they have to go outside now, which is an enormous improvement. The menu includes an English translation, which is always welcome, and the staff were lovely. Prices are very reasonable and the food is good. My husband was in raptures about his Bistecche di tacchino Putensteaks mit Schinkenragout überbacken, dazu Gratinkartoffeln und Ruccola (see photo) although I was less taken with my Pasta di patate al forno Kartoffelnudeln mit Oliven, Sardellen, Parmaschinken und zweierlei Käse überbacken. It’s not the ideal menu for those of us who basically only eat chicken!

Sila Thai - Stadtmitte

Bahnstraße 76, 40210 Düsseldorf

22-08-2008

What a wonderful evening we spent at Sila Thai! Exquisite décor, attentive staff, extensive menu, delicious food beautifully presented…We were treated like royalty and the food was fit for a king - and a lot less expensive than other places we ate in Düsseldorf. Highly recommended.

KIKAKU Restaurant - Altstadt

Klosterstr. 38, 40211 Düsseldorf

22-08-2008

We turned up at Kikaku early on a Friday evening (possibly a mistake) having read the wonderful reviews on Qype. I would have thought that when two people walk into a restaurant on a Friday evening they are obviously there hoping to have a meal..however, it didn’t seem obvious to the staff. They didn’t speak English, we don’t speak German or Japanese, and it was just awful. Apparently, two people don’t qualify for an actual table and they gestured vaguely towards the counter, the best seats at which had reserved signs on them. We did not feel welcome. In fact we felt very uncomfortable. So we left and went to Edo. The food may be fantastic at Kikaku for all I know but customers will not stay to find out if they are not made to feel welcome. Very disappointing.
