Gaucho Charlotte Street - Fitzrovia

60A Charlotte Street, London W1T 2NU

02-01-2012

Love this gaucho.
Classic decor, delicious cocktails (with a cocky bartender, no less! He’s allowed. He knows his stuff!), amazing meat, and excellent service.

All you want from a Gaucho, with a tube station (Goodge street) nearby to boot!

Da vinci - Athens

Αγίου Ιωάννου 23, 15342 Athinai

€4 for a cappuccino…
A rude parking attendant (but hey, they’ve got valet!)…
And insufficient staff…

Happily, they have beautiful high ceilings, complete with velvet draperies, gold paint, fake marble, versailles-esque mirrors… they’re just missing the smoke! No wait. This is Greece. Plenty of smoke. Yes, with mirrors. I said that.

All this to say that the place is a bit naff… But it has the benefit of valet (if you ignore the fact that he’s a git) and (aha!) is of a particularly sunny disposition given its orientation and the lack of anything high enough blocking the light of the post midday sun.

It’s my new favourite spot for an afternoon coffee in the sun and making like a kitten.

Apollo Cinema - St. James's

19 Regent Street, London SW1Y 4LR

14-12-2011

LOVE the Apollo!

Prices are reasonable, bordering on cheap given the proximity to Leicester square (£7.50!!) and the seats are staggered vertically so you’re guaranteed to not have anyone in front of you!

Also, they’re incredibly comfy :)

The cinemas aren’t incredibly large, but the projection equipment is good, screen is good, seats are brilliant, and they even have – oh no!! there goes my waistline! – popcorn!

Beat that!

Zuma Restaurant - Knightsbridge

5 Raphael Street, South Kensington, London SW7 1DL

14-12-2011

After a bit of a random disorganised day, two friends and I hung our heads as Harrod’s closed in front of us, withdrawing all hopes of a hot chocolate on a cold winter afternoon.

Stocking up on some emergency supplies (caramelised popcorn for one, sausage roll for another) which we devoured, I brought up none other than the qype app on my iPhone (possibly one of the best things about the iToy!), to look for some emergency sustenance and prepare the foundations of “plan B”, since “plan A” (hot chocolate at Harrod’s) had failed miserably.

In the “nearby” listings, something crept up to the top. It had 5 stars. Out of 5. This was the average from 35 reviews. I figured “Hey, this has got to be good!” And proposed it to the boys. A few seconds of umms and errs quickly morphed to us all walking over round the small lancelot street to get to raphael street where Zuma hides. As we turned the corner, it looked like we might have gotten lost in an alley. Then we got to the doorway.

Golden light streaked out, warming the stone that lined the walls. We walked into the warmth, spotting the beautiful hostesses who were welcoming despite our lack of reservation. We could be seated at 20:00, she said. It was 18:30. I turned to my friends and explained (in french) we’d have to wait for an hour and a half. We all shrugged. And raised eyebrows when the hostess continued our conversation in fluent French. A nice touch.

We spent a very happy hour and a half at the rather crowded bar, where we watched lovely waiters handle bottles in ways you didn’t think bottles could be handled, pouring double or triple beers one-handed, and generally shaking and stirring things up like nobody’s business. I had a kiwi bellini. I think. Not that it matters. It was delicious, layered in flavours, and generally to be had again, and again, and again. Well, maybe one again short of that, given the £12 price tag…

At 20:00 sharp (I was very impressed with the timeliness) we were seated. Mesmerised by the sushi masters, it took us a while before we opened the menus and drooled over the contents. Ordering was quick and painless, the food arriving incredibly quickly.

We shared all dishes, being mediterranean. And frankly it’s the style of the place. Every single one of them was SO delicious! A complete symphony. The sweet, the tangy, the spicy, the crunchy, the smooth… melt-in-your-mouth salmon teriyaki, crunchy spicy fresh and perfect calamari. So perfect, in fact, we ordered another later on… and when the kitchen somehow lost track and made a third, our waiter brought it to us, laughing, saying he was sure we’d appreciate it more than anyone else. We did. We SO did!

At the end, you had to roll us out from the food we ate. And we had wine. Given our bill came in at under £100 for each of us, with the wine, and we were quite stuffed with the most delicious food we had every had (well, the best seafood, that’s for sure), we thought it was an absolute bargain!

