The Electric Circus - Edinburgh
36 - 39 Market Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1DF
01-07-2009
(updated on 16-02-2010)
What a diamond of a venue!!
The Electric Circus has taken over the club formally known as Massa on Market Street (behind Waverley Station) and have injected the air of a Chic city night spot reminiscent of Madame Jo Jos in London or the East Side in Berlin, in short the venue is truly sublime, but shuns the formality or stuffy attitudes of other establishments.
The layout is perfect for catching some live performance, as the well placed booths and seating areas are perfectly raised and positioned for optimum stage viewing and the line up of performance focussed live music and variety nights are perfectly chosen.
I recommend for early evening gigs & late night dancing without the formality, expense (or general tackiness) of George Street!!
And the Karaoke rooms, inspired!

WHISKI - Edinburgh
119 High Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1SG
16-02-2010
Whiski is divine and hosts one of the best Scottish beer selections in the city, the restaurant food is also rather delightful!
The decor is very warm and manages to stay the right side of kitsch, and a plus point for all you visitors with children, it's on the Royal Mile & has high chairs.
Try the mash!

The Mosque Kitchen - Edinburgh
50 Potterrow, Southside, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9BT

The Mosque kitchen is quite a treat - a very cheap and extremely cheerful buffet style middle eastern food haunt right in the student central of West Nicholson Street.
Well worth a visit for some quality nosh at pocket friendly prices!
Luna - Edinburgh
14 Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 3JT

(updated on 13-07-2009)
The club formally known as Ego relaunched itself as Luna in 2008.
With a new decor (gone are the homoerotic freezes of old :-( ) and club line up a new era was to dawn, but some problems, gone is the regular busy Vegas! night from the schedules & along comes a new weekend clientele stomping and guffawing to a sporadic events calendar and a seemingly desperate attempt to cash in on the 'burlesque boom’ with corporate burlesque christmas packages throughout December, which featured poor performers & uninspired menus, loosing this new venue much credibility in the club scene.
I will keep a close eye on developments here as it’s early days!

A little update, this venue appears to have closed down, no-one knows why nor when / if it will reopen.
King Tuts Wah Wah Hut - Glasgow
272A St. Vincent Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 5RL
13-07-2009
Probably Scotland’s best known small(er) gig venue - King Tuts is a genuine institution and whilst, in the eyes of many, it has lost its edge with mainstream acceptance, it still is a right of passage to local and touring bands alike.
I HUGE recommendation to any one visiting Tut’s for a gig for the first time is to get there super early, especially if its sold out (which they often are). There is a near nil stage view opportunity to anyone forced to hang to the right hand side of the stage.

glasgow abc - Glasgow
300 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 3JA
13-07-2009
The ABC is a new(ish) addition to Glasgow’s mid-sized venue roster nustling up alongside the Glasgow Academy, the Barrowlands and The Old Fruitmarket.
The venue has been restored with live music in mind and the staging and sound facilities are as perfect as can be. It is very similar in layout to many of the aforementioned venues and it fits in its place perfectly and seems to be ensuring that more of this size of gig/event now happen in Glasgow.
There appear to be a list of interesting (on the surface) club nights also at the venue, I may just pop along to check those out - though the fear of being on Sauchiehall Street late at night may stop that in its tracks.
Keep an eye on the gig listings here, thats for sure!!

Renfrew Ferry - Glasgow
Anderson Quay Broomielaw, Glasgow, Scotland G3 8DL
13-07-2009
I love the Renfrew Ferry, one of the most unique night spots in Glasgow!!
The super popular and long running, Vegas nights, I believe have moved on to pastures new - for good, hosting very large scale events, most recently at the Old Fruitmarket (and a ruddy splendid evening it was).
I will watch with interest at the new nights that crop up here to take its place!!!
Finnegan's Wake - Edinburgh
9b Victoria Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2HE

Sadly another victim of the Vicoria Street Blaze, shut for the forseeable future (July '09).

Club Massa - Edinburgh
36 Market Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1DF
01-07-2009
Massa has been updated, upgraded renames (The Electric Circus) brought screaming into Edinburgh's live performance venue roster - a much needed and perfectly poised addition!! See the new entry here: http://www.qype.co.uk/place/665813-The-Electric-Circus-Ed...
Go and enjoy!
