Fox & Hounds - Syston

2 High Street, Leicester, Leicestershire LE7 1GP

13-12-2008

This is a lovely bar that has just been refurbished, it looks great and very neutral, nice cream walls, wooden fittings and nice seats. It also has a couple of nice booths which give you a bit of privacy if there are a group of you.
The staff are very friendly and service is quick. On Friday and Saturday nights the place is usually quite crowded which makes for a great atmosphere, it is quieter throughout the week and a quieter atmosphere, still a good place to go for a couple of drinks. I have also heard very good reports of the food here but have yet to try it for myself (something I plan on doing in the near future!)

spencers - Birstall

109 Sibson Road, Leicester, Leicestershire LE4 4NB

Having heard many bad things about estate agents in general, and some bad reports of Spencers in particular (I later found out this was about the Leicester based branch) I was very much on my guard and prepared for the worst when we decided we liked a house on sale through Spencers.
I was very pleasantly surprised. The staff were all very pleasant and professional, as first time buyers we felt a bit clueless but they were happy to explain everything to us in a way that made sense.
When we put in our offer it took a while for the sellers to get back to us. I was prepared not to hear anything for perhaps a few days, but they had the courtesy to give us a call and explain that they were still waiting for an answer but they would get back to us as soon as possible, this was much nicer than being left waiting with no explanation.
From a buyers perspective I would highly recommend Spencers as they seemed very fair and professional in all our dealings with them.

Glastonbudget - Leicester

Turnpost Farm, Wymeswold, Leicester, Leicestershire LE12 6ST

Advertised (on their website) as Europe’s biggest tribute and new acts festival, this is the best festival I have ever been too.
Don’t be put off by the tribute side of it, I know you can get some pretty bad tributes but at Glastonbudget they make an effort to get the best. I have to admit that I enjoyed watching the Dead hot chillis more than I enjoyed the real act (at Earls court) - they have so much energy, and you actually have a chance to get to the front of the audience.

The new acts are also great, they get some great new acts and it is fab to have a chance to see so many!

Value for money is fantastic - ticket prices at the moment are just less than £50 for the whole weekend including camping. Another thing the festival prides itself on is keeping food and drink prices reasonable, so prices are similar to those in a pub.
They serve a selection of real ales and ciders which were very popular with the lads in our group.

The only complaint I have is about the weather - it rained badly on the Sunday 2 years ago!! They did improve things a lot last year by adding two music tents, one in the camp field and one in the main arena, the rain wasn’t too bad but at least they were prepared if it had been.

This event is getting bigger year after year, I would highly recommend it (and have been to all my friends!!)

Gables Guesthouse - Horley

After doing plenty of research into Gatwick hotels and parking I fortunately stumbled accross the Gables Guesthouse.

They provide comfortable, basic accomodation near to Gatwick, plus will drive you to the airport in the morning. They also provide airport parking for around £4 per night.

We stayed here for an early morning departure and left at around 5.30 am. They do a breakfast buffet from a more civilised time around 7am but as we were leaving before that they gave us a basket of breakfast containing croissants and jam, plus there were tea and coffee making facilities in the room.

The rooms are quite old fashioned but clean and the staff were very nice. If you are leaving for the airport later in the day (I think after 10am) you have to make your own way there, plus we had to get back by ourselves.

Cost us around £74 for the night and a weeks parking so worked out at fantastic value compared to the cheapest airport hotels. I would definitely stay here for an early morning departure again.

Victoria Centre - Nottingham

Victoria Centre, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 3QE

This is a great place to come shopping, particularly if it is raining! There are plenty of different shops including John Lewis, Tesco, WH Smith and Boots.

Until recently I hadn’t realised there is an indoor market on the top floor opposite to John Lewis. The market is great for finding things, I went in search of sewing accessories and it was easy to find what I needed.

The shopping centre is well lit and the staff at the information desk are very helpful. There is parking at the centre, although parking in the centre of Nottingham is not cheap it is convenient for the Victoria centre.

There are also plenty of places to grab something ot eat or drink.

Overall I love the variety in the Victoria centre, plus the fact that almost everything you need is right there in one place!!

Hobby Horse - Syston

Glebe Way, Leicester, Leicestershire LE7 1BA

This is probably one of the easiest pubs to find, you literally drive past it on the A46 between Leicester and Nottingham.

This is a big pub with plenty of space to sit around. There is plenty of parking, but beware if you want to leave your car overnight let them know - they have been known to issue parking tickets!!

The food is okay, good value for money and substantial portions. The staff are good and fairly efficient at serving.

The only thing I don’t really like about this place is the size. It feels fairly impersonal and is not a great place for enjoying an evening with friends.

Ship Inn - Blaxhall

Woodbridge, Suffolk IP12 2DY

20-11-2008

Given that there is only one pub in Blaxhall, when we stayed here we were lucky it was as nice and popular as the Ship. The place was very friendly but does get very packed, if you want to eat here I would recommend booking early.

The food is really good. They serve food sourced locally such as the sausages (I can’t remember the name of them but they came from a local butchers) and everything was really well cooked and tasty.

The atmosphere was great, although the place was packed they managed to squeeze the two of us in for something to eat. The staff were really nice. We ended up sitting around chatting with them until late in the evening.

English Heritage: Landguard Fort - Felixstowe

A154, Felixstowe, Suffolk IP11 3TW

20-11-2008

There is plenty to see and do at Languard fort. The whole place is open to visitors (if I remember correctly) and you can look out over the sea from the high walls, you can climb to the top of the high walls. There are dedicated rooms where you can learn about the communications that were used back when the fort was in use.

There are also guns, cannons and tin hats that no one seems to mind you touching and playing with. The fort itself is a really impressive building, and the history behind it is fascinating - it is probably worthwhile bringing children here to explore but adults will also enjoy it!