We’d all go again at the drop of a hat, should anyone find a good enough excuse. Or a poor one. Any excuse, really. I just want to have my eyes roll back and my mouth be stunned at the delicious melting softness of that salmon teriyaki.

Truly. You have GOT to eat there. Even if all you can afford is one dish. It’ll be the best thing you ever had. I promise.

Kettners - Soho

29 Romilly Street, London W1D 5AJ

21-09-2011

Had dinner there in August 2011.

Adored it. The setting was brilliant, and the live piano absolutely lovely.

To top it off? Delicious food, and even better desserts.

A place I would definitely revisit. Come to think of it, I need somewhere to dine tonight around Soho… Hmmm…. :)

The Make Lounge - Islington

49-51 Barnsbury Street, London N1 1TP

21-09-2011

I’ve been to the make lounge 3 times.
First time was brilliant, the second absolutely terrible (but rather the fault of one particular attendee) and the third just fine.

Personally, I tend to be a bit quick on the crafting front, and would love some more advanced things that I could do while I wait for others to finish. Those seldom exist at the Make Lounge, I suppose so as not to intimidate people.

Their courses are very nice and simple, designed to appeal to a large public with a small bug for crafting. Anyone beyond “beginner” may find the topics boring (and over-priced). However, if it’s people you’re going for, then it’s a different story all together. Also, I would definitely recommend it if you truly are a beginner, as they explain absolutely everything from scratch, making no assumptions about what you may or may not know. Great work on that!!

Socialising while crafting is often a challenge (as you stick your tongue out and try to get that glue-line / stitch / cut perfectly straight, talking doesn’t come easily) but at the Make Lounge, it is encouraged.

Chez Manny - Clapham

An absolutely delicious surprise. From starters to dessert, the food was delicious.
It’s definitely worth the walk from clapham junction. And it’s a good walk.

The Witchery - Edinburgh

Castlehill, Royal Mile, Old Town, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1PD

05-06-2011

Not impressed...
The building is beautiful, and the staff very nice and dressed... appropriately, with long aprons, bow ties and the like.
Their wine list reads like a belgian bars beer catalogue, reaching for 1cm of thickness.
Sadly, they seem to lack a chef. The food was fairly prepared, but there was no richness of flavours, nothing going on in my palate... I've had a very similar venison burger in a pub. And at least there, it fit in the bun!
Not a bad experience at all, but know you are going for the quaint atmosphere, the candles, the decor, and the wines. Not so much the food....

The Outsider Restaurant - Edinburgh

15 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1EE

05-06-2011

We had dinner at the outsider on a bit of a whim, not having been able to book any other nice restaurants on our only dinner night in edinburgh. We'd booked for 20:00, but showed up at 19:00 and they had a table for us. A lovely one, in the back, with a view of the castle. The menu is simple, and everything looks delicious. Every single dish i saw coming out of the kitchen, I wanted to taste. Everything we had tasted amazing. For the first time in my life, I left the potato skins on as I ate the hand-cut chips. The whipped cream that came with the chocolate cake was made with molasses. For the first time ever, I did not ignore the cream. I ate it. It, too, was delicious.

With a flagon of wine one entree to share, a main dish for each and a dessert to share, our bill came to about £60 for the both of us. Given how delicious the food was, we were ready to pay more.

The next day, as we chatted with our host back at the house we rented a room at for the night, we discovered that he and his staff all strongly recommended the outsider, and that another couple staying there had also dined there the night before, as happily as us.

I'm already looking forward to going back to the outsider for dinner. And I live a five-hour train ride away. Yes, it's that good.

La Terrasse du 7eme - Eiffel Tower

2 Place Ecole Militaire, 75007 Paris

22-05-2011

Delicious pâté to start, absolutely horrible steak. Rough, full of knots, gave up from my jaw aching from trying to chew it. Frites were somehow pre-made, too. Well below what one would expect from a Parisian restaurant, and indeed much worse than what we found at a neighbourhood bistro near Montparnasse.
Dessert was decent, but not much more. Disappointed as their Mille feuilles seemed to be a speciality of the house, only made on Sundays.
Almost seems like they don't deserve the 2 stars, but the bread and pâté really were good and saved it...
