Not impressed...
The building is beautiful, and the staff very nice and dressed... appropriately, with long aprons, bow ties and the like.
Their wine list reads like a belgian bars beer catalogue, reaching for 1cm of thickness.
Sadly, they seem to lack a chef. The food was fairly prepared, but there was no richness of flavours, nothing going on in my palate... I've had a very similar venison burger in a pub. And at least there, it fit in the bun!
Not a bad experience at all, but know you are going for the quaint atmosphere, the candles, the decor, and the wines. Not so much the food....Posted to: eurydice13.livejournal.com

We had dinner at the outsider on a bit of a whim, not having been able to book any other nice restaurants on our only dinner night in edinburgh. We'd booked for 20:00, but showed up at 19:00 and they had a table for us. A lovely one, in the back, with a view of the castle. The menu is simple, and everything looks delicious. Every single dish i saw coming out of the kitchen, I wanted to taste. Everything we had tasted amazing. For the first time in my life, I left the potato skins on as I ate the hand-cut chips. The whipped cream that came with the chocolate cake was made with molasses. For the first time ever, I did not ignore the cream. I ate it. It, too, was delicious.
With a flagon of wine one entree to share, a main dish for each and a dessert to share, our bill came to about £60 for the both of us. Given how delicious the food was, we were ready to pay more.
The next day, as we chatted with our host back at the house we rented a room at for the night, we discovered that he and his staff all strongly recommended the outsider, and that another couple staying there had also dined there the night before, as happily as us.
I'm already looking forward to going back to the outsider for dinner. And I live a five-hour train ride away. Yes, it's that good.

Great service, and delicious food!
I had the croissant with ham & cheese, which, to my surprise, came served in a full dish with salad on the side, like a regular lunch course. For dessert I tried their chocolatiest treat: Chocolate ganache cake. Delicious and SO chocolatey!! My boyfriend had the waffle with nutella and I have to admit I stole about half of it. delicious waffle!!!
At the end, I went upstairs for the bathroom, and saw that the best seats are actually on the top floor! With a bird’s eye view on the Royal mile, you can people watch from just about any comfy seat (it’s armchairs-only upstairs!!) thanks to well-placed mirrors. Lovely!!

This came recommended from a tiny popup-map guidebook we picked up, and it didn’t disappoint… mostly.
The starters were very good, but I was astounded to see that “queen scallops” are about the size of my smaller fingernails (and i’m a girl!!!). The mussels were good too, but they didn’t leave enough of the cooking juice in as the Belgians do and that was a shame.
Generally food was good. The only real disappointment was that for the whole evening, and indeed the next day too, our clothes smelled so horribly of fish that it was nearly unbearable!!

We stayed at the Glenora Guest House for 3 days and overall the experience was positive.
Positive Points
- Clean rooms which were big enough (in one case, just big enough)
- Bed was comfortable
- Newly renovated bathroom were nice
- Cooked breakfast was good (no choices in content, unappetising alternatives).Negative Points
- On the first two nights, we were in a room on the first floor facing the street. Which means that the room was quite noisy in the morning. Even more so since there was a deviation in the road nearby which means that ALL cars and buses in the neighbourhood were passing right outside our window, and making it rattle. (We were moved to a rear facing room for the last night which was nice and quiet).
- The walls are very thin, meaning you can hear the next room quite distinctively. You can hear people talking. I’d hate to think if they quarreled or did other things. Again not helping in the quiet departement. Overall the hotel needs more sound insulation.
- The shower head, in what looked like a newly refurbished bathroom, didn’t stay up correctly and made having a shower impossible. In the end we used a face towel to tie it to the post to be able to have a normal shower. The bonus? It’s right next to haymarket station, and so many buses head that way from various places around the city. Easy to get back to at the end of the day!

I was flabbergasted to see that many bus operators can work in the same city at the same time, from the same bus stops, doing similar routes!!
First costs the same as Lothian, but didn’t seem to be on time, go where we needed it to go, or even run at all at the time we needed to take it!! (8pm towards a main train station!!)
All in all seriously bad service. I’d recommend avoiding these buses, to better enjoy your visit.
